A verily recent thread came up about Deus Ex and how it was supposedly the best game ever (http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29010578/12-years-later-deus-ex--still-the-best-game-ever). What with all these talks about how the game was great for its time and how it still is amazing to this day, this was not to be the case for other System Warrirors and some argued how time was working against the aged old classic of 2000.

It got me thinking, what game do you feel after all these years, has stood the test of time? As in, what game was amazing back then that if you played it right now, today, at this very moment, it would have the exact same impact that it made on you some time ago. Try and keep it in the previous gen rather than a game from this gen as this gen may have amzing games the time hasn't exactly been unkind yet so let's wait on those games and focus on the games that have had time become an enemy and see which one had prevaild.

So, what game has held up against the test of time? Well System Wars, what are your thoughts? :|

If you're just talking last gen and no other gens before it, then I would say Ico. The atmosphere, design, and gameplay are still awesome. I suspect many will probably pick games like Ico imo. Games with great artistic design(as opposed to technical graphics), a good storyline, and solid gameplay.

Great great game.

Cool thread.

Something I argue all the time is that the quality of a game, as in purely how fun it is to play, doesnt really change over time. This point is dismissed alot, because of the way review systems work, that being a 9 score years ago isnt the same as a 9 score now. I stand by this though, a game that is truely great fun to play will still be so in 10 years, 20 years from now. Good gaming is timeless, its only what we expect from things that changes our opinion over time.

On topic a little more, I would say the metal gear games have aged well. The basic premise of the way the game plays is still as great as it was upon release. The graphics etc are garbage by todays standards, but the quality of the actual gameplay isnt any less great than it was at the time.

I would also say most platformers, Mario being first among them, hold the test of time real well for the same reasons. Also the PS2 era GTA games, Im playing 3 on a tablet, and it still kicks ass.

Nope, doesn't have to SP. Any game you feel that has stood the test of time (MP or SP) you can list them. :)

System Shock 2 It is one of the very few PC games made in the 90s that has actually aged gracefully.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It's from 1998 and it hasn't aged one bit. I still play it very regularly, both single player and multiplayer.

The Metroid Prime games also come to mind. MP1 and 2 from 2002 and 2004 respectively are still fantastic games to play.

Finally, F-Zero GX (2003) still is one of the fastest, most challenging and most polished racing titles out there. Wipeout can eat its heart out.

Then it's CS hands down. I feel I could play this game forever... as long as there were other people also playing!

Tetris is the best example. Still as fun and addictive now as it was upon intial release. The game isn't held back by its graphics because those shine in their simplicity.

Zelda WW is also a good example because its graphics still look great and the 3D Zelda gameplay hasn't changed all that much.

SMW did indeed hold up excellent after all these years and so did a number of other platformers on the SNES (and Genesis) most notably Super Mario World 2 and the Donkey Kong Country series. It's funny to see that these games have hold up far better than later games that came out in the early days of 3D.

Ocarina of Time. I was trying out some Wii games and was disappointed with how they looked on my large HDTV even with component cables, but I loaded up OoT and was amazed. It's held up so well, and doesn't look bad (considering its a N64 game) on my HDTV.

If it doesn't work in Bnet, it's not worth it. So assuming it doesn't, my point stands. I'd add Diablo 2 if it supported 1920x1080 resolution from BLIZZARD natively.

I agree. Isn't it sad the direction shooters have progressed? I expected Halo:CE battlefields times 10 this gen. Instead, we got hallways.

***The snes classics hold up the best though, imo.

Most Nintendo games survive the test of time very well, even if a lot of it is nostalgia (in the case of SM64). Personally, Super Metroid is the "best" game amongst all for me.

I think that (and the fact that a hell of a lot of people have said it on their list already) says a lot about the game already. If the PC demo has a community then who knows how big the original Xbox community is and how many people still play it. :|

I don't think the original was Xbox live sadly. I never got to play online. It would be huge though. Halo 2 was huge even after Halo 3 came out

Orginal on the xbox never went live, came out before there was Live, however the PC version has online, its awesome!

I think it's amazing games last that long. WoW is rumoured to last 25 years! That's crazy!
