...It's just amazing. It really is.
I got it about two weeks ago with my brand new Wii, and I can't put it down. I don't play regularly, but I have about 61 stars right now. The game is just flawless; the action never stops, the controls are super-tight, and the graphics are gorgeous. The soundtrack is the best part; the epic music in many of the galaxies, namely Melty Molten and Dusty Dune, draw you into the atmosphere like no other game.
I don't understand why people are complaining about it getting GOTY 2007. It deserves it. As to why other sites did not give SMG GOTY, I really have no idea; the bar for 3D gaming as a whole is raised incredibly high with Galaxy. I will admit that some of Mario's suits are pretty frustrating to control (I can do without Spring Mario), and ball rolling is extremely annoying, but overall the gameplay is just marvelous.
I must say that if you have any interest in games whatsoever, you must buy Galaxy. Until then, you're really not a true gamer.

I enjoy SMG but I dont think it deserved game of the year.
Your last comment was really lame.

I think it was a desereved game of the year because it didn't have the best graphics of a 360 or a PS3 game but it was awesome with level design and controls. The only flaw I would say it has was it was a little too easy.chocolate1325
I have a low threshold for difficulty.
Super Mario Bros. 3 has me pulling my hair out. I have more game overs than wins.
So Super Mario Galaxy was not frustrating for me, and that as the appeal for me. No frustration, all fun.

I only own a Wii for the unique control scheme. I just wanted to be able to try it first hand.
But people can not understand why some gamers have 0 interest in mario? Thats absurd. A good number of my friends dont play any offline games. Much less a platformer.
Game-play alone does not make a game for me. And mario's universe and story are deffinatly nothing I find interesting at all.

Have you played crysis yet? That's hardcore gaming, but I would not call anyone who has not played it or does not want to play it a false gamer.
They are into online MP games. I am for the most part as well. I have a few friends that enjoy offline games but they are RPG nuts and again, a Mario platform-er just does not appeal to them in any way.
The only reason I am playing Nintendo games again is the control scheme. Witch is really cool and fun to use but imo does not replace any other controller and certainly can not hold the mouse and keys jock strap.
Mario is a better game but I had a lot more fun with (still playing) Fire Emblem on the Wii. Mario is a better game then No more Heroes but I enjoy that more as well. All this blind Mario love does not sit well with me. As though it is the one game we ALL should enjoy.
Trying to group all gamers together is really starting to annoy me.

Game-play alone does not make a game for me. And mario's universe and story are deffinatly nothing I find interesting at all.
I think we can all understand how not everyone is going to love even the best games. But, i think the thing with being a hardcore gamer is that you're really into games in general.. so most games would "be on your radar", especially ones that are so acclaimed and different from alot of the stuff released in 07. SMG may not be everyones first pick, but as any hardcore gamer should check it out if they have the funds.
It sounds like your friends tastes in gaming is very limited. I wouldn't have thought a hardcore gamer could have such limited taste.. a hardcore shooter fan, sure.*
That's fine that his universe is not good enough for you.. but SMG doesn't rely on this universe to be so amazing. Check out alex's review, he mentions that one of the most beautiful things about SMG is that it doesn't actually need to be about mario. Granted, i understand if its not your cup of tea.. just as long as you don't try to tell us it's a poor game.(which i don't think you are)
EDIT: willy was saying he agrees that you're not a false gamer for not playing mario galaxy. He just thinks( and i'm with him on it) that if you are a hardcore gamer, mario galaxy should be something you want to try out(as would quite a few different games). That's all, i believe. Your friends that dismiss SMG, they don't sound so devoted to gaming.. perhaps to online gaming, but not gaming overall.
*just to clarify, as it almost sounds like an attack on fans of shooters. What i mean is that you can be a devoted fan to a particular genre of gaming without being devoted to gaming as a whole.

Someone who builds and maintains a 3,000 dollar computer is a hardcore gamer in my Book. Weather they are playing the games you think they should or not.
Not every gamer loves Nintendo. I grew up in the Nintendo era and I have never found what I want in Nintendo games. I guess when a lot of gamers were playing the SNES I still found electronic gaming lacking and still preferred pen and paper gaming.
It makes me sick that I can hear all this stuff about how everyone should play Mario. It is really not that special. It is a really good game, and great for a lot of reasons.
Occasionally a friend or co-worker will ask me what I think is worth playing (because they know I love gaming) and I will suggest Mario, especially if they have a child and want a game they can both enjoy. The ability for one person to control Mario and the other to aid them with the Wiimote is awesome. But if it is one of my gamer friends when we get together to game nothing remotely resembling Mario comes on to the table.
I really thought my GF would get a kick out of Mario, she is not a gamer at all, but if she is ever in the mood to game a little we usually pick a survival horror game. So Mario is not the game that everyone, even casual gamers, are required to love.
Yes, we can agree that Crysis is violent.
But to me a hardcore GAMER means somebody that loves games with a passion.
Doesn't matter what type of games, be it a strategy game, a platformer, a shooter, or a railroad simulation.
I think you mean hardcore FPS fan.
Of course hardcore FPS fans won't like Mario Galaxy.
That game is as violent as a Tom and Jerry cartoon.

When did violence come into this? I despise candy coated violence, witch is what Mario is.
You assume I mean hardcore FPS fan, even though that's not it. Simulations, strategy, FPS, adventure. My gamer friends love all that crap. But one unifying factor is the story and setting. Fantasy and sci-fi, or just some crazy plot for an adventure game go over well. Mario's provide game-play only. The setting and story provoke nothing other then apathy.
A lot of people don't like Mario.
It is too easy and doesn't give me a challange. That is what ruined it for me. Any hard one was just annoying rather than challanging.darklord888
So when its too easy SMG is no fun.. and when its too hard SMG is no fun. SMG just can't win can it?
Oh and I'll use this opportunity to throw in my support for the craziness that is spring Mario:D

I already said that it isn't going to be everybodys cup of tea.. in fact the first paragraph of my post was all about that. Did you think i was saying otherwise or something?
Wait, it makes you sick that people are suggesting a great game? Why? Because you don't like it? It's a superb game, and people with a passion for gaming as a whole(this is the key, as a whole.. not people with just a passion for a couple of genres) should try it. Yes, that goes for your friends too if they are hardcore. If they love games, they should try it.. they don't have to, and liking it isn't the only option. But since when was giving as many different games a shot ever a bad thing? Really?
We are not saying that everyone has to love it when we suggest it.. we're simply saying that everyone who has a passion for gaming(hardcore gamer that is) should TRY it. Just try, with an open mind. That doesn't mean they have to love it.
EDIT: so, your def of hardcore is based on money? :) I don't have an up to date pc..(though i could still play most games up until early 07). Are you going to try and tell me i'm not hardcore? I have what i can afford, and i try as many games as i can across all the platforms i currently have. And believe me, i want to try a bunch of games not on my platforms.. and i even pay attention to them.

The first few sentences starts off this this whole to being false. You are telling me something who is abled to buy something that expensive is a dedicated gamer or so called "hardcore". Thats alone is redicious. I am sorry but being able to spend 3k on whatever gaming and actually gaming is two different things. In my books, someone who is very devoted to gaming alone without carrying about if he/she has all those bells and whistles are the true blah "hardcores". That only means she is abled to spend large amount of cash than anything else. Someone could game much more and being more devoted than someone who can put up fonds to do so. Pretty much means anyone who don't have the dough or isn't abled spoiled aren't that termology.
Everyone plays Mario is what you said and everyone is enjoying greatly and recommending it, doesn't that kind of make it what it is; a superb game? People have varied tastes, but discrediting because on a personal level because you like something else is completely off. Like blahzor pretty much said, you can not be interested in it, but that doesn't take away from being a great game, just someone's different taste.

Are you talking about the part where Mario stand on a ball and you tilt the remote while holding it vertically to move. I loved that part, not to easy but fun. I thought that was genius.
I like how the music starts and stops when you move.
Actually I wasn't too impressed with the surfing bit. It could have been a bit tighter.
But I suppose this is just differing opinion.
While I agree most gamers should at least play this game some how, I don't think its fair to use it to judge whether people are true gamers or not.
