All action and cheap thrills, but in the end a very shallow experience.

Just beat it. Good game, but something is keeping it from being great. I felt it was missing something, but I didnt know what at the time. After thinking about it for a while I realized what it lacked: subtlety. This game is one set-piece after another. It's so meticulously placed and in-your-face I can almost hear the devs behind me saying 'isn't this cool?! oh my god did you see that?'. This is a game I would have loved back in my early teens, but now I just wish games would strive to be more than just the videogame equivalent of a popcorn-summer-blockbuster-flick. Alan Wake is one of the many examples of why games havent achieved art yet.

It's a shame. The tech behind this game is incredibly impressive, and the game is very immersive..

Strange, I didnt get that feeling at all. Then again, I really took my time with it. I explored all areas, looked for chests, read the manuscripts, listened to the radio shows, watched the televisions. In fact, there was a lot of subtle story telling in there. Sounds to me like you missed a lot of the game.

I haven't even played Alan Wake yet but I'm pretty sure it's nothing like a Michael Bay movie.

No... A Michael Bay movie would be that of the typical shooters out there.. Alan wake isn't like that what so ever.

Heavy Rain was pretty good and so is Alan Wake. Mmmm... think I'm gonna give a slight edge to Wake mostly becouse this game reminds me so much of Max Payne.I sure love Max Payne. :)

Completely wrong.

Michael bay movie?

Really?

Absolutely not.

It doesn't have terrible writing.

It doesn't have baysplotions.

It doesn't have weak characters who feel like they have a higher purpose.

No baysplotions

The problem is that Heavy Rain had way too many holes for the story to be ok. Like when
Scott drives into the mansion and kills 40 guards and it isn't mentioned again. That's just ridiculous.
Alan Wake is a psychological thriller, laced with suspensful mystery.

If anything, it's Uncharted 2 that's like a Michael Bay movie, with enough bullets flying to restock a munitions shop.

Not even close to possible for me to pass judgment yet. But I like it so far. Stopped playing at the apartment scene, where Max Payne was reading some weird remix of Max Payne related quotes and things. Not sure what it's supposed to mean yet, if anything beyond just being all "hey these are quotes from Max Payne!". Would be kind of an odd and contrived way to work in a reference. But for some reason I'd still approve. Wonder if they're inferring that Alan Wake wrote Max Payne and it's all meta up its own ass. That would be stupid in a way I could support.

No. Uncharted 2 has good character development, good interaction between characters throughout the game, and an enjoyable story, and the action sequences are enjoyable. Michael Bay movies have none of that. Gears of War is a Michael Bay movie. Boring action, lame ass characters, and a non-existent story.

Uncharted 2 had such vanilla characters. They were all exact action movie archetypes.

I remember you making a thread along this lines some time ago... some sort of comparison between Alan Wake and Heavy Rain. I haven't played either, but based on the comments here it seems you were playing the game and analyzing to support your preconceptions.

Modern Warfare etc. is the Michael Bayest game that has ever Michael Bayed. The series will likely never be outbayed.

Michael Bay movie? Horrible analogy IMO. Gears is a complete Michael Bay movie. Call of Duty could be a Michael Bay movie if it had a few more slapstick one-liners in there. Ditto Halo. (By this I don't mean that they are bad or lack substance, just that thematically and atmospherically, these games are more in line with Michael Bay movies than AW is). I get where you're coming from with the all-style no-substance thing, but I think there are better comparisons to be made than Michael Bay.

Michael Bay DOES have a few good movies. The Rock. Bad Boys. Bad Boys II. The Island. Arguably Transformers. Those movies all hit the spot and serve as great popcorn flicks with some good humor and cool action sequences. The Island, in particular, is heavily underrated IMO. His other stuff is mostly offensively bad.

all those games have an inherent quality for being videogames, there are far more variables that people should take into account for comparing to some movie/director quality... A Proper comparison? well that FPS that even in the credits there were a lot of curses, terrible gameplay, not story whatsoever even for a game Sadly I can't remember the name =/

No no... that's more like a Uwe Boll film. Even Michael Bay is above the abhorrent garbage that was Rogue Warrior. I can't believe Mickey Rourke took that role.

More laughable than comparing Alan Wake to a Michael Bay movie?

Uncharted 2 wasn't anywhere near as shallow as a typical Michael Bay Movie but the action scenes were definitely reminiscent to those in his films.

If anything, it's Uncharted 2 that's like a Michael Bay movie, with enough bullets flying to restock a munitions shop.

but this is more laughable tbqh

More laughable than comparing Alan Wake to a Michael Bay movie?

Uncharted 2 wasn't anywhere near as shallow as a typical Michael Bay Movie but the action scenes were definitely reminiscent to those in his films.

As I've stated before you can't compare games vs movies directly Story vs Story Characters development vs Characters development Because such variables weight way more in movies for obvious reason, as there are no variables like "gameplay", or you can't compare in a direct way graphics vs "special effects". In a lot of cases, movies don't even use special effects. As some games don't use even a story, like SMG games. That being said, the less difficult way to compare a M Bay movie vs XXX game, is comparing the inherent quality those have I will use RT: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/michael_bay/ 6% and 3.1/10 Compare a quality game like AW to a MB movie is laughable, and compare last years game most acclaimed game...yeah it is even more laughable
