Is the Alienware X51 representative of what the next-gen consoles will be like in power?
quad core i7 CPU, 8GB RAM and GTX 555?
Basically far ahead of current consoles but way behind the latest Gaming rigs in power.

rumours about next-gen consoles keep mentioning uber powerful GPUs etc but the X51 shows that is not very likely IMO.
It shows that power of a high end pc can be done in console size. You can put a gtx 670 in the x51. I have an Alienware x51 and could do that if I wanted to.Is the Alienware X51 representative of what the next-gen consoles will be like in power?

Mini itx cases isnt in the realm I would consider console size. The x51 is. Lol any mini itx case you could show me in the same shape as the x51 will show dimensions that are likely double in size.Possibly. No we are not going to be seeing a console with 8GB of RAM. First of all, It would drive the price of the console up, and second, Consoles don't need that much RAM, because they aren't running anywhere near as many processes as a PC. a GTX 555 or something similiar, might be possible, but again, manufacturers gotta keep the pricing down to a minimum, so i wouldn't be too surprised to see them sticking in something like a 2 year old card.
the X51 is overpriced for the components you can get, yes you can put a 670 inside the X51 which makes it a lot more powerful but also raises the cost substantially.
It would be amazing if the X720 or PS4 had a GTX 670 in it but I dont see it happening- it's an expensive card.

The tech would be far too expensive to put in a console and I for one would not want to see the price of the thing if it had this hardware. Consoles are a affordable way to game without the need to shell out for high-end tech for a PC. If a console had this hardware it would not be affordable for a vast majority of gamers out there.

PS1: 2 x16
PS2: 32 x16
PS3: 512 x16
Wonder where this is going. (hint 512 x 16 = 8192) Any less would be 'skimping'.
Don't forget how long this gen has been, and the only reason people think that 8gb is a lot, is that people aren't buying 300-400$ of ram anymore like we did in 2005. That much $ bought 4gb of ram~, today that much money buys 64gb of ram.
And 'keep the price down' herp a derp, the 360 was a damn good piece of hardware when it was released, up there with high-end PC's, and MS has already started taking losses on the hardware and favoring subscriptions to cover it with the 99$ 360 with 2 year contract for Live(which is overpriced). All MS has to do is make sure their service is marketed, and designed, well enough for them to work a whole gen based on it...

The only that comes that close is the AVADirect GT3
other then that, it seems that any mini itx case with dualslot support that any system builder can get there hands on is nothing other than a big Square/rectangle.

Large differences? Sure PS3, but not 360 considering GDDR3 has been used on previous PC GPUs, uses DirectX mix of DX9 and 10, etc. Although to this day PC GPUs use GDDR5 and DirectX11.
So really it is either Sony ditch their architecture and settle for something more PC friendly like the 360. For microsft they could put in some combination of RAM say settle for 1.5GB of GDDR5 VRAM and use 2-4gbs of DDR ram

As I said with custom builts they you have full control over what you want, you can pair a GTX 680 with an AMD FX 4100 if you wanted. But we're drifting away from the original argument,GDDR3,or GDDR5 is much more expensive memory compared to regular DDR3 RAM we use in our PCs...
That invalidates your post where you said how consoles should have 8GB of RAM because RAM is very cheap...
If I remember right,GDDR3 is 4x the speed of DDR3...
PC3-16000 DDR3 SDRAM has a transfer rate of 16 GB/s while a dual channel version has 32GB/s. XBox 360's GDDR3 transfer rate is 22.4 GB/s.
AMD A8 Llano APU can use PC3-16000 DDR3 SDRAM in dual channel mode and can deliver better multi-platform gaming performance compared to Xbox 360.

PC doesn't use GDDR3 as main RAM,unlike the 360...
That's an architectural difference right there...

Oh,I see, thanks for correcting me,it seems my last sentence is based on misinformation...

Well can't argue with that
Good...
I hope you(and some other SW Hermits) learned today why you shouldn't compare console RAM with cheap PC DDR3 sticks...
Depends on PC DDR3 sticks e.g. a PC3-19200 DDR3 SDRAM module has a transfer rate of 19.2 GB/s. A dual channel mode a transfer rate of 38.4 GB/s.[QUOTE="Rocker6"][QUOTE="NoodleFighter"]

Your statement would be Ok with slow PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM. As of late 2005, GDDR3 would be a good choice for the XBox 360. The next Xbox 720 or PS4 would hopefully have fast GDDR5 VRAM.[QUOTE="Rocker6"][QUOTE="ronvalencia"]

Anything less than PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM in dual channel mode would have a noticeable drop in frame rates with AMD A6/A8/A10 APUs.
System memory transfer rates would not be a big issue with a discrete GPU card enabled PC e.g. my laptop.

Mind explaining me this,then:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883155401
And look at the specs, just look how unbalanced it is...
I7-2600K(an overkill for gaming),paired with a mid-range OEM card(555 GTX).If you're a tech minded person,can you really call this a good deal?!
Rocker6
Depends, if they intend on playing CPU Intensive games (primarily RTS and Emulators) and stuff like video editing then yes. Otherwise they can settle for models that use Core i5 or Core i3. As I said with custom builts they you have full control over what you want, you can pair a GTX 680 with an AMD FX 4100 if you wanted. With prebuilts you have limited customizabilities unless you do them after market but it adds to the cost.
Sorry, makes no sense,I'm getting lost here...
X51 is marketed primarily as a GAMING PC is a console form factor. And give me ONE reason why would a GAMING PC have a "SKU" that contains an overkill of a CPU not needed in ANY game, and a gimped OEM GPU?
It's a heavily unbalanced system, made only to rip-off newcomers to PC gaming, who have larger budget, and severe lack of technical knowledge...
You can get models using Core i5 or Core i3, you're really only going to pay $100 if original wanted an i5 model and $200 if you originally wanted a core i3.
The GTX 555 which is in the model you're refering to can be consdered a gimped GTX 560 so it won't be as hot but will be a bit slower.
I consider the GTX 555 and Core i5 2320 to be the best option out of all of them. The CPU can be considered future proofing so the GPU is the only thing gamers need to bother with when they upgrade in the future. And it's not like you don't get any performance benefits out of it.
It's really up to the consumer, who actually has a Gaming PC but uses it ONLY for gaming?
The only complaints I've seen about the Core i7 2600 is that they chose it over a Core i5 2500
Also the switched the Core i7 3770k mainly since it consumes less energy and produces less heat.
