10. Mario Kart Double Dash (GCN)
09. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN)
08. Burnout 3: Takedown (PS2)
07. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (PC)
06. The Sims 2 (PC)
05. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
04. God of War II (PS2)
03. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
02. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (DS)
01. Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita)

So, there are some points about this list:

  • It very dramatically got reshuffled when I played my current #1 game last year. Before then, the top four games had been entries 2-5 (with what is now game #3 being game #1 back then, a spot it held on to for twenty years before it got knocked down last year finally)
  • I have only used one game per series, or this list would basically be all Zelda and Pokemon
  • No, seriously, my #1 game currently did something that I thought was not possible anymore, it made me feel when I was playing it the same way I used to feel when I played games as a 10 year old.

Okay, so that's mine. What are your top 10 games of all time, and why?

EDIT: With that said, let me get some honorable mentions out of the way:

Pokemon Emerald
Metroid Fusion
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Timesplitters Future Perfect
Fable 2
Metroid Prime hunters
Ratchet and Clank Size Matters
inFamous

Those are my top ten. They are the games that I have played the most times. The ones I know backwards and forwards. The games that shaped me as a gamer. They are the games I use as standards by which to judge other games. There are many of my favorites that did not make the list though that are deserving of mention.

They are as follows:

Pokemon Heart gold.

Crap I forgot about Super Metroid. This is too troublesome of a Question Char as I could probably make my top 50 and still forget games lol.

What I do is, I stick to one entry per franchise, generally, or my list would be flooded with the same few series, as you can probably see in my honorable mentions lol.

Exactly. You made me question my top 10 with a "EDIT". It only took 2 minutes, 2 minutes to be like "Oh crap...."

I suppose top 10 Franchises would be easier question.

There is absolutely no possible way I can determine what my most favorite games of all time are because I have so many I like most of them.

But I suppose I could manage to find the Top 10 games I just absolutely adore...however I will tell you that this list will change all the time.

So...Here it goes. LegatoSkyheart's Top 10 Games of All Time.

  • Rocket Knight Adventures - Playing this game as a kid was awesome! The game was nothing like anything I played on the SNES and it was first game I played for the Sega Genesis. It was fast, cool, you had Jetpack and when you swung your sword a cool crescent beam shoot out of it. I loved it, and it was one of the first games I played to where I beat it fully in the Harder Difficulties. That's dedication!
  • Chrono Cross - This game was actually my first RPG. Unless you count Mystic Quest. This game really opened a new genre of games for me and I enjoyed every bit of it. The Characters, The Story, I was inspired by it all, but the one thing that REALLY captured the moments of this game was The Soundtrack. It blew me away and it has stuck with me for all these years and I have yet to find a soundtrack as beautiful and mystic as Chrono Cross's.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - This Zelda is better than Ocarina of Time. *flame shield* At Least That's I think. I loved the Open World this game showed off, The Town Square was neat, The Dungeons were challenging, and Riding on Epona never felt as epic as it was before. This game was probably the Zelda they ever made and I hope the new one takes it to the next level unlike Skyward Sword.
  • Pokemon Soul Sliver - This was the BEST Pokemon game they ever made, and it's a remake too OF the best Pokemon game they ever made. Why? It gave you 2 Adventures, The Johto Adventure and the Kanto Adventure. No other Pokemon Game has ever gone in that same scale as before. And Soul Silver ENHANCES THAT, Not only do you get the 2 quests and all of Sub Quests you get a Safari Zone AND a Pal Park to enhance your Pokemon catching needs. And The Best part, the first Pokemon in your Party Follows you. Talk about immersion to the MAX! Why don't they keep that up? That is a feature that should be ALL Pokemon Games. Not just Yellow Version and Heart Gold and Soul Silver.
  • Fire Emblem Awakening - This game got me out of a funk I had early last year. I wasn't all too sure about stuff at the time and when my friend was telling me that I should go get Fire Emblem and then watching some Videos and seeing all of the Ratings I just said "Okay" and I got the last Copy over at Gamestop. Best decision ever! Because this game was TOP NOTCH! I enjoyed every moment of this game and it was addicting too! Couldn't put it down for weeks!
  • Persona 4 Golden - Truly a Master Class Game. On the opening I just went "What the heck? This is Mature? Some Anime Weeaboo junk." Then the Title music played. At that moment I knew this wasn't just gonna be some average JRPG and when I started and kept going I found myself deeply immersed into the story and well invested into the characters and I could relate to them all too well. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and sure enough when I beat the game and heard that title tune I knew I was right. That this game wasn't a Normal JRPG, It's an Amazing JRPG.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 - The Opening Tune, The Boss Fights, The Scenery. It's truly is a testament to Kojima's Legacy. It really captured the spirit of James Bond flicks and other Hollywood action films that Kojima went after and to this day there hasn't been another Metal Gear game quite like it.
  • Mass Effect 2 - The game that made me LOVE The Mass Effect series. Mass Effect 1 was okay, I had to trudge through it to beat it. But as soon as I jumped into Mass Effect 2 I was immediately hooked. The Action was fair, the RPG elements were sub-par, but The interactions with your Crew and Everything just fit. The Suicide Mission is still one of the greatest Action Sequences in all of Gaming. Truly a Must Play.
  • Uncharted 2 - The Game that made me realize that We CAN have a Movie like Experience in a Video game. I was just floored at the game, It just looked way too insane. I felt like I was watching a movie and I had to progress in the game to find out more about the movie. It was something I never experienced before and it was probably the first game I ever played that had me play for about 8-9 hours straight. No Breaks. Probably my favorite game for the PS3.
  • Yoshi's Island - For Some Reason, I cannot put this game anywhere lower than the number 1 seat. It pretty much sums up a good portion of my childhood. I remember playing this game over and over, trying to find all the secrets and collecting all of the Gold Coins, and that Final Battle I remember I was shaking and could feel my heart pacing. This was the game I had no help from my older Brother or anything of the sort. I got to the final level by myself and I was going to beat it. And When I beat the game it was suddenly over, the adventure of Mario and Yoshi ended and that end music is just so beautiful, because you know it's because of all that you just went through going through the forests, the deep jungle, The Ice Caverns, The Fields, The Caves, everything...Just so that Baby you carried through out the entire game could re-unite with his brother, be taken to his parents and grow up to be one of the greatest Gaming Heroes of all Time. It puts a tear in my eye.

Of course this list tends to change. I wanted to put Skyrim in there, or maybe Guilty Gear, or perhaps Street Fighter IV. But these games I think are probably my favorites of the bunch and it wasn't easy to come up with this list.

So there you have it.

for the 500th time that this thread has been made in the last couple of years:

  • Parasite Eve
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Megaman X4
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Chrono Trigger (love it so much can't even play it again without getting depressed knowing that JRPG's have really gone downhill and there's no going back seeing how every recent game is just following the terribly awful trends set by what the anime industry has become today.)
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Super Mario Bros 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 3
  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Capcom vs SNK 2

Super Metroid, Megaman 8, Street Fighter II, Marvel vs Capcom 2... I need to think this list again. Super Metroid at least shouldn't be out of the Top 10.

Too many games to make an overall top 10. Besides, I'm pretty sure that list always changes when I do them.

It was not. it was more of movie than game. Max payne was also cinematic but it was perfect balance of two. comic book style cutscene with amazing storyline and amazing gameplay too.

Games like Max Payne are not easy to top my friend . Both original games are masterpiece , created by talented folks at Remedy and written by genius Sam Lake . Even after over a decade , there is still not a single Hong-Kong style action game that can surpass both MP1 and MP2 .

Rockstar tried real hard but failed . Max Payne isn't the same without Sam Lake's iconic writing . MP3 was weaker than first two games , gameplay wise as well (and story , as we know , was mediocre at best) .

My list can change slightly depending on my mood, it's so hard to pick.

Anyway for now. I'll stick with one game per franchise too otherwise about 4 games would be Final Fantasy games.

1. Final Fantasy VII(ps1)

2. Mass effect 2 (360)

3. Super CastleVania 4(snes)

4. Skyrim (pc)

5. Football Manager 2010 (pc)

6. Penumbra Black Plague (pc)

7. Resident evil remake (gamecube)

8. Pokemon red/blue (gameboy)

9. Minecraft (pc)

10. FSX (pc)

Honorable mentions that sometimes make my top 10.

- panzer dragoon 2 (sega saturn)

- deep fear ( sega saturn)

- parasite eve 2 (ps1)

Fortunately or Unfortunately, I'm not as old to the gaming industry as most of you guys are so mine are gonna be different. A lot different.

  • Assassin's Creed 2
  • Dishonored
  • Crysis/ Crysis 2
  • The Witcher 2
  • Mafia
  • Tomb Raider (reboot)
  • Devil May Cry 4
  • Far cry/ Far cry 3
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadows
  • Return To Castle: Wolfenstein

It is never too late , to play all the stuff that you couldn't play before . I'd say , start with Freelancer . One of the best games ever made . You won't be able to stop playing it . Great story , huge galaxy , interesting characters , movie like cutscenes and graphics still look pretty good .

Then go for Half Life games , No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 , Max Payne 1 & 2 , and Thief trilogy (original) . GOG version of Thief : Gold (enhanced edition of original Thief : The Dark Project) , comes with updates that support latest resolutions and hardware+OS .

Ordered merely by the release date timeline

  • The Last of Us (Because It delivered the message that even if you're as heart-broken as a father who embraced his daughter to her moment of departure, living 20 years like a dead man, in a savage world; no matter what ,you'll find something worth fighting for)
  • Read Dead Redemption (Because I belive that people can change ,even if they're the devil incarnate)
  • Heavy Rain (Because it's the first game ever that offered you meaningful choices with meaningful consequences)
  • Alan Wake (Because I couldn't tell if that was true or dream ?! )
  • Bioshock (Because of Innovation)
  • Shadow of The Colossus (Because it's s piece of art)
  • Fahrenheit (Because it blew my mind right apart the night I bought my PS2 ! )
  • God of War (Because of wonderful epic soundtracks, wonderful epic story ,fantastic gameplay)
  • GTA San Andreas (Because it's Groove St 4 life ! )
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Because of an unforgettable story about loyalty and treachery)

I know I forgot some games...

First off, @charizard1605: sold out the one true GOAT (Alttp) not once, BUT TWICE by placing Persona AND Pokémon, yes POKÉMON ahead of it... smh char. :P but I'm gonna look past that for now...

Don't know if I can order these but I'll do my best. Consider my top 5 ordered...

1. Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past - one of the few games that hasn't aged a single day.

2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Repiblic - most immersed In a game I've ever been.

3. Mass Effect: the second and third were amazing... to me, the first is a masterpiece . Bring back the effin mako bioware... just because the execution wasn't perfect doesn't mean the idea is bad. Arg!

4. Actraiser: one of a small hand full of games that I would consider perfect. WAAAAY ahead of its time and collecting dust on a shelf at square. Shame. The music alone pi$$es all over whatever your favorite game is.

5. Final Fantasy IV: Best jrpg of all time. Period. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll toss your controller several times... (don't play this game in front of girls)

6. Eternal Darkness SR: I read an article that only like 200k people bought this game.... wtf?! I feel bad for those who never played it.

7. Fallout 3: Bethesdas best game to date.

8. Red Dead Redemption: loved RDRevolver in gen 6, wasn't expecting the masterpiece we got in Redemption. R*'s best game hands down.

9. Portal 2: in that small handful of perfection.

10. Eff the haters, Rogue Legacy, simple pure unadulterated gaming bliss... your job is to clear the entire castle... shut up and do it.

This is always extremely difficult to do because I find it hard to stack newer games up against the older ones, but I will give it my best shot.

-Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (the best platformer ever made)

-Pikmin 3 (the clear best game in my favourite franchise)

-Metroid Prime (the most well made action adventure)

-Super Punch Out!! (Just as addictive as can be)

-Yoshis Island (once my favourite platformer)

-Dragon Quest VIII (blew my mind for being the first RPG to transform my beloved RPGs of the SNES era into a full 3D world worth exploring)

-The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker (Hit a cord with me because of the island based exploration and the best story the franchise has ever seen)

-Batman Arkham City (It does so many different things and they are all at top notch quality)

-Donkey Kong for the Intellivision (the game that started it all for me)

-Super Smash Bros. Melee (just so many hours of fun with friends)

No Breaks. Probably my favorite game for the PS3.

well movie like experience is not a good thing. games should be gamey.

Well then it's a good thing that Uncharted 2 was the perfect balance of the two.

Nah, The Last of Us was a perfect mix. Uncharted skimped big time on the gameplay.

@scottpsfan14: you heard my side of this already. Every single idea about good game design that I have developed from playing games over the past 20 years is what Uncharted 2 does the opposite of at almost every single turn. The game was torture, but I beat it just to say that I beat it. Now I use it as an example of what not to do when making a game.
