Mass Effect 2 was the only one I liked...Morrowind was an absolute terrible game....I created my character and I had no idea what to do next...They just throw you into the world without a clue of what to do and say have fun. Not to mention there was no fast travel and you had to walk EVERYWHERE. It was such a pain...In Fallout 3 it felt like it was impossible to aim without using V.A.T.S. I'm aiming straight at this guy and he seems to dodge every bullet like he's freakin Neo. And why almost every Western RPG be Medevil Fantasy based or Futuristic Sci-Fi based? It seems like they never come out of these two categories. I'd like to see some diffrent variety.I miss the old days of RPG's on the PS2...there were so many good ones....Now there's hardly any memorable ones on 360/PS3. I know I can't be the only one who likes these Western made RPG's....anyone else share my opinion?

Try Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. The first 3/4 of the game is amazing. Alpha Protocol is also a wrpg not in midieval or sci fi.

Lol. K man. Your not the only one. Perhaps your just 0.1% of the people who don't like them, but it's alright. Some of us try to be hip and cool. It's fine, there are better rpg's out there like: JRPG's! Weeee!

Try more of the Bioware games. It sounds like you need something linear to push you along and that is what Bioware does best.

I think JRPGs are a lot better. If you haven't played Chrono Trigger go find it it's the greatest JRPGs of all time

You're not the only one, but the problems you're listing are more specific to Bethesda games than they are Western developed RPGs as a whole. Though this generation hasn't really provided us much other than those sort of games. It's been pretty barren for both JRPGs and WRPGs this gen, really.

I like WRPG's but I do agree that if you played a couple, you basically played most of 'em.

The same could be said of most genres, too. There really is an absence of creativity in videogames today.

Perhaps. But films and music are the same way. It's not the developers fault. People like to buy the same generic crap every year, so then they give them the same generic crap every year.

Yep, Especially FPS. Can't remember the last time I played a creative FPS

(Maybe Portal 2 if thats considered FPS, But I highly doubt it)

Agreed. The player has to find a genre s/he likes and stick to it, is all. You create a much more interesting hobby for yourself when you actively seek out games of the genre you like, be they whatever you'd like, and compare/contrast.

On topic, I dislike the WRPG as well.

Humanity is just awesome like that.:D

We complain about everything being the same and wanting something different and then as soon as something different comes out they become frightened because it isn't "the norm" and ignore it.:P

I recommend Dragon age Origins(not 2),The witcher 1/2 and kotor1/2.

Yeah I can't seem to get into WRPGs. There were a couple admitsI tried like Fallout 3 (at least I got it for free) and it seems these games doesn't suck me in nor do most look interesting anyway.

I love them all, but like some others have said, look into Biowares other games since they tend to follow a story better than bethesda's. The Witcher 2 is also another good one to try out (if you don't have a pc it's coming to 360 this holiday).

Agreed 100% with the topic. I love the Mass Effect series, but when my cousin let me borrow Oblivion I thought it was so boring. It was his favorite game ever so he shouted all these praises upon it. I'm sure it's a great game, but the world was just so big. I had no idea where to go, what to do, and everything felt to slow and boring. As much as people like Fallout 3, I refuse to buy it because I know I'll just be wasting my money. And I'm one of the few here who wants no part of Skyrim. I'm not saying WRPG's are bad, they just aren't for me.

Final Fantasy all the way 8)

All I'm getting from this topic is that some people who don't like western rpgs think that Bethesda represents the genre.

Wait, you're actually complaining that bullets didn't go where your gun is pointed? That's how the game is supposed to be, it would just be a shooter if they were 100% accurate. You have to raise your skills to do more damage and be more accurate.

TailBlood

That's a fair assumption. Honestly it is. Most JRPGs follow the FF formula pretty close. If you don't like FF, you prolly won't like most JRPGs. The things I don't like about elder scrolls applies to 'most' WRPGs. So, I don't really like them.

Remember, I said 'most', not all. Games like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana break the JRPG mold, as do games like Mass Effect break the WRPG mold.

Outside of MMO´s,grind is more related to JRPG´s than WRPG´s,a lot more,so that doesn´t even make sense. And,unlike other styles of RPG´s,you actually affect events in the world on many WRPG´s.

Wow, TC sounds like he can't figure stuff out for himself. He is right about one thing though, the gunplay in Fallout 3 was absolutely terrible; You really did need to use VATS most of the time to kill enemies. I don't even want to see him try The Witcher 2, he'd never make it past the tutorial.

OP, to me it just sounds like you lack patience. If you took more time to understand how each game is played then maybe you'd enjoy them more.

Hey some western RPG's are great! Like....

Um...

Uhhh....

TrapJak

I'll bite. Ultima 7, The Witcher 1 + 2, Ultima Underworld, Arx Fatalis, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Gothic 2, Mount & Blade: Warband, Fallout 1, Fallout: New Vegas, Drakensang: The River of Time, Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Divine Divinity, Might and Magic 6 + 7, Septerra Core (it was developed over here), and Guild Wars.

I just listed the ones off the top of my head that are strong on story or exploration. If we went into action RPGs the list would double in size and if we included average or good games it would easily get 4x bigger.

that's the beauty of them is the scope and exploration, especially with morrowind. its truly an incredible game that you can really become absorbed in if you put in the effort.

they aren't your cup of tea I suppose, probably final fantasy 13 is more suitable for you.

I suggest you play the games Whiteblade999 recommended, and to that i'll ad:

  • Fallout 2 (with the restoration mod)
  • Temple of Elemental Evil (the greatest representation of DnD on the PC, and one of the best games ever made)
  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (easily one of the best RPGs ever made)

Well I don't like Final Fantasy, Jrpg's suck.

TailBlood

Don't be a child and enlarge your horizon instead of following the crowd, Final Fantasy is a extremely poor example of what the height of JRPGs are, regardless of what the journalists might tell you.

The best in that series (FF6,7,8,9) are infinitely inferior (so inferior it's not even funny) to the best the genre has to offer (Chrono Trigger, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Xenogears, Vagrant Story).

I dislike every Western RPG Ive seen and played except for Oblivion and Skyrim. I mainly hate the idea of choosing your own path as that means a less focused story. Developers need control of your choices so the story can be good.

I think you need to love Anime/Manga to like Jrpg over Wrpg. Its pretty much a fact.

All the people i know who like Jrpg are all Anime fanatics, and all the people who dont like Anime, like Wrpg more, this is how it is.

As for me, while i do watch anime once in a while, i think that most of the Jrpg (like most of Anime)sucks.

I hate the fact that i need to read wall of text every 5 min, since when games are for watching?

"but story is all that matter"

Want to know where the storyline is the only thing that matter? books.

When i want to play, i want to PLAY.

Jrpg can die for all i care.
