Nothing, and I mean nothing will ever beat Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3.  But Amnesia is one of my favorite horror games to swing my way in a long time.  Absolutely fantastic writing.  I pre-orded Machine yesterday.  I can't wait to get my hands on it.l

I love a lot of the chanegs they made. Especially no more oil in the lantern or tinderboxes and no inventory etc. they all bogged down the gameplay with too much tedium and instead of adding tension they got annoying

I liked all those things.  They were put their on purposes to slow down the gameplay.  Honestly, if lantern wasn't an issue you could easily beat the game in less than two hours.  Its very short.

Oil was never what slowed you down in the first game, it was the monsters who got pissed off when you used the lantern.

It was redundant. Light stopped you going insane, yet if the lantern ran out the insanity was just a noise and screen effect. nothing major. You can complete tge entire game without with or without the lantern. Plus there's still a lantern in some parts, you just don't need to fill with oil cos it's modern age electricity times. Now you can't save up all your oil or tinderboxes and make light wherever you want. If you're in darkness you're stuck in darkness basically.

You don't need a finnicky inventory to slow things down, all you need is some well placed horror scenarios and monsters .

Hmm, some of those things did put me off the first game. The fact that monsters seemingly vanished at times didn't sit well with me either. But damn was it scary. I'm still 50/50 on this, but I guess I could always use a horror title to play. Plus, I loved running past monsters and being chased when the 'proper' way was to wait it out, haha. Decent price too, and I might as well pre-order along with Rome 2.

Uh no, there were only a few instances were you actually had to hide, most of the time you could easily run and dodge the monsters.  My point is if the lantern were not an issue.  Most people would run through a big chunk of the game.

Well it sounds like we will agree to disagree. I am not talking about the inventory, just strictly the lantern which I enjoyed.  It may seem pointless but I feel like it was a detail to merge the player into the world better.  Also, if your sanity drops you take more damage and your screen becomes completely blurred.  Solving puzzles releaves that insanity which gives puzzles purposes other than, "I woke up, and now I am stuck in a castle."

Subtle details, but different strokes for different folks.

Maybe I'll get it when there is a lull in gaming early next year. Too many games coming out in the next few months to really bother with it.

I wouldn't say "getting back into PC gaming", but I have a laptop that is able to play some games :P Nothing fancy, but I am keep busy with genres that aren't really available on consoles. E.g: RTS/Turn based (a la Total War then). So, for now I'm chilling with TW: Rome, Age of Empires 3 and the CoH expansions.

Well, from what I gathered you played exclusively on consoles for a long time. Yeah, it's great to have a PC for those genres as they really don't work well with a controller.

Look into humble bundles to find games that don't cost much and don't require hefty PCs. Well, usually because they are doing an origin bundle atm with some titles that do require a pretty good PC like Battlefield 3 and Dead Space 3. But the older ones in the bundle don't require that much anymore.

Anyway, if you want we could play some Age of Empires 3 together :)

So looking forward to this game, the first one was amazing. And I'm quite a fan of the Penumbra series.

This is the longest game that they've been working on, and should prove to be very promising.

Great news.... nothing makes you feel more vulnerable than having no weapons.

20% off is great for a pre-o sale... its usally 10% on steam.

I thought it was a collab of sorts? Like the Dear Esther team designed the levels and then ran it by the Amnesia team for feedback.

Frictional do get to look at it and see how it's going but it's thechineseroom who are the devs. Think of Frictional's role like Kojima's on Rising Revengeance. They have input but overall its thechineseroom's call

Frictional are the publishers but the game is designed by thechineseroom and written by the head of them

Loved Amnesia, can't wait to play this :D.

I hope it doesn't suffer from the same faults as Amnesia though. The main problem with amnesia for me was that there weren't that many intense moments, and the monsters stopped getting scary halfway through. These are minor problems though because I still loved amnesia, but I wish it was more scary. The Justine expansion was really intense in the end, so something like that would be pretty cool. I haven't seen gameplay though, so I gotta check this out.
