Yea, not going to happen. Sony has more chance of going under than they do driving the other two of the business.

lol
I've said it before, this is gen 6 all over again
So:
- PS4 gains large market shares against MS and Nintendo
- MS releases a new xbox before the PS5
- Sony releases the PS5 a year latter and it loses the market share and eats up the profits the PS4 generated
That about it?
Anyway, the PS2 to PS3 transition, and the 360 to xbone transition show why the console manufacturing market is so undesirable to most companies, due to it's outdated nature
I think if MS had not fucked up with the X1, it would have been selling just as well as the PS4. Nintendo could just as well be selling consoles like hotcakes if they stopped screwing up
@super600:
PS2 got a huge proportion of it's sales after it became dirt cheap and started being brought out in secondary markets. Same deal for PS3, yo ;)
I think Sony would very much want to crack 100 million. Can't be the first of the PS consoles not to!
The last time I heard anything about the ltd of the ps3 and 360 in developing countries(secondary markets) was a couple of months ago. Both consoles aren't selling that amazing(they are doing okay) in these markets and neither will be able to take advantage of these markets during this gen.So both consoles will continue to decline into irrelevancy in terms of yearly LTD in the next three years.
That would be a bad scenario for gamers. But I don't really think that'd happen. If not MS or Nintendo, some other company will manage to thrive in the industry. The worst part of this is that no analyst would even be considering this if not for a series of bad decisions from the competition, instead of great accomplishments by Sony.
I think console gaming should be based on a committee like bluray, DVD and VHS players. That would benefit both the industry and consumers in great ways because gamers wouldn't have to buy multiple consoles and developers wouldn't have to create multiple versions of the same game.
They just want to prepare our minds for the end of consoles in general. Its business and banks are very involved. Sony wants to stream games into your veins with PS Now, and MS is prepping to do the same. Thats a future I wouldnt be happy to see, but which fanboys are going to stop it?
Things were different back in the PS2 era. The world and economy was different when it first launched. Consoles games were cheaper as well.
I could see this happening in today's economy. You already hear about the new CEO of Microsoft not really liking the Xbox division because it's a money sink and feels that the money put in R&D would best be used elsewhere. I can see Microsoft bowing out before Nintendo.
Nintendo would not go quietly. They still print money with there handhelds. Outside of the Wii U, they still managed to make profit when there consoles didn't sell well (GameCube, N64).
An analyst that works for a large U.S. bank tries to predict something and you guys are taking it seriously? He works for a bank that has been in crisis mode and owes the federal government billions. Did he see that coming? I wonder if he saw the collapse of Merrill Lynch and sale to Bank of America before it happened too. I doubt it. I think our "analyst" should focus on Merrill Lynch / Bank of America and not Sony.
i dont give a shit....hopefully nintendo puts their games on it at least and ill be fine.... if nintendo sticks to handhelds and decides not to put their software on consoles...then i'll be handheld only guy :P
3rd party Nintendo, something we all want and can agree on.
Only if it doesn't destroy them, and to guarantee that it would have to be on open platform. So on PC.
Which may not be as crazy as it sounds at first. No policies, they can make their own PC hardware, and they still have a handheld/console in the 3DS line that can sell to families and kids who don't have a PC or don't know how to operate a PC.
Hermies already begging for ninty games and they aint even dead yet.
Sure, playstation may dominate like PS2 but MS can afford being in an inferior position with all their cash. And i like that, competition is good. This buying timed exclusive stuff is bull though and I hope they're just doing it because it's early in the generation and their studios weren't ready. I want MS to put out real exclusives so it gives people a reason to own the system like they did with 360.

Notice how people don't care much for the Sony exclusives... thanks for pointing out that we have taste.... for games... not movie games.
I highly doubt the PS4 will dominate like the PS2, considering how well entrenched they let Microsoft in the console business with the 360. Sure the Xbox One is lagging in sales, but it's selling pretty well despite all the controversy. It's only a matter of time before the Xbox One will claw back market share, especially in the US.
Which is a good thing, not a bad thing. Competition breeds choice.
Only one keeping them from it are Microsoft. Nintendo is a joke in the console space at this point and I don't see that changing under their current management.
Sony won't completely dominate this generation though because Microsoft will price drop the X1 as much as possible and try to buy as many timed exclusives as they can.
Nintendo will be happy with the little profit they make from using outdated Wii U hardware and 1st Party games..

The investors at MS are already wanting to get rid of the xbox brad as it has yet to make one dime in profit. The have dropped the webcam after spending 500 million just on marketing for the device. If they drop the price the shareholders will go crazy and bill will have to come back to save them.
That would be great it make it so much easier for consumers to buy a system if only Sony was in console market.
"Meanwhile, just five years ago, Nintendo was at the top of the world, and unstoppable, and look where they are now." lol even 5 years ago Nintendo sucked, sure they sold many Wii systems but they missed all multiplats 360/Ps3/PC gamers got to play.
Playstation and PC is all you need for gaming
PS4 was a perfect storm.
Thanks to brilliant Titles from Naughty Dog like The Last of Us and Uncharted and Sony making smart decisions on their Online Front at the end of 7th gen.
And with Nintendo's Mess up of the WiiU (Underpowered, lack of 3rd Party, Slow UI,) and Microsoft ROYALLY messing up Xbox One (DRM, Always Online, Basic Online Features needing Xbox Live still)...
Sony was practically given 8th gen on a silver platter, With only PC showing it's actual place in the Gaming world.

The wii was a fluke it had a gimmick a low price and great marketing. Even so it's attach rate was horrible vs the hd twins. The last couple of years there was no games on the wii and sheep had to beg NOJ for games. Nintendo killed the wii cause they were not making money on it in the end and it was the "leader" of the last gen speaks volumes. Meanwhile both the ps3 and 360 are still selling hardware and software.
Never have I know a console to be the market leader and get no 3rd party support. In the end that killed the wii along with the host of other issues.
An analyst who works with Merril Lynch/Bank of America seems to believe that Sony might eventually manage to have an exclusive monopoly when it comes to consoles, driving out Microsoft and Nintendo entirely.

Personally, I think that's bullshit and unlikely to ever happen. Because, yes, I don't think people understand how soon fortunes can be made and reversed in this industry. Sure, the PlayStation, and Sony, is dominating right now, but who's to say that Xbox or Nintendo won't make an unexpected comeback next gen? or that PlayStation won't fumble badly? Or that there won't be an entirely new entrant altogether?
I don't see MS coming next gen if the xbox one takes a beating not with the investors pressure on its back,Nintendo i think they would either way so it would probably be PS vs Nintendo next gen.
The day Sony is the only console maker out there is the day I exclusively game on PC.
Yeah because gaming wasn't gaming before the xbox right.? lol
@inb4uall: The PS3 sold over 80 million consoles and will probably be the best selling console of that generation. They missed up at the beginning but it was still successful.
The PS3 is suffering dramatic sales drops, and it is still more than 20 million units behind the generation leader. It will not end up at the top.
The PS3 is like 83 million dude, the wii stopped is not moving any more,so 2 years more sony shipping even 6 million PS3 and they would be very close to the wii.
lol

Hhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
Yeah and for $600 dollars again right.?
Big part of sony losing teh market wasn't the year late but the $600.
In fact that scenario you describe could actually turn like the Dreamcast which went first and loss,i don't think Sony will do a $600 dollar console again,so release 1 year latter with stronger hardware and a nice price could kill the xbox like Sony kill the wii U this gen, going first doesn't warranty success.
Either way keep damage controlling for the xbox hermit..lol

Were is the xbox one selling well.? I am sure it is behind the 360 in LTD at this moment, and the 360 in the same time frame in 2006 out sold the xbox one from January to August in all NPD,is under performing vs the 360 and the 360 wasn't a runaway success in its first year either.
that's not a good thing, companies need competition or they get lazy and abusive in their business models. With sony destroying compeetition but microsoft still existing as the underdog of the console race i am more than ok.
I'd drop console gaming and go handheld only.
Ehhhh. I think that's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. Back in the 80's, Atari was the only game in town. They ended up tanking because they assumed consumers would buy anything. Its a self-regulating system.
The PS4 is doing well this gen but it's not doing well enough for Sony to drive Microsoft and Nintendo out of the console industry, lol. And really, nobody should want a single console manufacturer to exclusively dominate the industry
Either way keep damage controlling for the xbox hermit..lol
So i'm a hermit now, despite you calling a fakeboy lemming the other times. Sure Tomato, sure.
I agree with Char's piece that it's not likely to happen due to the PS4, but not because the PS2 didn't manage it. Nintendo and MS are in far different positions today than at the turn of the century, and both in reality are far more likely to ditch today than they were then.
Nintendo is likely one CEO away from listening to the growing chorus of investors, analysts, and fans (including Charizard) in ditching hardware all together. A position unthinkable ten years ago now looks like an inevitability to a growing number of people. I think Nintendo gets to gen 9 primarily because investors have given Iwata some extra time at the helm, and by the time they call for new leadership Nintendo will be heavily invested in Gen 9 hardware (which I'd guess launches in 2016).
In the early 2000's the XBox was a core part of MS's long term strategy. It was the latest in a string of MS attempts to become the "center of the living room" that Bill Gates saw as vital to MS's future. Today that dream is largely dead, as the current CEO is aware that the living room itself is no longer the centerpiece of the modern family. Nadella's recent comments marginalizing the importance of the XBox reinforce that belief. Would it shock anyone if MS bowed out? Personally I think MS continues into gen 9 because they believe (IMO correctly) that current leadership can produce a much better platform than Mattrick's boondoggle, and because of the inroads the brand provides MS with today's youth - a demographic that otherwise generally takes a dim view of MS's offerings. But MS's multi-billion dollar investment into a multiplatform game should serve as a bold announcement that MS far more concerned with software platforms than hardware platforms going forward.
Funny thing is I can see Sony one day being the "last console standing" because of Playstation's importance to Sony's hardware sector, and the company's unwavering commitment to manufacturing even when the economic realities don't support it. It wouldn't shock me to see Sony trying to keep the Ps platform going long after most gamers have moved on from the concept of the console all together.

Yes, but it's not getting sales when it matters in terms of being a competitive console that can push M$ and Nintendo out of the console market.
Not talking about THAT, just interested in what it's final total will be. I'd put 20 yoyos on it breaking 100 mill and being the best selling 7th gen console, eventually!
A tough pill to swallow no doubt. But lets cut the shit and accept it. Sony domination continues from where the PS2 left off.
The gen 8 crown has already been decided. Sony wins.
What happens if Sony goes bankrupt next year? Do they still win?

If Playstation survives with all its exclusive devs intact, who cares?
It's just a company, sucks if you have stocks of that company though.
Anyway, Sony won't go down, their insurance branch is doing too well for that.
Consoles are ALL crap, with clunky controllers, low resolutions, having to pay for playing on-line - they're total jokes compared to PCs. I play at 25x16 with cool mods and huge on-line communities of adults. In a couple years I'll be playing at 4K while you twerps on Nintendo and XBone will be playing games at triple digit resolutions. I know you kiddos don't even know what that means, which is a good thing when your feeling get factored into the equation.
If PS4 get some must-have exclusives I'll go ahead and buy one, but if Silent Hills comes out on PC too I won't bother with a PS4 until they get something exclusive and spectacular. WiiU and XBone will never get places of honor in my household because they're both wrecks.
Now, I'll admit that the cost of gaming at 4K is going to be so high that I won't do it until something absolutely amazing comes out, but I'll do it for sure when the time comes...
that's not a good thing, companies need competition or they get lazy and abusive in their business models. With sony destroying compeetition but microsoft still existing as the underdog of the console race i am more than ok.
This is true,Sega and Nintendo been there forced to make great things great games and great deals.
I'd drop console gaming and go handheld only.

See B4X does exactly this sh** a topic about dominating the market and you bring sony financial state..
Black4ce = B4X...lol
Xbox nailed it last gen on many fronts, and Sony still did extremely well despite the headway of their main rival. While things seem to have reversed themselves somewhat in terms of sales dominance, I think the healthy competition will continue. It benefits everyone to have 2 great tech rivals competing. There's room for 2 or more great consoles... maybe not in the minds of some console warriors... but there is. It's like two blades that sharpen each another.
i dont give a shit....hopefully nintendo puts their games on it at least and ill be fine.... if nintendo sticks to handhelds and decides not to put their software on consoles...then i'll be handheld only guy :P

You shot that blank so hard, dust came out your rod. You guys are trying so hard to push a narrative, and failing even harder. This, from the people who compared Gone Home to GOTG Last of Us. ahahahaha

Isn't that something to be proud of. That like a basketball game where one team gets to 90 points and the other to 60. Then 30 min after the final buzzer after the other team has left the court they finally get to 91 after shooting free throws. Just lol
An analyst who works with Merril Lynch/Bank of America seems to believe that Sony might eventually manage to have an exclusive monopoly when it comes to consoles, driving out Microsoft and Nintendo entirely.
The PlayStation 4 has had an amazingly successful launch, and a lot of this has to do with how well Sony has handled the system, and everything related to it, centering the console, its design, and its policies squarely on core gamers. But an equal lot of this also has to do with how badly the competition fumbled- if the Wii U or the Xbox One were handled as well as the PS4 is, then it’s unlikely that the current console race would be half as one sided as it appears to be right now.
Whatever the reasons, one analyst, who works for Merril Lynch/Bank of America, believes that Sony could actually go ahead and make the console space its exclusive domain.
“Sony has the potential to make the game console market its exclusive territory,” said Eiichi Katayama to The Wall Street Journal (a subscription fee may be needed to view this content).
Yeah, right. That sounds hyperbolic and unlikely in the highest degree. If the all empowering and encompassing PlayStation 2, which had the full support of every single facet of the development community, couldn’t do it, what makes anyone think the Playstation 4 will? I think a lot of people forget how quickly fortunes change in the console industry- the PS2 was great, and then Sony went from that to the PS3, before pulling a comeback, and then releasing a successor with the PS4. Meanwhile, just five years ago, Nintendo was at the top of the world, and unstoppable, and look where they are now.

Been saying this for a while. Credit Sony for making a great console, but if the other two had been reading forums, and not doing whatever the hell they want, it would be closer. Still with that I think Sony would still be ahead, just not as dominant.
1- Monopoly's are self destructive and harmful for the industry, so I don't Sony would even want that in the first place.
2- That's not going to happen. This analyst has the wrong perspective and is really missing a huge aspect. Sony doesn't dominate all audiences. The audiences who dedicate their time to Nintendo and Microsoft consoles are very different than the ones that game on "playstation", they look for different experiences. Especially in Nintendo's case.
What happens if Sony goes bankrupt next year? Do they still win?
At the rate the Wii U and the Xbone are selling... probably.
Yeah, I highly doubt Microsoft or Nintendo will be driven out. While I don't think it'll be PS2 levels, I do firmly believe the PS4 will remain the clear winner this gen. At this point, there's almost no real differences between it or the Xbone. Who knows, Halo 5 may kick start the Xbone renaissance, I'm just skeptical over that..
