If true the ps3 could really do damage with a price drop to $199. As much as I like the wii u it overall doesn't look like ps3 will have any problems handling it's third party games aside from the touch gimmicks thrown in. But who buys a Nintendo system for third party?

At least it won't break down all the time like your favorite console. It might have more than 3 exclusive franchises too!

Do you have any clue about Nintendo's financial state and such?

Report on it for the lulz, but it seems like you take this as a legitimate article, which concerns me.

I do know they took losses in the last quarter, and honestly this is a legitimate article. What's wrong with anything they are saying?

I do know they took losses in the last quarter, and honestly this is a legitimate article. What's wrong with anything they are saying?

Do you know why they took a loss this past fiscal year? How big the loss was? How much money they reportedly have in their bank, with no debt at all? That they can survive for another 50 years if they take a loss of this magnitude every year? That they have 90% of the current gen dedicated handheld gaming market? That 3DS is outselling PSV ~10:1 in Japan on a weekly basis?

Yes the market is shrinking, but 17m units sold in its first ~13 months on the market is pretty good. The future outlook becomes more promising as each day passes, now we know that 3DS will be profitable in fall. Imagine how 3DS will sell with NSMB 2, Pokemon Gen 6, Brain Age 3, Smash Bros. 3D, insane Japanese publisher support, promised western support and the inevitable revision.

When it comes to Wii U it's just your words against mine.

I just read the article, there are no facts presented that indicates Mario will go 3rd party.

Take a look at this:

Total app store revenue in 2011: $3.6B

Total Nintendo revenue in 2011: $12B

What does this tell you?

I know that revenue =/= profit, but the potential profit of being a hardware maker >>>>>>>> nintendo going 3rd party profit. It would be suicide to put Mario on iOS or whatever this stupid article is saying.

-------

"Nintendo will have to sell the new console for as much as $350 to break even, estimates Nanako Imazu, an analyst for CLSA in Tokyo."

This is not an unreasonable estimate, break even might be pushing it slighly but yeah. However this is neither good/bad, it's just a fact. Whether it's good/bad depends on how Wii U will sell, we don't know yet.

Since when do analysts know details about production and cost management? They have no idea how much Nintendo will spend making each unit.

I'm sure they can make a great next generation console with great first/third party support all for $299 and charge a healthy profit per unit and make bank.

The real challenge would be to convince the mass casual market to ditch their Wiis and upgrade to a Wii U. I'm guessing a majority of casual Wii owners played only first party games and now their Wiis are collecting dust.

So what? Just getting a paycheck and/or being published on media outlets doesn't mean anything more credible than a random forum poster's opinion. The media picks up on anything Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan say as well. I don't suppose you hold them with high regard do you?

True, but do we really think Nintendo would keep that momentum up as a third party? I surely don't think so, because I see Mario/Zelda/Pokemon/Kirby (at this point Metroid/Star Fox/F-Zero are locked in Nintendo's vault) ending up in a worse situation than Sonic.

No, I see them selling very well, and I still see them being top notch games. I just don't ever see Nintendo doing it, period. And honestly, I would rather have it that way. If someone is interested in playing a Ninty game: get a Ninty system, or bust.

It really makes no sense for Nintendo to make multiplatform games (outside of the company at least). Their games are usually directly tailored to the hardware and whatever new input device they have included with that particular platform. It's why I think Wii/Wii U shared games aren't entirely out of the question when they are including full peripheral compatibility with all Wii devices. It's just wishful thinking on my part though. Chances are the tablet controller is going to be front-and-centre for everything, and the Wiimote is going to be set on the back-burner. Hopefully I am wrong... because the Wiimote needed stronger hardware from the start to truly unlock it's potential.

I think some games may even use both. Nintendo want the motion plus to control all new Zelda games, but the tablet will be a fantastic device for displaying information and managing the inventory.

The Wiimote is here to stay, like rumble, analogue sticks and day 1 DLC.

Yeah it would be cool to have the upad in front of me for taking notes and other nifty things like interactive 3D maps (metroid prime!) , hopefully the controller comes with a stand much like the one that came with KI:Uprising for 3DS.

I agree that the wiimote will be relevant next gen simply because it is required for multiplayer.

What seems pretty funny is that you actually believe what your saying. Unless your a grade A troll but I'll bite.

Simply put = Wii U is a new console and 360 is from way back in 2005. Ragardless of that whimps power drones will snap it up because its the latest gadget. Sad but true. Wii U is a new generation in gimmicks and since it has the feeling of a new console its going to sell.

Hate to admit it but even if a me and you care about specs we aren't on the scale of the mindless drones absolutely desperate for new consoles. So desperate that they would buy this.

All signs point to the Wii U being a quality console with next generation firmly in mind. If you want a powerhouse machine buy a PC and you dont have to wait until a company releases a box that meets your standards.

People who honestly thing the Wii U is not as powerfull as the current HD twins are riding the good stuff. The Cheapest middle end PC hardware today smokes the Xbox 360 and the Wii U is going to be a optimised for playing games. Non of the big 3 are going to release a console packed with high end tech, the market has changed, gimicks and family gaming is far a more prominent and lucrative market than traditional core gaming.

D1zzy thats precisely the reason I play PC. Its likely going to be the only true hardcore system left. Some gamers call these gimmicks "progress" and sadly there isn't anything I can do to stop Nintendo and Microsoft forcing this garbage down my throat. True it may not be forcing but they will continue to make games with these lame inputs in mind until we either accept it or jump ship. Like I said I can't stop "progress".

Next gen as a whole will be about these lame gimmicks. I bashed Nintendo years ago for pushing this motion control and now an article literally appeared on CVG showing Microsoft patent some sort of hopital device you put on your arm. I seriously didn't think it would happen but Microsoft is becoming EVEN MORE gimmicky than Nintendo themselves.

These should just DIE! But thats "progress" for you.

Nintendo has always but always kept specs and costs under tight need to know basis so mah guess is that this is nothing but blind speculation and the info contained there in is worth every penny you paid to read it.

My guess, "N" at launch will certainly try to sell at a profit, quickly cut price to sell at cost and then need to lower it even more to spur sales. :o

Sound familiar ? :P

You couldnt play Skyward Sword with a controler, or a keyboard and mouse (well you could but it would be crap) and lots of other games are enhanced by motion controls. The PC is great for games, its far more accurate and comfortable for lots of types of games, thats a preferance. But for the sake of adding gameplay options, and giving us new ways to interact with the medium, we need to try out these gimmicks. Some of them may stick, like the Wii Remote, some of them will get left behind (virtual boy). Progress isnt just higher clock speeds and more shader crores.

If its only an option then why is it they made me use it for most of the Wii games they released. The gamecube and virtual console controllers were there as well and yet not many games at all used them.

And it isn't exactly progress when games are losing features. Its very much backwards.

Trying not to sound brutish there for what its worth. Its something people play for an hour and then suddenly think 'wait a minute why not just use the controller when it responds faster?'

Once the novelty wears off thats it. If you like it thats your opinion but lets face it. The only reason Wii and 360 fanboys are saying how 'this is the future and we must embrace it' is because Nintendo and Microsoft are forcing it down their throats. Just give them the finger. The companies don't care about them. They just care about their cash.

You sound to be taking this console war FAR too seriously.

Kinect has family on lockdown about as much as the Wii Mote did. Once the new shiney thing popped up (kinect), the casual stopped buying Wii's. The same will happen with Kinect. A new shiney thing will come along, and kinect wont sell for crap. Wii U might be that shiney thing with the tablet controls, etc. If Microsoft doesnt want shelves full of Kinect going forward, they had better do as rumored and integrate it into the 720.

$350 to break even isnt bad at all. That still puts it in a competitive price range with current gen consoles, and will likely make it the cheapest of the next gen consoles.
