The 'Xbox Maverick' console will be named 'Xbox One S All-Digital Edition,' preorders in April 2019.

"The disc-less Xbox One S would be a first for the company, offering fans the ability to ditch discs altogether and go all-in on digital game licenses."

Anyone think this is a good idea? How much does the elimination of the 4k Blu-ray drive actually save the consumer? And more importantly, how does BC work without a place to insert your 360 discs? Seems like an incredibly dumb idea. A roku-like streaming stick for $50 with a month of free gamepass and all streaming would make more sense. What are your thoughts?

BC of Xbox 360 games doesn't rely on disc, they can bought on the Microsoft Store, there's also a program that MS is launching that can convert your disc into a digital code. IMO this was all inevitable, Millennials and Gen Z have now finally toppled the traditional gamer demographic. The users who only purchase disc's, doesn't like on the move gaming and doesn't like Netflix subs pretty much have no leverage anymore and are now a declining audience.

There are more benefits in the Xbox ecosystem to go all digital vs physical. physical gamers loose out in XCloud access, which is quite a big sacrifice for the average consumer. PS owners will likely continue to purchase discs at a larger userbase since there aren't as many benefits to the average consumer.

@daniel_su123: How do you convert your disc into a digital code? Thru a PC I guess? Can PCs read a 360 disc in a typical DVD or Blu-ray player? I'm guessing you'd need Windows and whatever this new app is. Good news for BC lovers if that's the case.

Meh... A little late.... I only buy digital so this is a feature I want next gen, but next gen is soon... I suppose if we're talking a hundred bucks or 150 I could be persuaded, but I really wish this happened sooner.

In addition to the new console, there will be a ‘disc-to-digital’ program that, as the name states, turns your physical games into digital downloads. The idea is that you can take your disc to a participating retailer (like the Microsoft store) and trade in your disc for a digital download.

I dont care if its the future or what. A digital only console is not a product for me and never will be. Physical is the only reason why I still bother with consoles at all. Once that is gone I'll go full PC

You think Sony will announce their version soon-ish or will they hold out for a while, for more comedy fandom back-pedalling?

This has been said by Jez (author of the article) as well. I think this is a mistake to do this with the S. This should have been done with the X instead.

The S is too late and next gen is coming fast. There is a lot more interest in the X especially with more and more people finally getting 4k tvs and if they could get that price down to $199 they would probably have a good chance to move some consoles. For $99 maybe some people would get the S, but just don't see it.

Alas another missed chance from MS.

Curious what rules are for disc to digital with titles like Doom BFG edition from Xbox 360, I play everything digitally without disc and this is one game you can't play without it, so wondering if I get a disc copy will it be playable if I try doing the conversion program.

hum, no it isnt. I'll explain it to you nicely: I still support consoles because physical media is still easily available for them. Once that personal advantage is gone there will be no reason to support a system with paid online and worse services then those that are offered on PC. Simple, no? Yes, I'll miss the exclusives but if I cant have them on physical form then I dont care. Collecting boxed games of those I like is part of the fun for me

They're probably just testing the waters at the moment. Better late than never I guess. Maybe there will be some attractive trade-in deals on the horizon, who knows.

Oh...no.

I hope they don’t discontinue the current S and use this sku to push X sales. Backwards compatibility is a big selling point for the brand and your whole 360 disc collection becomes irrelevant.

Although, assuming the new console is much cheaper than current offerings, Gamepass and XBL are great attachment values. Sounds like MS is trying to make a secondary option for other console owners.

I wonder if it’ll be a smaller unit?

MS is just testing to see if this digital only console can work but at the same time, it's not as bad as Steam Machine though.

Like @the-a-baum stated, this is too late to be doing Xbox One S digital console and Xbox Scarlet is just right around the corner too.

Jokes about the name aside, I'm all for an all digital future. My PC doesn't have a disk drive and I haven't purchased a physical Xbox or PS4 game in some time. Digital offers the freedom of buying one copy of a game and playing the game on different consoles at the same time. I can't do that with physical. And with the Best Buy gamers club ending, I probably won't buy another physical game ever again. There's no point.

The UHD drive is a pretty big selling point of the S and X. Lets see where this goes I guess...

Make it $150 or less and its a strong possibility.

As long as it's solely an option, it's not all that worrying. Consumers are heavily moving to digital. That being said, for consoles, I do prefer hard copies.

Physical will always be my preferred method of buying games. I like looking at my library of games and seeing the fruits of my labor, the reason I work so hard. I enjoy loaning my games to friends so they can experience what I enjoyed, and showing them my "man cave" room dedicated to gaming and what I enjoy.

All of that is lost in all digital. You literally have nothing to show for your money spent other than a DRM locked data file. Not only that, but dispite digital being cheaper to produce, they are in fact more expensive than physical. I regularly find a physical games for 20 bucks while digitally they are still 60. Digital may be the future, but that doesn't mean it's in the best interest of the gamer.

Historically this is typically when we see the ultra budget versions of consoles come out. No disc drive also means one less point of failure from a repair standpoint as well.

Going by the article, it's still just a leak. Reactions are being observed closely ATM though, I'm sure.

It's inevitable at some point really, isn't it (even if it's not under that unfortunate name :P).

This makes Sony look smarter by leaving out the 4k Blu-ray player. MS must've realized that it's not as big of a selling point as originally thought. I also can't imagine it being more than $50 cheaper than the regular S model.

It like a 2DS when time to get the game it say enjoy it 3D but take home and a console only play 2D.

Surprise it not use Apple logic to call it R, because it before S. But with no 4K, only for game and not movie. 4K movie it still to be play on regular Xbox s, so which it better a old Xbox s or new Xbox s?
