It was made by Will Wright, who makes casual games. The entire time Will Wright said that it was to appeal to a massive audience leading to it not being a complex and hardcore game. People ignored it and played Spore with that mentality.
What's bugging me though is that people are acting the game is awful because it flopped. It got an 8. 8 isn't a bad score.

He wanted to make the game far more complex and scientific.
It was Chris Hecker who beleived it was too complex and had it... simplified for a wider audience.
Hence why the preview builds of the game months and months ago were so much better than the final product.

This is pretty much why Spore was such a massive dissapointment.
Interesting read, didn't know that. I guess we can always dream about "Heavy Science" expansion, but the creature part packs seem more likely. A shame, since I think it could still be saved with some effort.
