Another dev speaks out with negative criticism of the X1X, citing the poor CPU.

Well, it's happened again. Another dev, this time Bloober Team, has come out of the woodwork to say that the X1X is not as powerful as people might be hoping. The culprit seems to the CPU, which is being found to be a weak iteration over the original. A lot of people were saying from the start that this might be the case, and it looks like it is. Devs are having to work around the CPU issue to realize the X1X's potential. This is something they should not have to do. MS messed up.

http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/842084/Xbox-One-X-UPDATE-news-specs-release-date-price

Quote from the article:

"But what do developers think of the tech?

Bloober Team, who created cyberpunk horror game Observer, have had their say on the Xbox One X.

In an interview with Gaming Bolt, brand manager Rafal Basaj discussed the power of the Xbox One X.

He was asked whether Observer would run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on the upcoming Microsoft hardware.

Basaj felt the CPU found in the Xbox One X was NOT an impressive iteration over the original found in the Xbox One.

He said while there are improvements in clock speed and command processor instructions, the leap in GPU and memory allocation wasn’t as impressive."

Well, not surprise at all. Next gen will be more naive 4K for sure, not these mid gen craps!

As opposed to the top of the line, superlatively brilliant CPU in the PS4 Pro?

LOL at both the X1X and Pro. No one should be buying these mid gen upgrades.

Just wait until PS5 eventually hits for a real upgrade.

I mean, I don't get the point being made here lol. The Pro sucks on the CPU, GPU, and RAM front. The Xbox One X is really great on the RAM and GPU front, while dropping the ball on the CPU front. It's still a better upgrade, and better console hardware all around, than the Pro, or really, any other console on the market.

But lems told me the Potato CPU in the XboneX didn't matter and that the XBoneX is equivalent to a high end PC with a GTX 1070 ????

It has a poor CPU, but it's the best in the console business right now, as well as pretty much everything the X1X comes packed with.

This is a lose/lose fight for cows...

Your point was predicated on me coming into this thread and allegedly derailing it?

Then what are you talking about here? The Xbox One X's CPU being a bottleneck? That's neither news, nor even an issue (especially since far larger developers than these guys have mentioned it lets them maintain codebase compatibility, and for MS themselves, it lets them maintain full inter-compatibility with the Xbox One and Xbox One S).

So what is the point here? Some smaller developer, presumably without the resources to be able to fully bypass a hardware bottleneck, criticized said bottleneck, the existence of which is an open secret?

The point is simple. The thread is about a dev coming out to say that the X1X CPU sucks. Nothing more, nothing less. Discussion can build upon that point, of course, and I hope it does. But why is it that whenever an X1X thread is made, the first thing that happens is it turns into a PS4 Pro thread? Seriously. It's getting ridiculous.

And yeah, it's news. The guy literally just said it in an interview like yesterday. It is an insight into the workings of the X1X from a dev that is actually....working on it.

Well, yeah. And? It's not like I'm saying you can't do that. Just that it's wearying at this point. I think this insight from the dev into the X1X's inner workings and outputs is worthy of discussion. It doesn't have to be war all the time, yeah?

Would said CPU weakness prevent the console from reaching its full potential?

Basaj responded that, “The Xbox One X is closer in specs to the PC gaming rigs right now, which will always benefit developers releasing their games on multiple platforms. As long as the GPU is solid a lot of calculating can be moved from the CPU to the video card, so it shouldn’t be a huge problems for developers to fully realize the potential of the new console.”

@reduc_ab_: your OP is a selective quote meant to play up an alleged weakness in the system that by the developer in question's own admission isn't an actual weakness with tangible impact. You did not make this thread for innocent discussion, you made it to make the Xbox One X seem bad, the title and content of the post are both evidence. It at that point, someone wants to compare the system, with its weaknesses and all, to other systems to establish that it's *still* better than anything else on the market, now exactly is that not within the purview of the discussion the topic tried to instigate?

Are you actually crying because the Pro is mentioned in an X1X bashing thread? Isn't that what happens to ANY thread? It turns into an opposition bash no matter which console is mentioned 1st.

Stop trying to play the victim here. This IS typical SWs behavior from all sides. Don't start crying now or you'll end up looking like a hypocrite.....ooops just a bit late

Well, yeah, this is really a no shit scenario. The CPUs have been a downfall in these consoles since their inception. However, selective quotes on your part do further your agenda.

Regarding CPU issue, I don't think many thought it would. Trying to do native 4K will keep it back. As of right now, I could see it running 1440p/60fps at least and if Xbox One X could do that, I would've giving every credit to MS for achieving 60fps only.

Going by the article from the OP, I think what Rafal Basaj is trying to suggest is, why didn't MS learned anything from Sony's mistake with the Pro over a year later. If MS knew there CPU was garbage, why didn't MS use an even better CPU from the start? To me, MS had every opportunity in the world using Ryzen if giving the chance.

@davillain-: because a) the system was in development before the Ryzen was a thing and b) Microsoft has to balance cost effectiveness with power. Do you think the Xbox One X was spontaneously developed in a vacuum?

There's a workaround, yeah. But it's still a weakness. Bottom line, the CPU is not up to snuff.

As for all that other stuff you threw at me. You seem inordinately grumpy today, sweetie.

@davillain-: but they couldn't have. Multiple sites have at this point established this, it was literally impossible to have better hardware at this cost.

Look, giving Microsoft hell when they screw up, which happens on an almost daily basis now, is all well and good, but that needs to be both ways, when they do well, you have to give them credit, or you would just a fanboy. And we both know Microsoft have done really well with the Xbox One X

Well, it's not like I don't agree with you. It is one hell of a console. It needs exclusives, I think, but the bang for your buck is decent. If MS releases a solid VR headset I'd be tempted to get an X1X. Very tempted.

I flat out, clearly stated from the start that there is a way to get around the CPU to realize the potential of the machine. Come on, dude. Get off it.

@charizard1605: Look I'm not saying it's a crappy hardware at all, it's capable of a mid-range PC like for $500 dollar range, but this whole 4K machine isn't close to cutting it as it would be.

Edit: I also agree with @reduc_ab_ it needs more exclusive games to back up the console itself but we shall see how MS fairs this November.

Which is what I mention in the OP.

You selectively quoted/paraphrased the dev make it sound like a bigger deal than he was making it. you didn't even check the source article

"Although there have been improvements in clock speed and command processor instructions, the leap isn’t as impressive as in the case of the GPU and memory allocation"

Your thread title even seems at odds with the actual interview you're using as a source

"Xbox One X’s Full Potential Won’t Be Held Back By Its CPU, Says Observer Dev"

This thread is trash and the TC is trash.

Lock it up.

A lem wanting a thread lock on a thread citing a dev criticizing the X1X. Shocking. Shocking, I tell you.

That's pretty much my biggest point of contention. The whole 4k angle shouldn't be happening. The thing is not a 4k monster. Not even close. It's a good console, but come on.

Except you're harping on the the CPU issue even though the source notes that it's not a huge problem. And acting like he's coming out negatively on the whole system, when he doesn't seem to have a problem. And says in the interview that the CPU doesn't hold back the systems potential

That's not what he said or meant. The premise of your entire thread is based off selective quoting which many users have pointed out. The entire point of this thread is to bash something already known yet even your own article said it isn't going to change much since there are work arounds.

You play the victim almost as well as El tormented.

He says the CPU sucks. That's negative. There is a workaround, of course, but that does not make the negatvie statement suddenly positive. It is a criticism of the X1X. Live with it.

What you guys don't realize, or refuse to realize, is that I think the X1X is a pretty damn nice machine. As I've said many times, if MS puts out a solid VR headset I might very well get an X1X myself, as I don't game on PC, and would love a higher def VR experience than what I'm getting with the PSVR.

How about I throw stones at the PS4 Pro instead, then? Seriously, you guys are crazy. I keep getting pigeonholed as a crazy cow, when in reality I've gone on record I don't how many times badmouthing Sony. I've called the Pro a hunk of junk that I wouldn't spend a dime on unless it was on fire sale and my PS4 failed so much that I'm convinced at this point some of you are not reading what I type, or are reading very, very selectively.

I imagine the nightmare it must be to develop games for the PS4 Pro.
