http://www.destructoid.com/bungie-introduces-pay-to-win-boosts-for-destiny-after-they-said-they-wouldn-t-326888.phtml?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=Facebook

Bungie introduces pay-to-win boosts for Destiny after they said they wouldn't

For weeks now, Destiny dataminers have been hacking away at the game's code, looking for anything of note. Although they've found plenty of tertiary things, they figured out one huge addition -- paid experience boosts. The notion was quickly denied by Bungie, who noted that it was "just an experiment" and that they had no intention of introducing pay-to-win elements like that into the game.

Until they do, of course.

As of today, astute Redditors have located the existence of "level packs," which have popped up on the UK PSN for a whopping £24.99 (!). There's one for each (!) class (Titan, Warlock, Hunter), and it comes bundled with a few extra items in addition to a level 25 instant boost (which was granted for Taken King collector's edition owners) and a subclass boost. This is quite the conundrum for Bungie. It probably wouldn't have even been that big of a deal if they hadn't promised they weren't going to be in, Overkill style.

The level 25 jump doesn't concern me much, it's the subclass boosts. Players who opt to pay will inherently have access to new abilities for PVP that another player otherwise wouldn't, unless they opt to grind. Gone are the days of "only" cosmetic microtransactions. The floodgates have been opened, and the water is expensive.

As if this game wasn't full of low-life addicted degenerates anyway...

I agree that is a silly thing to offer and it's obviously a money grab. But level 25? Come on, that would take a weekend maybe. There is so much gear a person at 25 couldn't use. That's not giving them an advantage at all. And subclass abilities aren't a big deal either.

Oh wait, this is the Internet. I think I'm doing it wrong. OUTRAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better?

I can tell you guys upfront what Bungie doesn't tell you that you still need to grind your skills points and this instant level 25 is a rip-off. Don't buy it you guys, just shoot aliens for points and leveling up is were the fun's at and it doesn't take long to level up anyways.

Having said that, I been playing Destiny since day one, we all know it's a flawed game but some of us are still playing it and I find the classes and gameplay to be very fun and I don't plan on leaving Destiny anytime soon until Destiny 2 is announce.

Why I never buy this shit in the first place, sure people say you don't have to buy it or whatever, but the thing is the company is focused on this bullshit rather than making a good game or doing anything which is value for money and adds something for everyone to enjoy.

It was quite obvious what this game was prior to release due to the publisher and their plans, if you bought it and disapprove then you are an idiot.

Bungie forums are exploding haha so many Bungie fanboys trying to justify this outrageous price. All you get is "if you don't like it, don't get it" or "if $45 is too much for you, maybe you should get a job" or "you're poor if you find $45 being too much" ALL of them missing the fucking point. My hate toward this game is increasing with every week. Soon i will explode!!

I feel like Destiny has been this awful experiment on how to do everything wrong in a game and see how long they can keep it going...

Personally, I think they shouldve offered taken king for free to any early adopters of the vanilla game, Er sorry, the beta they released. Like, I have too much respect for myself than to follow that rabbit hole any further with my money.

I doubt it because Destiny is more popular than Halo. Both of them suck though and Halo has seen a huge decline in sales and popularity without Bungie.

The more i see of this game the more i'm glad its not stinking up the PC, its kind of tragic seeing Bungie reduced to the worst kind of devs just milking their game like its an abused COW.

These are the guys that used to make Marathon and Myth .....what the hell happened?

When Bungie made Halo the games outsold nearly everything multiplatform or not. Don't try the one platform excuse now. Halo 5 couldn't even outsell NFS which has been completely irrelevant for like a decade and racing games don't even sell much in the US.

here, i will say it for him; "if you don't like it, don't buy it". That's the typical answer of some1 who is unable of defending the undefendable. Been posting on the bungie forums for the past 20 minutes, received AT LEAST 8 similar answers, at least. Incredible how f*cking stupid some gamers are nowdays.

Why is this such a shock? This happens with pleanty of games now...

Christ World of Warcraft charges £40 for a level 1-90 character.... and there are what 11 classes on that game as apposed to Destiny's 3....

Most games will have mobile-phone-game style transactions now... because you have a choice... "Your time or your money" ... e.g, those that don't have the time, are more enticed by these kinda deals... "aint got a whole 24 hour weekend to level up a sniper? il just pay and work 2 hours...."..

I did this with MMO gold.... 1 hours pay would get me more than 10-20 hours worth of actual playing... and because its usually filler stuff anyway... felt no sense of "achievement loss" from it.

40 is technically the level cap but thats actually when the grinding starts to get you gear that lets you take on the end game stuff.

Eh, I don't care.

It's not pay to win actually since there is still more grinding after level 25....a good bit more.

As some one who has 3 characters over that level and one of them being lvl 40....it doesn't affect me one bit.

However the lying on Bungie's part does concern me.

As if there hasn't been enough shady shit surrounding this game.

Blizzard has been doing this for years for double the cost.

Who cares if a bunch of people want to overpay to skip the game? It takes less than 20 hours of playing to hit level 40 and about 3 hours to hit level 25. If somebody wants to waste their money to hit level 25 let them. It doesn't affect anybody else at all.

WoW is fucking stupid as well, you pay for the game, then you pay a subscription, then you pay for expansions on top of that, then you pay for other items and shit like a FTP game, and they can't even be bothered to serve the patches they use a torrent client, the actual ****?

People are dumb.

Bungie introduces pay-to-win boosts for Destiny after they said they wouldn't

It's one of the worst grinders I've played....and that part comes in end game/after main quest line....and you can complete it in one sitting... There are so many better grinders you can play....

Destiny was insanely hyped and highly anticipated....It became popular in no time....and introduced it's pathetic grinder elements to a fanbase that largely consists of people who have never played a game with those elements.... Now they think it's the next best thing.....while it has been present for years and you can find way better..Well, I'm assuming now.. I can't understand how people still play the game...all it's modes especially it's PvP model is below average...with serious net coding problems. The game has a terrible loot system that hasn't been improved... The only thing this game has going for it is the high production values.. That's all.

@Wasdie: Problem is, you're skipping playtime in a game with nothing to do. So what's next? They will charge $10 to level up a weapon? Charge $5 to being able to access The Tower? They're "saving" you time in a game with no content. You cannot compare this to WoW, a game with actual f*ckton of content.

Option 1- I give you a chair. You can sit on it or pay me $5 to sit on the same chair. -That's neither, not WoW nor Destiny. This is "optional" dlc's. Look no further than Guild Wars 2 and how their microtransactions is being managed.

Option 2- You're in a labyrinth, you need to find your way around. Its difficult but with perseverance you can and will find your path. You can also pay $5 so i find the exit for you. -That's WoW.

Option 3- You can sit on a chair for FREE. You can also spend 45 motherf*cking dollars to sit on the same chair. But hey! its an option, no one forces you to do so, right? -This is Destiny.

Not only are they charging money for something that should NEVER be even considered (this isn't a 10y old mmo with people who've invested thousands of hours, this is your cashcow on a 2y refresh timer) but you're cutting corners in a game with no gameplay. What the ****? Leveling up for the first time is the only progress you will find in Destiny. If you skip it, all that's left is daily chores and a motherload of grind. Grind grind grind grind grind grind every single day you log in to do the same shit and grind.

Absolutely ridiculous.

I feel like one could draw many parallels between Bungie and Rare, as sad as I am to say that. The Bungie of yesterday made shooters, third-person beat-em-ups, real time strategy games, and even a pong clone. Since the MS acquisition, they've made Halo, Halo, Halo, Halo, Halo, and Destiny (a very Halo-like shooter).

They'll always occupy a soft spot in my gamer heart, but I can't help but think the best days of Bungie are behind it... Time will tell. And I'll admit, nostalgia is a powerful thing, but if you've never heard of Pathways Into Darkness, you'd do yourself a favor by looking it up. That's a game before its time.

@silversix_: You're using a slippery slope argument. Your entire post is one large fallacy.

It's really not a big deal. They are just milking the whales. That's literally it. Nobody with half a brain is going to spend that much to skip gameplay.

I can see some "hardcore grinders" getting irate over this.

Still not as bad as selling you an unfinished game by pieces(seasons).

I agree with the content comments. As it doesn't affect me I don't care to much...but for the game and Bungie it's bad.

The whole appeal to this game is the gunplay and grinding with it.

Why would you take away half of that?

@ladyblue: um, that's pretty much what bungie did. They cut about a third of the content of the original game and resold it as TKK

Experience or level boosts aren't pay-to-win. Other games do them too and no one cares, so I don't see what's the big deal.

Lol... Density.

Betcha Bungie wishes they stayed with MS since if they were tired of Halos, they must be sick what they are required to do with Densiy. :P

Who says they are required?

$30 to skip from level 1-25? Absolutely not worth it.

Also, to those who thinks this breaks the game in any way, you're wrong. This boost is an overpriced shortcut, and that's it.
