Apple's chief executive Tim Cook reportedly visited the Bellevue, Washington headquarters of Valve Corporation earlier today, inciting questions about new potential for collaboration between the two companies. AppleInsider

Oh snap.

What could this mean? A deeper collaboration between the hermit Mecca and their sworn enemy? So does this make Apple cool, or Valve also now the enemy?

Maybe Cook wants to see how he can expanding gaming on Apple platforms?

No better company to learn that from than Valve. For awhile, I don't know if it is still true, they were the most profitable company in the world. They made more money per employee than any other company in the world including Apple.

Maybe Valve can divulge to them the esoteric secrets of making UI that isn't garbage.

As Wasdie pointed out, if Apple wants to keep expanding on iOS gaming then who better to learn from than Valve?

Enemy what? I think Mac fanatics have eaten crow too many times. Before, IBM was the enemy. Then Apple started using IBM CPUs. Later, it was Intel. Then Apple started using Intel CPUs. They kept insisting iTunes and iPods will never see "Wintel" land....... Geez. Enough already. There is no enemy.

No, don't put Steam and the App Store together, I won't let you! I don't want it! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! This would be interesting I must admit... if Apple bought Steam out or something too, then just think about who really owns the digital markets now... I'd say... it's Game Over for the competition. OnLive and Origin are doomed!! DOomed!! I want pie...

I don't really think Apple would buy out Valve. They probably just want to work with Valve on how they handle game distribution and game social networking.

The app store has thousands of games, but they are scattered and it's difficult to find the best one and the apple Game Center isn't as robust as it could be.

Gabe has said that they are interested in tablet/phone gaming market. Its the "new" thing, that is making alot money, case in point angry birds.

They dont want to be left behind. Like microsoft didnt go for internet sooner, and got left behind by google.

Considering Cook was the one that went to Valve, it's probably Cook trying to figure out how Apple can integrate with Valve somehow.

Apple isn't buying Valve. Steam is already a license to print money, so I can't imagine why Gabe & Co. would be willing to compromise Valve's *ahem* unique culture and management practices for the sake of adding a third Scrooge McDuck-type vault to his house.

I'd imagine it's about bringing proper Steam integration to iOS. I don't think anyone is thrilled with Game Center and I'm sure Valve would love to add iOS and Android to SteamPlay, so it would be a win-win for both of them if they can work out some reasonable licensing terms.

Well..Valve is privately held and there's no way Gabe will sell it. Cook propably wanted to learn from the best, especially seeing how much of a fail Mac gaming has been, despite all the effort put into it recently

Yes so what there are a considerable amount of companies that could do the same. Problem is apple are not aimed at that audience, apple and anyone with a brain is aware of this. you cant simple buy VALVE/EA ect and just expect it to print money by incoperating it into apple. Most valuable singular hardware company yes, and most powerful brand currently, BUT AT WHAT THEY DO. You expect a company whos philosophy is "Simplicity and casual user immersion" is going to largely effect an already established different niche? Apple is huge, but they are still a premium "Streamlined user" experience. Besides, the only area they own dominance in still is tablets.

No not phones.... you do realize android is the largest market share for smart phones right? only iphones are largest singular device. and is the exact reason apple has and will remain a niche. steamlining comes with a price of its own.

Valve is a private company and so cannot just be bought. It could just be a general visit, Valve has visitors all the time. At most it'll be about a collaboration between iTunes and Steam to help sell Mac games or exchange of market research data gathered from the platforms.

That would be suicide for Apple, I know they have a new CEO but I don't think he's that stupid. Apple's current resurgence is all due to them running a highly polished closed platform.

I agree that they are overvalued, but I think the losses over the last few days just reflect their lawsuit and a lot of people cashing in on the record high. I think the stock will break $700 by the end of the year, and then I will sell.

At what benefit would that be? to play all 10 games available on steam mac store?. The hipster culture is sickening .... if any other CEO went there it would be no big deal... because they are all busy DOING. not hyping crap. Playstation already did this long ago. Its obviously just better support and relations. hell Mr Cook has to try somehow, Gaming as in SOFTWARE gaming not APP Gaming is still a large reason for Windows Dominance, along with business, better developer support and scales with more devices.

Valve actually has quite a few Mac games on the Steam store. Maybe Apple wants to make their next mac powerful enough to handle every game on Steam at high settings so publishers will go ahead and just port everything over. It's not like it takes a beastly computer to play multiplats anymore.

My guess is an iOS game section on the Steam Store (this section will also be included in iTunes), along with Steam integration in iOS 6, replacing Gamecenter. I doubt Apple will get into console gaming.

Maybe, but even Valves first party games have considerably poor performance on MAC OS C compared with Windows equivilant as benchmarks display. Its not up to valve what OS has what games, its each individual developer. App developers flock to android and iOS.... because they know thats the established market and the kinda people they are targeting are there. Core Software Game Developers know that outside of already INSANE popular franchises (Blizzard, LoL ect) that there isnt much of an audiance in comparison on the mac side of things. Hell the closest thing they will get is the mac fanboys that are dellusional enough to believe bootcamping windows offers similar or better performance  ... omg I live with one, its hilarious.

and how is bootcamp any worse? lol Its windows 7 pro. Its the exact same thing only on MAC hardware. LOL like your custom buot rig defines the Windows experience.

*Looks at name* then looks at *Signature* then looks at *last post in this thread* .... im not going to get a serious response am I, but il humour. 1) You fail to factor in that bootcamp is still not 100% native and does NOT get equal performance, though it is considerably better than making a virtual machine with windows on. 2) That the majority of Apple users for MAC OS X are iMAC and MAC BOOK PRO Users, all running you guessed it, MOBILE HARDWARE.

[QUOTE="PC360Wii"][QUOTE="PurpleMan5000"][QUOTE="PC360Wii"] At what benefit would that be? to play all 10 games available on steam mac store?.

If Apple makes a new OS that is easy to develop games for (and an equivalent to DirectX), publishers will port all of their games over. Apple is slowly replacing Windows in the home PC market. I don't think they will ever overtake them, but they have enough of a presence that no publisher is going to ignore that install base, especially if the next Mac has steam integration advertising their games every time somebody logs onto the computer.

I guess I've just never understood why anybody who wants Windows on their computer would go ahead and buy a Mac when they could just get a Windows PC for a heck of lot less.
