[QUOTE="jun_aka_pekto"]What's the rMBP's native res and how well do the 650m run games on it? Dynafrom

Native res is 2880x1800.

Games run VERY well, depending on the age of the game.

BF3 = 1680x1050, High settings for 50-60+ FPS on 64P servers.

Skyrim = 1920x1200 Ultra settings, 4x AA, 50+ FPS

All source games = 2880x1800, 8x MSAA 120+ FPS

Shogun 2 = 1920x1200, High settings, 50+ FPS.

I tend to tradeoff quality for higher FPS, but for some people, they can play at 2880x1800 @ 30 FPS.

Lol what a bunch of crap a Plain Geforce GTS 450 is nearly 20% faster then the 650m and a GTS 450 averages with Skyrim 52 fps at 1680x1050 with 4x AA And BF3 averages 36 fps at 1680x1050 with high settings with FXAA Portal 2 65 fps at 1080 maxed out,

I'll admit that for the specs its impressive the thinnes and lightness of it it is but its defintly not the only light weight gaming grade laptop this gigbyte laptop is lighter $1200 cheaper and is close in cpu/gpu performance(and with both running at native resolution expect it to perform similair if not better in games). It also uses a 1600x900 ips screen what your missing out on is the higher resolution and higher dpi screen of the macbook pro retina.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigabyte-shows-off-14-inch-U2440-U2442-Ultrabooks-and-Carbon-X11-notebook.76029.0.html

DJ_Headshot

The 640/630m do not come close to a 650m, which stock is 20%+ faster. The higher clocked version in the rMBP would be even more faster. For $1200, the gigabyte is a rip off, considering it's just a timeline M5 but $400 more.

20% is definely close people raved about the 8800gt when it first came out was like 80% of a 8800gtx and that was only $250 cheaper when something is $1100 cheaper and comes that close thats definatly something. Especially since given the resolution on it you don't need as much power to run games well at the native resolution so the performance diffrence is a moot point. The macbook pro retina is not a bad laptop by any means its actually very good but its not "the best gaming laptop". Its not the highest performance you can buy for the money nor is the lightest gaming grade laptop you can buy and its certinaly not the best bang for you buck laptop. What is the best at is at having the highest resolution display in a laptop and for people who value highresolution+dpi in small laptop screen it is the is the best one currently and It fills that niche for those willing to pay the high price.

No, it's not the best at any category, but it certainly is the best combination. Sort of like MJ, not the best winner (bill russell), nor the best stats (wilt), but overall the best player.

It's actually much heaver at 3.5kg. The rMBP is 2KG. Almost twice as much, making it 6+lbs. True, some people may not have a extra $800 to fork over, but if money isn't a object then the rMBP is the best gaming laptop on the market.

If there are laptops that can play games better, then the rMBP is not the best GAMING laptop

So... You claim that a very thin laptop which gets extremely hot by doing nothing, and with no air circulation is THE best gaming laptop? Enjoy your paperweight in a few months, with the dust buildup, and overheated componants, it sounds like the dumbest use of said Laptop (be gaming on it that it).

But each tohis own I guess, as long as someone does acknowlage its thier own failt, and not blame it on hardware *rolls eyes*

Dynafrom

Harping some bs myth about overheating macbooks? Sure, the old ones overheat (I returned a 17" earlier this year). But the rMBP gets nowhere near as hot as the old iteration.

Nope, harping on very real physics of how thin laptops in general burns to a crisp with heavy load. Do me a favor and read up on basic physics and failurerates before pulling that bull on here again thanks. I hate how some people thinks that just because they are told so, basic rules of heat, dust and slim factors does not apply anymore. And fix the attitude.

Yeah it's pretty well known that MBPs and pretty much all laptops get hot while doing any sort of graphics or videos

having a strained back carrying a 6lb + laptop all day.Dynafrom

I understand the lure of lighter laptops for some people, I'd wager you have more pressing concerns if carrying 6 additional pounds is straining your back that much. You're more likely to develop back problems from sitting hunched over your laptop - which of course the even Macbooks are suspectible too.

I wouldn't mind having one during one of my trips abroad. Those have been lesser as of late. But, we do road trips back to Nevada and Arizona once a year.

 "The gaming performance of the GeForce GT 650M equipped with DDR3 graphics memory lies somewhere in the former 2011 high-end category between the GeForce GTX 460M and GTX 560M. The performance is exceptionally good in shader-heavy DirectX 11 games and benchmarks. However, the 128-Bit memory interface can be a bottleneck if DDR3 graphics memory is employed. Despite the slower core clock of only 735 MHz, the GDDR5-version of the card should be much faster. Demanding games of 2011 like Battlefield 3 will be playable in 1366x768 and medium or high settings. Less demanding games, such as Modern Warfare 3, are easily playable with maxed out settings and 1080p resolution."

Why do people keep harping the same nonsense? If you don't own a retina, then how can you describe gaming performance? The retina screen is not a gimmick, it's the real deal. 2880x1800 on W7, w/ 150% DPI scaling looks phenomenal. And the "weak" GT650 is actually clocked to GTX660m levels @ stock, and with mine, I was able to get +150/+500 OC, which increased it by a additional 12%. You can play NEW games at 1920x1200, as I've tested. Yes, you need to install W7, but since I had EE given from work, it was FREE for me. A good "PC" gaming laptop is a desktop replacement. It's not a portable machine. Something you carry when you commute would be a much lighter machine. The demographics for the rMBP is not for the highschool student. It's for the moving professional who can do some gaming while sitting on a train to work. And what "cooling" issue do you speak of? Anand did a analysis of this, with almost 0 throttling in games. I bought the rMBP because it had no PC equivalent on the market, and I can afford it. For the professional who wants a mobile gaming laptop, this is the BEST option.

Dynafrom
Nobody has ever sat on a train and played BF3 with a trackpad and enjoyed it. Ever.

I don't play BF3 on a trackpad, nor on a train. But I am playing Shogun 2 while commuting. Also for flights, and stays in hotels, I can play any of my games when I'm bored and away from home.

The issue is that no one really needs to play games on their laptop when on a bus (or a train). What is the point of getting a laptop out to play a PC game on a bus? The main issue I have with it is that one will have to use the trackpad, and most people tend to find them to be nigh impossible to use for games. The other issue is, most people game (as in actual game, not smartphone games) when they are at home, not when they are on the bus and etc. I dont understand how people can play a game at home and on a traina dn etc, dont they get tired of doing the same thing over and over? As for hotels, you could take a desktop replacement with you. Sure they are a bit heavier, but they perform significantly better (at gaming), and like I said, the Mac does have some cooling issues when it comes to playing games, the thing runs way too hot. I dont know how well that will affect the longevity of the thing, but I am sure it aint good for it. At the end of they day, it simply makes no sense to get the rMBP for gaming, because one can get significantly more powerful gaming laptops (with HD7970m or GTX680m or GTX675m) for the same or lower price, and with a bigger screen. The retina display does look great, but I am not about to pay $800 or so premium for that. One does not get wealthy by throwing his money around (a lesson people should learn, look at what happened a few years ago because many Americans were living way beyond their means, not saying that you are, but many were, and I am sure that many still are)

Appologises for the weight I mis-read the apple site and saw 4lbs as 4kg.

It's not $800 cheaper, it's £800 that's $1264.72 (at todays exchange) more for less hardware. Apples are very pretty and Retina screens are first class but as with all Apple products they are vastly over priced and under powered. Onlt Alienware come close to Apple for rip off prices

The retina might not be the best in raw performance, however it's the best "portable" gaming laptop. What a joke that PC manufacturers still continue to make 2 inch thick, 7LB+ monsters with crap TN screens for $1799.99+, when a thinner, similarly specced, high quality rMBP goes for sub ~2100.

You really are completely oblivious to technology aren't you? You do realize than there is nothing impressive about the retina display? I guess compared to other laptops it is decent, since every laptop ever made has a GARBAGE screen. Still the, retina blows compared to something like a CRT monitor, plasma TV or CRT TV. or AMOLED mobile screen (something Apple doesn't use in their iphones, they use regular S-LCD over the vastly superior Super AMOLED Samsung uses) I also think the Retina is a TFT display as well..

PC gamers like poorly constructed casing along with ghetto mods to their system, and are supposely anti-laptops as if they set the standards. They have trouble forking in $ for softwares, and now you're asking them to pay those amount for the best laptop in the world? They rather buy a cheap plastic Lenovo and run lowly 720p TN screens.

Mr_BillGates
no, I'd prefer to play on my 106" screen projected by my SXRD projector worth at least two RMBPs. and on a gaming PC that runs circles around that rMBP! I have a smart phone for portable usage and a simple Dell laptop that my school gave me for free to do school work, notes, presentations etc.

Actually I know more about tech then you do. I've worked on PC's probably longer than you've been alive for. Comparing desktop displays to laptop ones? LOL Talk about grasping straws. Stick with LAPTOP displays ok?

HAHAHA. Oh wow. Funny. A guy going around boasting about a display resolution thinks he knows more tech than I do. You do realize that resolution is only one of many aspects of a display's performance? And its not even the most important one. Can you guess which 3 aspects of picture quality matter more than resolution? My point of comparing to desktop monitor is: You buy a TV for its picture quality You buy a monitor for its picture quality You buy a laptop for 99 things, but picture aint one.

Says the clown asking if it's TFT tech when all LCD panels fall under TFT. Care to compare an IPS with a TN? Or MVA? A laptop can be bought for the screen; suppose you're on a train, where you can't fully extend your laptop screen. A TN panel will have it's colors distorted on anything less than perfect vertical angle, whereas I can watch my IPS screen on all sides. My PC monitor, a LG HDTV LED screen is IPS, as is my 27" secondary Samsung. The retina is on par with both displays. Pretty good for something that I can carry around.

Resolution is not the deal breaker, VIEWING angles are.

So can anyone else with a laptop then, simple fact is that any time you're using a laptop to game whilst "commuting" it's in a place with power, which negates battery, and with a place to rest the laptop, which negates weight.

PC gamers are as ignorant as consolers when it comes to Mac. Similarity? Both are living in the past. Get with the time, this is post-PC era.

Dynafrom

MMm, if you're talking about desktops I'd have to disagree. Sure a lot of PC gamers put gaudy looking LED fans, with ugly cases. But take for instance my rig:

IMG_0853.jpg

I use a very simple TJ09, which is very high quality.

That's still kinda gaudy. Light up knobs and a window?

To be fair, the light up Apple logo on a MacBook is no better.

MAC's are overpriced PC's, they have been for years, and they still are. Any one who really believes they are going to do better by spending double for a PC that has a 1/4" smaller thickness and .25lb less and thinks it will actually make a difference in their day to day life is probably extremely stupid or extremely weak. Not to mention the reason gaming laptops are usually thicker/heavier is to accommodate better thermal designs, better airflow + suitable heat sinks... the mac is good for light gaming here and their but probably requires an apple care subscription for when it inevitably cooks itself.

and I thought that the best gaming laptop should have two GTX680M and not a GTX650M, but then again we are in SW that everything is possible!

Whenever my GTX650M is used my battery life gets cut in half. Couldn't imagine how fast two GTX680M's would drain a typical laptop battery.

I priced out a Lenovo that was equivalent to a 13.3" Macbook Pro. With the addition of a DVD-ROM and 32GB SSD over the matching equipment... it cost half as much. I don't get why people buy Apple hardware. Even less so after Apple won a lawsuit based on the copyright of geometry.

Not for $2100 it isn't. That's a rip-off that anyone (except for Apple fanboys) should see a mile away. Not only is that laptop more expensive than even an awesome desktop PC, it's can't be upgraded at all, not even the Hard Drive (which is completely solid state).
