Are Breath of the Wild and Mario Oddysey truly deserving of their 97 MC score?

Never care for their MC or any game for that matter but I play both of those games and they met my expectations for an Nintendo exclusive games. I did enjoy Breath of the Wild more so than Mario Odyssey but still, both great Nintendo games. Both MC scores are fair if you ask me.

No I agree that BOTW is indeed overrated and this is coming from a Zelda fan. Ocarina of Time is still the goat of Zelda but gamers these days are really trying hard that BOTW is the best Zelda since slice of bread and I think the game is good but not the best Zelda I played so far.

At any case, MC doesn't decides me of a game I want to play or sway me away. I'm just a simple gamer🤷‍♂️

BOTW yes

Odyssey no, I like the game but it isn't very memorable and just doesn't have any staying power. I don't really hear people asking for a sequel or a follow up of some kind. The game itself isn't really brought up much either.

But it could have the Wind Waker and Sunshine effect, released and then quickly forgot about people thinking they are average, then two console generations later people love them.

Only time will tell.

The problem with Nintendo Exclusives is that they release in the same generation as all the other games, games with better graphics, more engaging stories, and games not afraid to try new things, so safe by the book Nintendo games kind of get left behind in our thoughts. BUT since they are safe, polished and by the books they age well so people generally agree they are great games years later.

He isn't wrong you know? Nintendo and its double standards are a thing for a while. I would say every nintendo game is worth about 1.5 to 2 points lower than what it gets on a scale of 10. They're far behind competition in every aspect.

Mario Odyssey level design and variety has some high points, but is overall just okay. Not interesting enough for me to run through them again.

BotW performance issues were largely ignored by reviewers, but it's pretty bad. Shires are a drag and I find it hard to imagine they could not come up with more variety here. Exploration is still fun as hell.

I think the critic scores are a bit high based on my experience. Seems like most people here agree.

I can see myself going back to play BotW a third time, but I don't even want to finish the post-game content in SMO.

The former game IS a port. And doesn't matter. SEGA had a ton of badly received ports of their former first party stuff (minus maybe SA2 and Skies of Arcadia on GameCube, and some of their Genesis/MD compilations). That still didn't help their reputation.

Mario, I greatly disliked. Let's just say if you replaced every Mario character and enemy with original characters and enemies and then changed the name, it would have scored a 6 out of 10 here.

Mario Odyssey... no. It's an 80 at best.

Zelda deserves the 97.

BoTW is a definitive yes, one of the best open-world games ever designed IMO.

Odyssey was a great, not on the same level though.

I'm going to say Mario 3D World was better than Odyssey ... but i can see the appeal of a semi open world Mario Game and it was very well done in this one, even if it had some bland Worlds like the Lost Kingdom and the Bowser Kingdom was pretty much designed like a 3D World level ... still, i think it is easily a 90 score game.

About BotW ... yeah, is hard to disagree with any high score it got. You can talk nonsense all you want about hardware and stuff, the truth is that the design, gameplay and overall structure of the game, is outstanding. Not a single one of your playthroughs will be the same and you will always discover something new. Sure is no perfect, but this one i pretty good.

I mean, the game is fun and has its charm but a NINETY F*CKIN SEVEN?! No F*CKIN way. Come what again? I have more fun with the so called "sony movie games" than these "heavy on gameplay" Nintendo "hardcore" (lol) games. I think a game like GoW or Horizon have more gameplay than this... its just jumping, throwing hat and little else. Almost no challenge at all. And people praise this to heavens?!... Why?

Playing this game just confirmed to me that Nintendo scores are inflated as hell by critics due to nostalgia and nothing else

I think BOTW was decent, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. The puzzles where pretty basic and the game itself was pretty easy when I played it on Wii U back in 2017. I think it was good but not great. I beat it and moved on to other games about two weeks after I bought it.

Mario I can't really say because I never played it. I kind of stopped paying attention to Mario games after Mario64. Colorful platformers just aren't a genre of games that interest me.

@girlusocrazy: Mario Odyssey to me is still a fun good Mario game but it clearly isn't Mario 64 level and to top it off, it's still the best Mario game Nintendo had ever put out, nothing comes closer to Mario 64.

After all the talk about Sony games being more movies than games with little to no gameplay and Nintendo games is where gameplay is at, how astounding it was for me finding out that GoW has more gameplay and more challenge than SMO. Yeah, I said it

Asking questions like these years after release in retrospect in bad taste IMO.

After years of self reflection and having your standards adjusted as time moved along, few if any games would validate the score they received when they released.

If you're making this argument within the same year a game releases it's relevant because all games compared to it fall within the same timeline and standard benchmark.

For me, BOTW was too big and empty. I would've enjoyed it much more if it was smaller and more focused, and I didn't have to spend most of my time spamming the sprint button running from place to place. I honestly had more fun with Skyward Sword.

Gotta love cows hypocrisy. Always talks about GOTY and MC scores until Nintendo releases the game and then, the media is biased/can't be trusted etc etc.

Weird thing is that i like Zelda, Mario not that much, but in my opinion Odyssey is way better that breath of the wild as a game. so by that i can say that Mario Odyssey kinda deserves the praise and Breath of the Wild not.

Botw yes i enjoyed that game even if its my first zelda game. SMO on the otherhand is quite underwhelming.

Its a good game but you have people saying its the best sony exclusive ever or even best video game ever and that just makes me lol. Horizon zero dawn, Ghost of tushima, spiderman all are much better than GOW.

They're certainly more deserving of 97 than any Rockstar games, that's for sure. Rockstar games score 97 despite having shoddy gameplay mechanics.

@zeldabotw2: I agree with you on Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghosts of Tsushima. Spiderman not so much. I liked God of War and I respect the developers because they took the series in an entirely different direction and were still successful despite people's doubts. It was risky and could've flopped big time imo
