Seems like it would be more difficult to make a third person shooter, especially these days with the cover gameplay system in some third person shooters.

So are first person shooters just lazy versions of third person shooters?

You know that all games are done on a 3D engine these days right? The only difference between a third person shooter and a first person shooter is the graphics and coding of your charcter, everything else is exactly the same aside from the angle of view.

actually it is not. I believe that Remedy(and Digital Extremes (making Dark Sector) agreed with this) put it perfectly when they said that in a 3rd person game you have to make objects at a distance progressively larger in scale otherwise objects look goofy.

Here is the video with the Digital Extremes guys talking about that.

So, they aren't EXACTLY the same.

You know, before Gears of War, nobody ever talked about 3rd-person shooters.

Just because they're the bees' knees now and seem fresh because they've been absent for so long doesn't mean every FPS should be a 3PS.

FPS's tend to be a lot faster and better controlled(BOOM HEADSHOT), TPS's tend to be based on strategy, cover, etc.

Considering the amount of time and skill that it takes to make a good 1st or 3rd person game, I doubt either one could be called a "lazy" version.

What's up with all of the "lazy" developer talk nowadays? Most of those guys work sweatshop hours to make these games and what do they get? A bunch of people sitting on their asses calling them lazy. That's friggin amazing.

I'm not ragging on the TC, but I hear the term "lazy developers" being thrown around a lot. It's pretty narrowminded.

i think fps's are way better, but i do think games like R6 Vegas are very nice, where its 1st person, but you can take cover and it turns to 3rd. 3rd person shooters are cool, but i like the experience of being the character, rather than looking at him.

No...

I just see them as shooters, whatever camera aspect doesn't matter to me as long as gameplay is good.

Although its not quite a 3rd person shooter, I think RE4 is a great example of the difference between the two. 3rd person can offer a very different experience.

I remember back in the days of MoH:AA there was a code you could type into the console to change your view from first-person to third-person. Voila. That's the difference. Cover is important in both FPS's and 3PS's, it's just not some "built in system" like Gears of War. Seriously though, is this claim completely based off Gears of War? Which games have the "cover system" besides that one?

Different experiences, for better or for worse. Like how Miyamoto told Retro to change Metroid Prime to first person because the third person development wasn't going to well.

In contrast, how would Max Payne, Resident Evil 4, or Gears of War be in first-person? So depends on what type of experience the game is bringing.

Also, first person view gives the feeling like you're really there. Why do you think the Army used FPSs to train?

Also, it's not really laziness at all. There are games where you can switch between view points so I don't think it's a coding or laziness.

Ok you're right I'm wrong. A FPS is vastly vastly different to a TPS and is extremely easy to develop for comparably. Those developers at Bethesda must be the best developers in the world considering they fit two complete versions of Oblivion onto one DVD-9. You know all you needed to do was push a button to switch from third person to first person right?

But seroiously I see what you're saying. Basically they are exactly the same game except for a few graphics. But remember you only have to draw the graphics once for both versions so basically it's exactly the same amount of work.

they are to completely different types of games, its not just the the camera angle that's different, the whole game is designed for the player playing the game from that camera angle. and its stupid to say 3rd person > 1st person, the camera angle has NEVER being the reason for me not liking a game.

It's exactly the same game it only provides a different experience from the view of the end user.

Blob 1 shoots blob 2 with bullet shaped bloblet''s using a small gun shaped blobthing. blob 2 dies. Blob 1 cheer and goes after blob 3.

That's the way a 3D engine works.

They're both shooters to me, as a general rule in TPS the action looks better, but in FPS it feels better. Tho games like Max Payne and Freedom Fighters have very fluent and controllable action, but having your character visible creates some unrealistic advantages(looking around corners) and some cons(covers part of the screen).

Scratch Resident Evil 4, and i'd say you are about right.

I guess GeOW and Lost Planet are also quite good though.
