Poll Are hybrid consoles the future? (94 votes)
Not being tied down to a single viewing device, being able to take the device on the go. The switch has changed the way I've viewed gaming.
Whats say you, you?

naw, they would become over saturated if everyone tried to do it and would go against what the others a pushing for in terms of power. Nintendo can get away with it because they dont focus on the high power
Console manufacturers shouldn't focus on higher power in general, Nintendo gets this and its why their games are of higher quality, they understand their limits and instead of trying to break it they do the best they can with it. MS and Sony instead focus on pushing pixels, and as a result their games run at 30fps (or lower even) because they like to pretend their consoles can do things high end PCs can.
@AzatiS:
Do they ship with everything needed to be a dedicated device?
You gave the generic definition of a console : an electronic system that connects to a display (as a TV) and is used to play video games.
Now does it matter if my PC ship with a monitor when i already have one or my mobile with a specific cable for TV connectivity to be considered a console ? This is a ship issue now ? Hmm, weird. I thought my PC and my mobile phone can be called consoles with the above definition. So are not consoles because they didnt ship with a monitor and a cable or whatever for display connectivity ? Hmm. Weird stuff.
I feel mobile gaming is viable like Nintendos switch plus all the other platforms they have had, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Advance SP, Gameboy advance, etc but for games like WoW, Dota, PUBG, and any other high rendering game I don't see people casually playing those on the go. Atleast not until transportation becomes fully automated.

The only reason you are saying this is because Nintendo always goes low end and you have to defend Nintendo like the stupid sheep that you are.
A console manufacturer has 2 primary jobs to do.
1. Make a console as strong as possible, as cheap as possible and as easy as possible to programm for.
2. Have a variety of first and third party games to offer.
Everything else is secondary.
Also lol at the 30fps remark, as if nintendofanboys did not shill Zelda (any zelda actually) which often dropped below 30fps this whole year.
Nintendo never did two times the exact same thing with their home consol. So I doubt we will see another consol like the Switch unless Sony and Microsoft do that too and I doubt they will unless they push digital only game ( like boh tried so hard and failed : remember the PSP Go or even the X1 ) because for them to make cartridges will be a blashemy.

To be fair I dont even think there is a legit definition for a game console. Bottom line is the switch connects to a TV effortlessly, and operates differently than when in portable mode. When docked it does not use a mobile battery.
I thought Nintendo stated "a console you can take with you."

Switch cant connect to a TV, it needs an external device called Dock that is not part of Switch itself to begin with in order to connect to a TV. But lets not get into specifics like that, it doesnt matter what i say in the end of the day.
Thats the problem right there. Nintendo stated --- sheep follow. And its not Nintendo thing, is a general thing when it comes to marketing. " A console you can take with you lol. A handheld you can hook up on a TV more likely but that wouldnt have the impact marketing wise therefore the console and 2 in 1 BS works better.. But hey. Think as you want. Lets agree that we disagree on this and move on.
For Japan, yes. They won't accept them any other way if we're looking at how well the Switch is doing. Every place else? I don't think so.
I'm curious why people think the answer is no. We aren't talking next year (I assume). Hardware is constantly miniaturizing, and with the rise of high capacity flash storage, better battery tech and energy consumption, digital distribution, and now streaming from high-powered compute systems, the need for large hardware to deliver a high end experience is shrinking.
If that's the case, I'd still go with a MS Windows device so long as I can connect external accessories to it like a mouse and mini keyboard.
I don't game while traveling. I game while resting during travel. That usually means a motel/hotel room.

From my personal experience I never had a Zelda game drop below 30fps, I haven't played Breath of The Wild yet though so i might be proven wrong, but yeah while the games do run at 30fps they do compensate for the art style and gameplay, playing Twilight Princess in 30fps didn't bother me as much as playing Assassins Creed 2 in 30fps, because nintendo just did the programming better, because they don't focus too much on pixels they divert their resources into creativity and make their games far more refined than any PS or Xbox exclusive,
But if thats not a good enough explanation for you, I can bypass this by pointing out that Zelda is the exception, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze runs at 60fps, Mario Kart 8 is at 60fps, Mario games in general are at 60fps, a LOT of their games are at 60fps, the MAJORITY of their games are at 60fps, can you say the same about the PS4 or Xbox ONE?
I agree its a great idea to make a console as strong as possible, my issue isn't with the consoles themselves per say, my issue is that Sony, MS and 3rd party developers in general just seem to care more about pixel count than the quality of their games, the PS4 Pro and Xbox ONE X are out now and those machines are PERFECT for 1080p and 60fps gaming no matter what game, but no they are advertised as 4k systems (that mostly don't even do native 4k), in that scenario it doesn't matter how many games you have, most will run like shit because again they like to pretend their systems can keep up with high end gaming PCs when they are FAAAAAAR from it, Nintendo may have significantly fewer games but for what they lack in numbers they compensate for quality, giving their console value, especially for a PC gamer myself, I can play most games that are on Xbox ONE and PS4 and more at significantly better performance, I feel sorry for exclusive titles because they are forever confined to a machine that, again, thinks it can do what a high end PC can.
I would say that once CPUs are able to be shrunk down small enough where the vast majority of the processing power we need for any real application can be mobile, every type of computer we use, desktop to game console, is gonna be shrunk down to as small as it can be. I can forsee a future where we just plug in our one-size-fits-all personal computing devices into various docks that expand user input and video output.
In the meantime I don't think the next round of Sony or Microsoft consoles will be hybrids. The PS4/Xbox One are selling well enough. We're still nowhere near where a mobile device can really emulate the experiences you can get with dedicated hardware. There's always going to be a market for top end graphics out there.

I agree that 4K is a nonsense ( my opinion ). It gives you a crispy image and clarity no doubt but .. thats it ? So many resources going for pixel counting and stupid things instead of higher quality in games themselves like graphics, physics .. everything actually.
I would prefer 1080p/60fps games that would provide amazing and detailed textures, epic depth of field and push lighting and shadows to the limit etc ... than use this power ... to make a game run BAD or decent at best at 4K ... Because lets face it, even high end PCs having problems to run at 60fps in alot of games and because of this 4K developers are not pushing graphics to the limits because games would have been unplayable at 4K and they dont want that since there are alot of 4K gamers out there already.
As for consoles 4K consoles is a bad joke.
Personally im gaming still on 1080p and pushing graphics to the max. As i predicted and said a year ago, we have a long way to go for true 4K gaming and top notch VR. Seems i was right, again. Maybe with next-gen consoles or new era of PC hardware things will get better. Its sad for pushing pixels instead of games performances.
@AzatiS: I'm in the same boat. Granted, I am sure 4K looks terrific, but I am happy as long as the framerate is 60fps, even though I know my PC could do 4K. I wouldn't want to sacrifice frames for resolution.

I agree, thats why im still gaming at 1080p but im not talking only about frames vs resolution. Im talking about games qualities in technical level like textures, lighting, shadows etc. Developers taking into consideration 4K trend and they are not pushing really hard as they would if 1080p was the trend instead. They want their games to run at 4K with current hardware ...
Crysis for example didnt wow us because of its resolution if you get what i mean but because of its in game qualities, technical level speaking. We wont see that again imho anytime soon with this resolution nonsense. 8K next ? beeeh
