Yesterday the Halo Championship Series was highly viewed on Twitch and even hit the number 2 spot during the finals only behind League of Legends. Right now, Killer Instinct is 6th on Twitch despite being over 2 years old

Why is it that Sony games are practically non existent in the E sports scene? Instead having to rely on games like COD and soon Street Fighter V, is Sony doomed to being irrelevant in E sports?

both PlayStation and Xbox are irrelevant beside the fighting games. Esport is PC domain.

@lostrib: Those nerds are not athletes so I agree with her. E-sports is a joke to be called a sport. Look at what the average pro gamer looks like...a physically sub-par male.

Not saying the competition should not exists because it's a positive thing, but videogames are not sports.

So an "athlete" of a niche sport where competition is sort of a joke to begin with gets butthurt, I'd say Halo did good.

@StrongBlackVine what about chess players? That's an Olympic sport btw

Only 30k viewers during the finals of a championship is anything but impressive. That's like the viewership for some popular streamer simply streaming some random game. PC e-sports easily break 50k even for relatively minor and preliminary competitions, the more popular games' championships (i.e. LOL, DOTA2, CSGO, Hearthstone) tend to break 100k.

Heck, 30k is even weaker than Bob Ross off-peak.

Console e-sports is a joke.

E-sports are sports in the competitive sense and if things like chess can count then I don't see why video games can't, according to SportsAccord ("umbrella organisation for all (Olympic and non-Olympic) international sports federations", from Wikipedia).

However, one element in the definition stuck out to me, and that's that games can't rely on luck. Well, in some ways I question what they mean by this. I'm wondering where coin-flipping comes in. And where in video games does anything random effect the spirit of fair competition. Can things like poker be considered sports even though randomness is much a consideration but strategy is still at play in many ways? For that matter, games like Magic the Gathering? And in video games there are elements of randomness to certain things like when you shoot how inaccurate the shots might be, sometimes you can limit the degree of randomness in certain games, decrease inaccuracies by crouching to limit bloom, you never have a final say of chance but you can limit risk sometimes.

Anyhow, I just bring that up, because even though they might accept games can be sports there might be a limit by those rules as to which games can count.

It actually broke 40K(41K including other halo 5 streams and not the main halo twitch channel stream)near the end of the final match in the event. The winners of the event got $15000 and a gold medal, but the event did not really affect the Halo WC's standing. The big Halo WC's final in March will probably break the 50K mark easily. It's a pretty decent number for an event that is not that major for a console exclusive.

We're referred to as cyber athlete's by the way, also you're the joke. You're not even a competitive gamer in any capacity and I'll bet you fit the "physically sub-par male" designation you so choose to impose on others because of what they do.

Why is competitive gaming not a sport? It's very mentally intensive, it requires amazing talent, deep knowledge of the metagame, experience, dedication, practice, dexterity, consistency, reaction speed, muscle memory, ability to communicate, situational awareness and reaction, game sense and so on and so forth. You not considering competitive gaming a sport means less than nothing, because you yourself and your opinion on it mean less than nothing.

You are the definition of salt, and someone who can't get with the times.

And your point is what?

My body isn't sub-par. I work out 6 days a week and eat healthy, only drink socially and don't smoke.

My point is these dorky looking guys are not athletes and it is an insult to real athletes to even try to put them in the same class.

Gaming is as much as of a sport as a spelling bee contest.

The competition is fine and think it's great that some people can make a living doing something they enjoy like playing games, but it's not a damn sport.

How is it an insult? I know why, because you don't understand it, it's really that simple. Someone as rudimentary and ignorant as you cannot for a second understand what must be done to be a competitive gamer.

It's a full time job, it's one of the reasons I don't compete anymore, I do not have the time to practice like I did when I was younger, it requires all of the extra time you have available and more. It requires the same mental dedication that physical athlete's put into their sports, your life has to take a complete back seat to it if you want to go somewhere with it, your problem is you're trying to downplay it for being a primarily mental sport rather than physical, and that is your problem.

You're closed minded, extremely closed minded and can't get over your preconceived notion of what a sport is. You're likely horrible at any form of competition derived video games and don't have the ability to compete, thus you cannot respect what it takes to accomplish what these people do.

P.S. I greatly doubt your diet, workout routine, physical attributes etc.

So far, yeah. PC usually dominates eSports, but Xbox with Halo and Killer Instinct, and Nintendo with Smash, Splatoon, and Pokemon, also seem to have some inroads with the market. PlayStation doesn't really have any at the moment.

@StrongBlackVine: You eat healthy but you are as dense as they come. So by your definition Chess isn't a sport either and those dorky looking chess players are insult to other athletes?

Before you start with your drivel:

It is worth reminding ourselves why the International Olympic Committee and over 100 countries recognise chess as a sport.

I think the IOC holds much more credibility than a random poster on GS.

@nyadc: And why should I care what some e-sports enthusiast that probably looks like shit thinks about my personal fitness? I like to talk about games but I get the impression you are a complete dork with stereotypical looks and lack of social skills. Your little man cave screams it.I have lots of doubts about things you say, but I don't care to question you. If this was bodybuilding.com it might be relevant, but we're not there.

You sound like a real piece of work, the way you're outwardly attacking peoples appearances leads me to believe you have one hell of a complex and serious insecurities about your own physical appearance, undoubtedly made fun of for it growing up. If I had to take a shot in the dark, just from the way you're talking you're likely THE unattractive person here and try to overcompensate for it and put people down to feel better about yourself.

My man cave screams that I love my hobby and take pride in what I own, you can try to warp that into some delusional context surrounding my social skills and appearance but I don't really care, you're petty, moronic, pathetic and frankly you're acting like a little twit right now.

So you don't think motor sports are a sport then? You're tying physical athleticism into sport as your argument, it's not so cut and dry.

Yes Motorsports are an exception to that statement. Although they are sitting down they definitely are not stationary and risk of injury is high.

So what you're saying is that you get to set the standards and definitions of what is and is not a sport? You're sitting down and not stationary when you're gaming, so because racing has a risk of injury it qualifies as a sport yet competitive gaming does not? There's absolutely no continuity to anything you're saying.

You must think that competitive gaming is easy or something, I really hope that is not the case because you would be sorely, sorely mistaken..

No, the definition is pretty clear. You're the one trying to change the definition of a word. Sports require physical skill and exertion. Is working all day at a computer a sport? because thats the same level of physical exertion that competitive gaming requires.

No one is saying that competitive gaming is easy, its just not a sport because it doesn't require the physical skill or conditioning that real sports require.

@nyadc: Leave him. You're not going to get any constructive arguments from him. I guess anything that has risk of injury is sport. Good to know that my job as a Civil Engineer is in fact a Sport (i.e. I'm not stationary and risk of injury is well ... there can be fatal accidents)!

@nyadc: Leave him. You're not going to get any constructive arguments from him. I guess anything that has risk of injury is sport. Good to know that my job as a Civil Engineer is in fact a Sport (i.e. I'm not stationary and risk of injury is well ... there can be fatal accidents)!

sportspɔːt/noun

  1. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Where about's does "Civil Engineer" fall under entertainment because it sure as hell doesn't.
