i've been a gamer for a long, long time and this generation seemed to have a lot of promise early on, but now more than ever it really just feels like been there done that... it seems like they're going to have to step it up a lot to keep gamers interested... vr could be nice.

Nope. Even after playing Crysis 3 maxed out on PC, I am still finding Tomb Raider on PC absolutely beautiful. I've found myself even saying "Wow!" a few times thus far.

Yeah, Tomb Raider looks pretty awesome. Too bad tesselation crashes Nvidia cards. It keeps crashing mine. I might just have to bite the bullet and turn it off.

Yea I had to on my gtx670s. It seems lately AMD and Nvidia have swapped places. With both PS3 using AMD and supposedly the next Xbox, I may have to switch back to AMD next upgrade.

Metro LL will be beautiful. It already looks great watching a damn YT video. Bioshock looks amazing too, even from a technically standpoint. Even if it is using UE3.989899898(w/e you want to call it.)

That happened to me like 8 years ago. I think Far Cry was the last game that blew me away with graphics alone. I appreciate artstyle and clean looks, but graphics aren't a selling point to me anymore.

I wouldn't say that. I would say that the port obviously hasn't been tested and fixed thoroughly, though.

Graphics were never and still aren't that important to me in a game, but damn have they come a long way.  I still get impressed by even what most people would consider ugly. The advancements yet to be made are indeed impressive.

But I'll always prefer 16 bit or sprites to anything released today. :P

I always think I am and then recently I played Sleeping Dogs maxed out and it was certainly impressive.

Doesn't stop me from enjoying titles like Hotline Miami or To The Moon but I know when to appreciate good technical graphics.

I think we're definitely hitting diminishing returns with high end graphics, it seems it takes a huge step up in hardware for fairly minimal visual gains. there is a bigger technological gap between current gen consoles and top of the line PC hardware than there was between previous gen and current gen consoles, but all that extra horsepower is just running the same games with higher frame rates, higher resolutions and better lighting. The PC versions obviously look better, but it's hardly the generational gap the difference in hardware spec would suggest.

There is a limit to how much increased polygon counts, higher res textures and effects can really add to a game at this point, the kind of graphical leap seen between previous gens just isn't possible any more. To me the next real improvement in graphics will come more in animation than in sharper, smoother games. We have already seen a big improvement in things like particle effects, facial animation and performance capture and we are starting to see more dynamic cloth and hair animation. The TressFX software used in Tomb Raider is obviously pretty raw at the moment and very demanding of hardware but there is definite potential there.

The point of great graphics (other than bragging rights on system wars) is to improve immersion, to make the characters and environments in games feel more real. You can only go so far with texturing a highly detailed but rigid model, we are at the point now where character models are close to photo-realistic in stills but look every bit the video game avatar in motion, the next step in creating immersive worlds is for the characters and materials within that world to move and act like those in the real world.

Nope, after several hours of playing Crysis 3 still impresses me in so many ways. I thought I would get used to its graphics by now but I didn't.

And there are smaller things, effects or details in older games too that still impress me. Lots of 2D games still look great IMO.

I wouldn't say I'm desensitized to them. Deep Down, Killzone 4, and Knack looked prey damn impressive to me graphically speaking. Bu I have been able o differeniate between and seperate "art-style" from "graphical fidelity", and concern myself more with other aspects such as art-style or sound design over graphical fidelity.

It was easy to amaze us with graphics when 3D started, because lets face it most 3D games looked hideous back then. These days the visuals are so polished that it takes a huge leap in power to make a small step up in graphics.

Nevertheless though Im pretty sure PS4 will show us some graphcis that shall amaze us.

Well I suggest going back and playing some older titles, when you play the newer ones you will appreciate the graphics again.

The problem i have is i haven't got enough money to truly put into pc gaming i have an ok rig for playing games but nothing major what will show me the cream of the crop, so i stick with the ps3 for the good graphics and i must admit i am a little bit looking at games coming out thinking they aren't the best graphics compared to some older games, and i am a person who grew up playing the amiga 500 and played alot on a commadore 64,

i think my greatest game i used to love playing when i was a kid was hook on the aimga, and also a detective game where you was on a cruise ship and someone had been murdered and you had to go round finding out clues and everytime you found something out the time would move on. was brilliant at the time lol,

Nothing really wow's me anymore. i think the only thing what would wow me now is playing a game with cgi graphics throughout, and i'm hoping for the day in sport games that the shirts ripple in the wind and are actually hanging off the character more than being the character. and i think i may be wowed when i see a ps4 wrestling game. will soon see. that tech demo they showed was amazing but that was a cut scene so who knows what the actual gameplay will look like

I have gotten to the point where good visuals without impact is just bullocks to me. For all Crysis amazing visuals, it does not impact my impression of the game, in comparison, when i played Uncharted however, i actually felt like the vistaz were adding to the experience of discovering Shangri La. The same with the new Lara Croft and that HAIR tech, thats something very impressive that adds to the character as a whole, same with Far Cry 3

we are still far away from CGI graphics and we need way more destructible environments. I'm tired that on FPS when you shoot a bazooka everybody blows up but the environments stay exactly the same.

I'll let you know when my console can produce graphics without jaggies, 1080p resolution, 60+ FPS, incredible physics (that don't include scripted scenes), and high res (not blurry/bloom) textures.

I dont see anyone making CGI avatar quality games. Imagine the development cost and how much of our life we would have to wait lol. Graphics are hitting the wall this coming gen. I just want good gameplay, graphics are already more than good. I want good clan matches on KZ SF and not play horrible games like Crysis 3.

Games are defintely still becoming amazing looking, but in my honest opinion i don't think the jump from PS3 to PS4 (at least what we've seen so far as CONFIRMED gameplay) is nearly as big as the jump form PS2 to PS3

still none the less....crysis 3 on ultra looks fantastic...but i could easily play it on medium to high settings and not give a crap

I played Deus Ex for the first time in 2006...6 years after it first came out and it still managed to become my favorite game of all time despite how it looked

I'll put it like this: without meaningful/deep gameplay even jaw-dropping graphics will hold my attention for a single playthrough.

Hell, maybe not even then. I downloaded the GoW: Ascension demo yesterday. Played through it once then deleted it. My mild hopes for GoW are now in the toilet. I was so disgusted at the lack of depth and samey-ness. If you're not going to offer anything new I'll leave it to the casuals.

Seen over 75% of all current gen titles only through youtube. Every high fidelity PC title (EVER) I have seen played on a good PC . . . only through the scope of youtube.

. . . Needless to say, I have become desensitized to the low res blocky compression tech of youtube videos (which happen to play games with good graphics on a native console/PC).

Than Sony announce a new console this year? Better graphics? No need to only experience these things through YT? ~throws wallet~

Yep. Happened to me a long time ago since the PS2/GC/Xbox era.

Hell might have happened further back than that. I just never really cared for graphical improvements. At all. Not even a thing to me.
