Poll Are you disappointed in this gen because graphics aren't on par or the games just aren't that great? (94 votes)

Graphics are everything! Games are not fun with no native 1080p 60FPS 3%
Disappointed with the games, due to too many remasters, not enough new IP's 38%
I enjoyed my first party offerings, Sony and Nintendo satisfied my needs 13%
PC MASTER RACE!!!! 32%
VR Will save this gen and will be the highlight in Gen 9 2%
I'm getting a Scorpio! 12%

I just want to know what System Wars really think of Gen 8, as it seems we are already getting close to Gen with the NX and Xbox Scorpio.

This gen has been a huge drag, not only game graphics aren't as mind blowing like last gen (except for the GOAT, Witcher 3). But also there hasn't really been a lot of stellar titles that would be remembered this gen other than a few indie games and the GOAT Witcher 3.

What do you really think of this gen?

Games, I get bored easily nowadays and I don't think that happened as much last gen. I didn't get any of the new consoles until past October because the only difference I saw from previous gen was minimal. We get so many great indies but it seems gamers want new AAA ips and look past those great indies.

The only disappointment for me this gen are the remasters they're everywhere, and there's more on the horizon.

I don't mind if these games are from 2 or more gens ago, but from last gen is just a quick cash grab by everyone who does it because there is little to no work to be done, because the graphics are not a lot better than they were last gen.

If it's games from Xbox/PS2 then sure I can see them as remasters as they would really have to put some effort into them, and when they do remaster games from that era, well they try and charge you to rent them.

As for the games that are not remasters, well I've enjoyed them for the most part, but hey each to their own :)

I'm not even disappointed really.

The graphics jump from one gen to the next is always getting smaller and smaller, so it's not like I was expecting some huge leap this time, there is no magic behind this stuff.

Games? Yeah, the top tier "Holy Shit!" games aren't as common as they used to be, but the sheer amount of good games is at an all time high. I'm never running out of good shit to play.

lol @ TW3. If that's what you consider this gens best offering then I actually feel bad for you.

I don't really have a problem with the graphics... in fact, I think there's too much emphasis on them this gen.

But great games have been few and far between this gen... although we have had some great ones and more coming on the horizon, so overall I'm pretty satisfied.

I'm not disappointed at all, this truly feels like the golden age of gaming for me (been gaming since early 80's) as I can get games cheaper than I have ever been able too, also more games in Indies, AAA games, lots of sales all the time, generation defining experiences like Tw3, we have more choice in systems and every system has great games and lots of them. I've never been so spoilt.

I actually enjoy this generation reasonably enough. I'd say it's a step down from Gens 6 and 7, sure, but I've not been actively disappointed by it or anything.

Games.

All the eye candy in the world wont make a crap game less crap. There has been way too much focus on trying to push graphics over gameplay this gen.

Im sick of the last 5 or 6 years being about making games "digital narrative entertainment" as some Activision, Ubisoft, or EA head would say. I want games to be fun, first and foremost, and it seems like more and more, devs seem to only care about the word cinematic, rather than making stuff fun.

Nintendo has shown us that games don't need uber level graphics to be great. I've been playing more Xenoblade Chronicles X and damn, the game is beautiful just the way it is. Mario Kart 8 is another example. Nintendo is proof that developers don't need to compromise gameplay and player interactivity in the name of quality. The more games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Inside, Rocket League and Doom I play, the more obvious it becomes that games like Uncharted 4 are criminally overrated.

I was never really interested in offerings from developers under the reign of the handful of publishers that make up the "AAA" console gaming space because they usually never share my interests, but this particular generation has really shown how ridiculously barren of variety and creativity that AAA market can be.

At least i did play a few games that i ended up thinking were fantastic during the 7th generation. I've barely been interested in a handful of titles on the Playstation 4/Xbone, and even at that, that interest wasn't even close enough for me to purchase a console.

Nintendo is doing their own thing, and they're the only one close enough. I may end up getting NX depending on their launch lineup.

Not enough new games on consoles this gen. Plenty on pc which is nice. If theu get rid of backwards compatibility issues then this wouldn't be a problem. Moving forward hopefully all current gen games will be playable on future consoles for years. Somehow i still doubt Microsoft or sony will figure this out.

No i'm not disappointed. If you're only factoring in triple A titles then you're in for a disappointment ....but on PC, there are just too many great titles to play , more than ever.

The games, while there is a shit load of good games this gen, not enough great stuff. Also not enough new stuff from the triple A side. The indie stuff is rad, but they mostly deliver on the 2d and isometric front. The 3d side of gaming is stagnant as ****.

"PC Master Race".

On serious note: I don't care much about graphics. Sure it's always fun to look at better graphics whenever a new game comes out and it's also fun to use it as a fuel in System Wars for lulz but I am disappointed in modern AAA industry because most games lack strong focus/direction and try to please everyone, ending up being something with a lot of half baked features.

Luckily, Mid Tier industry is rising and giving me experiences that were lacking for the last couple of years. Really looking forward to System Shock, Divinity Original Sin 2 and some of the new stuff.

I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of awesome 3D blockbuster games. Some of my favourite devs like Rockstar and Bioware haven't actually made an 8th gen game, just cross gen ports. And of course Nintendo have practically vacated that space. There's lots of "good" stuff, bit little enough mindblowing. Too many ports and rehashes too.

@undefined:

I really don't like how developers are starting to half ass games by only giving you a portion of it available and the rest has to be bought as DLC. All this while they still charge you full price!

No option for me in the poll, this gen has been fantastic! Reasons:

1. Graphics are great

2. Performance is alot better than in previous generations (native 1080p for most games, close to no screen tearing, lots of console games at 60fps and most 30fps ones run completly locked)

3. More diversity, mostly due to indies (the bring back old classics and new unique experiences)

4. High focus on core gaming. No motion controllers and almost no casual games

5. Nice standard features, like the ability to take screen shots, upload videos, etc

I'm not disappointed with this gen because I don't own an Xbox One. There are a few too many remasters but I can understand the ones like TLoU and NDC because a lot of lems rightfully jumped ship this gen so they didn't get to experience those games on PS3. The most suitable remasters are ones like Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 because they are half price and added the Japanese content + the spin off games were improved.

The graphics are whatever. I've been happy with how games look since the end of Gen 6, so I'm just being spoiled at this point.

If there was anything to be disappointed in, it's the games. We have a lot releasing, and those are pretty quality games when all is said and done, but it's all sort of a wash. On the indie side, everything is starting to look the same or play similarly with one 'gimmick' that helps it out. On the studio side, few risks are being taken so we're getting less and less innovative, unique titles. So while I don't have a shortage of things to play, I'm left shrugging at many games that I'm amazed by this gen.

I am enjoying the generation though.

You guys who are lamenting on how games are becoming more boring do realize it's happening because games are the same thing they were three generations ago right?

Stop buying games that only offer different paint. There is a world of amazing games to be played, and only a select few come from the bigger developers. .

@jg4xchamp: maybe because every GD game is 3d perspective. Somehow, 30+ years after I started gaming, it has become UNCOOL to offer different perspectives to the gamer. It's lame to break the mold...

Today's kids want graphics (nothing new) and paint by number video games with big marketing budgets so they can feel like their getting the next hot game. Only to find out they've already played that game a dozen times.

I'm getting to the point to where I don't finish most games that I buy. It is getting out of hand. It boils down to a number of things.

1. Games can be too long. Shocking I know, but it's true. Every game does not have to be 100 long. I just need a well made game that is engaging.

2. They are buggy and or broken on release. Their patches exceed what should be permitted. The Handsome Collection is a perfect example with a 30GB+ day one patch. How is that ok by any standard?

3. Games are released unfinished with entire portions removed due to time constraints (MSV).

4. Franchise fatigue is a real issue and new IP's are a necessity. It's the main reason I tend to shun Nintendo as of late.

I don't care about graphic fidelity that much. If the game is decent looking that it is fine with me. Furi is pretty. It looks simple and clean. I don't need a hyper realistic presentation for games to be fun and engaging. Honestly, story, character development, music, and tone matter to be much more. I engage in more retro stuff due to the things listed above. They are simple and just more fun to play in general. Gonna play me some Sunset Riders with a friend today.....OOOOHH YEAH!

Wouldn't be so bad if remasters weren't games not even 5 year old with little difference beyond a resolution change.

Some older titles like Resident Evil: OutBreak I'd love to see appear on steam.

my only disappointment thus far is Persona 5 keeps getting kicked down the road

there is certainly a lacking in quality of titles mostly onset by the competitiveness of last gen, companies went bankrupt competing against each other last gen trying to race to create the next new big IPs, and many devs made great games nobody bought, sent them and their publishers packing, those companies that survived to make games this gen weren't left in the best shape either, we saw so many companies close their doors last gen it's ridiculous

this gen, there's a lot of great games but yes I do feel compared to last gen that magic just isn't there, I don't blame them though, like I said the developers and publishers that survived didn't come out last gen without suffering for it, the indie game scene this gen is utter garbage compared to last gen, and last gen was like a indie golden age

I've enjoyed the games I've played this gen. If you had shown me Doom 4 in 1998 my head would have exploded. The bar is raised ever higher for devs, and I think they do a good job of stepping up.

Disappointed with PC wanna be culture. XboxOne and PS4 can accomplish so much more if they dont push for 1080p and 60fps. But no, the scream around those numbers and sacrifice graphics along with it.

Shooting for 60 frames is admirable and devs should be encouraged to do it. It should honestly be a standard at this point. It has a direct positive effect on gameplay.

And that's not some PC wannabe thing either. Console games as far back as the NES were usually on a 60 frames standard, it wasn't until early 3d games in gen 5 that those sacrifices had to be made. Luckily in gen 6 many devs brought us back to that standard, but then the bottom fell out in gens 7 and 8 because these devs are trying to pull off resolutions that these machines aren't easily capable of.

And yeah, agreed on resolutions (I know we've had this discussion before). Having a higher resolution is nice, but it shouldn't come at the expense of more important aspects.

All I asked for this gen was 1080p/60fps. I thought that would just be a given considering last gen the norm was 720p/20-30 fps.

The game drought has been far too real with the dying off of many AA devs. Now it's just AAA devs and indies.

Not disappointed at all. I've played plenty of good games, and good amount that were great, and on a consistent basis.

Baffles me how people have trouble finding good games this gen, or any gen for that matter.

I for own have been enjoying this gen, one of the best gen in gaming that I've had and I've been gaming since the Atari days. My biggest disappointments have been the unnecessary remastered like sleeping dogs, God of War and others that no one was asking for but they feel to make anyways but I didn't buy any of those so it doesn't affect me but these companies could have been working on current generation games rather than those. Also, the sickening over emphasis of graphics over actual gameplay, yeah it's nice to see a beautiful game but that will never trump gameplay in my book. I rather play a game with good graphics but fun, enjoyable and amazing gameplay than a game with amazing graphics but a bland and boring story and gameplay. The whole back and forth bickering and arguing of graphics has been the main black eye on this gen but for me, I don't listen or let it affect the enjoyment I've been having with the games. Witcher, Bloodborne. Paragon, Smite, QB, Sunset,Halo are amazing games and have enjoyed every minute and can't wait for the new games this gen to be released.

Sidenote, I didn't participate in your poll cause none of these choices I agree with.

Were is the option for "I'm happy with the games and enjoy the multiplats". The bitching about graphics is the hardest thing for me to get. I remember saying to myself when the Dreamcast came out that graphics would never need to improve from this point on. More new IP's would be great though. Of course when something new is tried such as No Man's Sky or many of the other indies, people are tripping over each other to talk shit about them. It's no wonder we get so much more of the same. Remakes and sequels.

Graphically, I think games like Witcher III and Street Fighter V look great, but I play old games all of the time, so it was never a big priority for me. As for the amount of good titles available, those games, along with a mix of indies, have kept me pretty satisfied even though there isn't anything out there that I'd call revolutionary. After last gen, I've tempered my expectations, so I was never expecting anything mind blowing from gen 8 to begin with.

I'm mostly disappointed in the exclusives. And 30 fps is also a big drawback, makes the gameplay less precise and less responsive and the graphics jitter during fast movements.

Very few reasons to get a next-gen console when you have a gaming pc which will give you a much better experience.

I am a PC gamer so if the question is just for consoles take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I don't think we get less games or of a lower quality than last gen. If you are an RPG player this is a golden age. I have so many games that I want to play not enough time to, that I haven't even touched Dark Souls 3 for example. It's true, PC has more releases that consoles but still, lots of great games have found their way to console as well. Maybe people aren't looking hard enough. For example, have all the RPG fans here played Divinity: Original Sin?

As for remasters, I get that there is some frustration for the people who have played them already. However for those who haven't they are a nice opportunity to enjoy some of the best games of the past generation in even better graphics. Those PS4 owners for example who didn't own a PS3 last gen, why wouldn't they want to play The Last of Us or The Uncharted Trilogy? On PC I play games 5, 10, 20 years old. I wouldn't mind playing older games on my console that I didn't have the chance to in the past.

As a PC owner I buy consoles for their exclusives. I have a PS2, PS3, PSP, DS, 3DS, PS Vita. It's true that neither PS4 or Xbox One have yet made a compelling case for me to get one but that's mostly cause I have too many games I want to play on the PC. If I only had a console, I don't think either the quantity or quality of games would have been such an issue for me.

I agree for the most part. Graphical jumps will be what they are. I see a difference from my PS3/360. As for the games, I'm having fun. To anyone that says "People seem to ignore indies", no I'm not. My gaming time is limited and since I bought new hardware I'd like it to be as fully utilized as possible. I haven't played many indies that couldn't have been done on the PS3/360. Ori or Resogun may not have been as pretty, but they could have easily been on last gen. Definitely Inside. I bought 2 new consoles like I do every gen. I want to play bigger games on them.

Any problems I have with current graphics would be down to developer choice, because there's plenty of power in the consoles. Except Wii U but even then, the games look great.

I don't really get the gripes with current hardware...

There are plenty of fun games this gen, although many big AAA titles tend to disappoint in the gameplay and graphics department. One big problem that is still prevalent is obvious console ports. I know you smear the game with weird effects or some goofy artstyle, but I can see your obvious low res textures and half baked lighting.

Many games disappoint graphically, but that's just common because there's so many damn console ports.

Aside from Doom, nothing so far this gen outside of Nintendo offerings has got me genuinely excited to play a game.

I'm disappointed in this gen like most on this thread. My PS4 has been collecting dust and I've been on Steam mostly.

Nintendo NX might grab my attention however.
