Are you happy with today's console graphics/performance?

I find today's consoles to be pretty good. Not like how it was during the PS3 era lol. Sure, more FPS and all that other fancy stuff is nice, but not necessarily a deal breaker. To me, a great game finds a way to shine no matter what. Consoles do offer an option to do 60fps if that's your thing. There are certain games I do prefer to play on PC like RTS for sure. Not sure how you can play that on a console lol. Company of Heroes 3 seems like a game I would upgrade my PC for. So what say you, SW? Are you happy with today's console graphics/performance?

I'm a hardcore gamer! I'm only happy when I'm nit-picking tiny insignificant details that nobody else really cares about!!

speaking of RTS. Has anyone given AOE4 a whirl? I'm digging it so far. I've also been playing a lot of New World as well.

I like the idea of more options for performance modes, but I suspect things are just gonna get worse the further we get into the gen.

I can only speak for PS5 and I haven't used it much apart from a couple of games from Capcom messing up HDR on PC but yes it's absolutely fine.

I play most games on PC though. If I had to play something on PS5 and couldn't get 60fps I wouldn't be happy at all but that hasn't happened yet.

To be fair, PS5 and Series X are decent consoles. However, they are not as good as high end PCs in terms of specs and being able to play the way I want. So, I will continue to use my PS5 for exclusives only. Thankfully MS lineup is on PC and Sony is releasing more and more games on PC. Hopefully I will be able to sell my PS5 and go PC only at some point.

I was happy with what the launch PS4 could do so yeah.

Yes, its good enough, more than good enough. PCs have gotten far to expensive these days.

Usually I'd go with a custom build when I get my new computers, but this time if I were to get a new PC, I'd hold my nose and get the pre-built. The OEM manufacturers are the only ones actually getting a steady supply of gpus from AMD and nvidia and the only ones that won't shaft you

They’re decent. A lot better than the PS360 era that’s for damn sure. Stable frame rates didn’t become a thing until last gen and 60fps this gen.

Pretty much this. People were extremely happy with the graphical improvements from 2 gens ago. Graphics haven't really been an issue in quite some time. If the game looks like crap in this day and age you blame the developer lol

For $400, yeah the PS5 is pretty good.

I'd rather not have to play games on a console though and it sucks when a game's performance is held back because it's locked to one platform. It's kinda rare that it's something I care about, but then you get shit like Bloodborne.

So in that way, no. I'm never happy with console performance, because it is something I can't improve.

Performance wise, it gets better every gen. Gone are the dark ages of Crysis 2, where a shooter can release at sub 20fps and get rave reviews and sell like hotcakes. The fact that a steady 120 fps mode on Infinite exists on the series S is kind of an amazing feat.

I'm still gaming on a base PS4 and loving it, so no complaints here.

PS4 was shit when it launched. Now it is just embarrassing at this point. 30fps gaming in 2021....

I'm not sure consoles are all that good, clearly, both of the larger manufacturers grossly mislead consumers, and seriously overstated the capabilities of their systems. Why? Well because they don't have anything else, like content, to sell that new hardware. They had to mislead people into believing the hardware itself was worth the switch.

$500 for a console, $420 for online service over the next 7 years, that's already more than a good gaming PC.

Yep. They look pretty darn good to me. Haven’t picked up an Xbox Series X or PS5 yet and I’m still enjoying plenty on the Xbox One S and Switch.

I still think consoles aren't leveraging some their strengths. Consoles are generally smaller, lighter and cheaper than PCs, so why isn't there more emphasis put on couch co-op and local LAN? PC LAN parties are great as well, but lugging your PC setup around is obviously less convenient than a console. And the amount of fun being left behind by not offering LAN options is mind boggling to me...plus the obvious lag benefits and freedom from not needing the internet.

How cool would it be to setup your own local seasons in said fps, where it tracks all games played, stats, etc, and also gives out in-game awards for top players, kills, flag scores, etc. Or maybe a new EDF where you run 20v20 (or more) bugs vs humans! I have long wanted to eat all my friends as a giant robot scorpion.

They're impressive. I've got a Series X, but still doesn't come close to the performance of my RTX 2080 PC though.

I do like how BC on Series X is more like forwards compatibility, at least on the 60fps games. That fact that it runs older games better is like how the PC does it. In all the consoles I've known for the past 30 odd years, not seen this type of upgrade before.

Only have a PC and Switch, and the Switch is weak as ****, and costs more than it should. Which I'm not happy about.

Haven't experienced the PS5 and new Xbox, so can't say. There's no way to trust people who have them either. I remember when people were playing AC on PS3 and PS4 in 20 fps and were happy with it. No one complained about it and reviewers ignored it. So who knows.

But from what I understand with PS5 and new Xbox, you do get quite a lot of power for quite a low price. Still don't know how the games perform on them though, and I think pushing for 4K and raytracing with those specs is pretty fucked up.

It's 2021 and it feels like the next gen era hasn't even started yet it's a weird time in gaming.

I am still pretty satisfied with my X1X but once the next gen only games start flowing and that for me will be Forza Motorsports 2022 built from the ground up for XSX, I had better be able to find an XSX fairly easily by then.

Craziest gen I've ever seen in all my years of gaming. :P

I think the PS5/XSX performance is fine for a cheap, baseline form of gaming. The companies themselves are where I'm not satisfied. I don't like their business tactics, their fake PR, or their walled gardens. I like my freedom to do what I want, how I want, with whatever input device I want. That's why even if consoles had the ability to be equal in power and lower in price I still would prefer PC. I would have so many options and choices taken away from me if I just went console only.

As PC gamer i would say those consoles are mighty disappointing.

If someone really cares about power and performance then they don't even bother with consoles. PC will always be top dog in that fight.

Mehh mostly game on pc and so fare PlayStation hasn’t shown any content that would make it worth to try and get one from a store…and of course with all Sony’s relevant first party coming to pc, it’s become more and more of a non issue!

Also have a switch which I haven’t turned on for more than a year so… to be fair my two infants doesn’t excactly give me a lot of time to game!

When i see games getting to 1080p and a bunch of titles running graphical settings set to Low or even lower, no lol.

In a similar vein to the comment about AI, I am quite underwhelmed with the lack of destructible environments in games. On the PS3/360 you had stuff like the Battlefield,Red Faction games, Full Auto, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Split Second and Star Wars TFU. Even Metal Gear Rising to some extent...

I was expecting to see more cool stuff like that. Outside of Battlefield I think Control is the only thing we got like that this gen, everything ... feels static nowadays

Yeah I think they're good although I'm having a lot of trouble convincing myself to buy one. I'm good with PC and Switch (and soon Steam Deck).

Games look great on PS5/XSX. Could they look better? Maybe - but most games are still cross-gen right now. Once they're all current gen, they'll look even better.

@dabear: You're wrong yet again. If these systems are having trouble running last gen ports, you gotta be delusional to think that they'll be doing better on "next gen" engines.
