I am. I'm sick of the medival style in WRPGs. They're over doing it....Fable (if you call that an RPG) Oblivion, Castlevaina, even Demon's Souls, a JRPG that's trying to be a WRPG, is over doing it.
Do you agree, SW?

there's a reason why the medieval era has so much influence, because there is so little written during the dark ages that a lot of fantasy can be derived. demon's souls is a far better game than most this gen, so your logic is largely unrealized.I am. [QUOTE="Willy105"]WRPGs? What about the rest of the RPGs?IceBlazerXMost JRPGs aren't medival. A lot of them play the same either way.

Most but not all. Fallout 3, New Vegas take place in a Post-Apocalyptic setting, Mass Effect is a Sci-fi RPG (Space Opera) Good point on Fallout. I wouldnt consider ME to be an RPG though, which is a good thing. It has some of the elements, but it has as much in common with an RPG as it does with a TPS.[QUOTE="Iantheone"]I thought all WRPGs were medieval jasonharris48
Nope its my favorite style. I mean sure have some other style but I think there is many futurstic rpg's too and I prefer medieval. Always have and always will.

I'll basically repost what I said in an earlier thread-
I'm definately sick of all the medieval fantasy settings, it's sad really. How many ****ing generic Dungeons and Dragons-inspired fantasy settings do we really need? For some reason, every sword and magic fantasy needs to take place in an england-type setting, it's practically copy and paste really.
How about someone makes some kind of fantasy adventure set in Africa or something (or any other part of the world), with it's own unique vision and creatures?
This is I was excited for Alpha Protocol (a decent game that needed more development time), since it was an rpg about espionage, rather than the same boring medieval magic stuff.
I just love swords and magic and such, which goes hand in hand with the fantasy medieval style. If they can come up with somethign else good that isnt mass effect, star wars, alien this and alien that (not a fan of aliens usually) I am for it. Maybe a more samurai like setting? Or maybe futuristic but still has swords and such. But with cool abilities and many changes. I thnk Star ocean is like this, but nowhere near as cool as whats in my head :P. Also FF XIII and even more so FF VS XIII change up the feel.
It's been done very well in the past recently with Demon's Souls, although that's from Japan. However yes, I'd like to see WRPG developers move past that style now.
f that i wish every WRPG was medieval.
I hate when my beautiful lush forests are replaced with endless shades of grey and rubble like in fallout 3.

That is how I feel. I am all for a game trying somethign new, but I have yet to see environments that make my jaw drop like a medieval fantasy setting. Look at crysis 1 then look at crysis 2 and see which looks more appealing (I know its an FPS). the beautiful trees and water and all that. Nature is awesome :P.

But there are a whole more beautiful places in the world than just medieval england. Like I said in my ealier post, how about some kind of African-set fantasy? It could be even more beautiful (and bigger in scope) than an england-inspired setting.
Further more, a futuristic rpg like Mass Effect has some beautiful settings as well, maybe even more jaw-dropping, given it's huge galatic scale (like looking out the window of the citadel space station and seeing space ships and such).
Sick of it because a few games use it? And you didn't even list more than two WRPGs
Raymundo_Manuel
A few? That's gotta be the understatement of the year.
A few games, where have you been?Sick of it because a few games use it? And you didn't even list more than two WRPGs

I'm more sick of JRPG's tendancy to make everyone look female and it's BIG IMPORTANT CUTSCENES

I suppose this gen has been swell for you then. We haven't seen many jrpgs, let alone good ones.
I'm sick of generic military shooters.Nerd_Man
God knows there are an awful lot of those too, but at least modern day shooters are relevant (i.e. they take place in our world). Medieval sword and magic games are just the same done-to-death fantasy escapism crap, and when they're a dime a dozen, it just goes to show a severe lack of imagination.
No. More RPGs need to go back to the medieval/fantasy roots that they started in.
What I'm frankly tired of is the crappy quality of recent fantasy titles(Gothic 4 screams out in my mind).

You're still using the two terms like they're sub-genres. J and W indicates the origin only.
Demon's Souls is not "a JRPG trying to be a WRPG", it's an ARPG with medieval theme that's more commonly seen with WRPGs.

But I still think JRPG's and WRPG's should be classified as different sub-genres. They are usually very distinct.

I dunno futuristic RPGs always seem to either look like one giant hospital or a giant grey pile of rubble. Gimme plains covered in grass, tree filled forests and winding rivers any day of the week. Im a sucker for exploration... and when what your exploring is a beautiful landscape... it just makes it much more appealing.

ive always assumed they were sub genres. and the J and the W indicate the origin of the genre... not the origin of the game. Thats always how everyone seems to use the terms.
I'm less bothered by 'medieval' setting than I am about generic fantasy settings. Or rather I'm bothered by seeing the same setting a dozen times. Tolkien-esque settings are terribly over used. But I don't see how Jrpgs are avoiding this issue. FF has more than it';s fair of generic sword and sorcery. Tales of Vesparia, Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery... Aside from Star Ocean there seems to be very few none-mediveal Jrpgs out there? It looks to me like it's the same problem for both sub-genres.
No, I disagree with everythng y said. I however am tired of modern shooters that are just out there to steal the thunder from the CODs and failing miserably at it.
I'm sick of so many games having the exact same take on medieval fantasy. It's a really sad take on our society that even our escapism is getting standardized and dull.

airshocker
How can they go back to their roots if they've never even left them? We need more rpgs like Mass Effect and Fallout, games which are willing to do something different other than swords and elves. Even Alpha Protocol was a whole lot more fresh than most other rpgs.
Gotta say, I laughed at that really hard, come on it's not that bad. Hollywood is tha same way, copy what sells.I'm sick of so many games having the exact same take on medieval fantasy. It's a really sad take on our society that even our escapism is getting standardized and dull.

Because usually Japanese RPG's are a different RPG sub-genre than WRPG's, that does not make JRPG's and WRPG's themselves sub-genres.
