People have no sense of what "steam punk" means.

Guess you have not played Fable III becuase it fits the definition easily.

Industrial revolution =/= steam punk.

Neither are "themes."

oh, did I see a monorail, robots, advanced mining equipment in my game....elements of steam punk. Lets look at the definition... "Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used-usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain-that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history." -wikipedia Fable III easily fits this definition.

As long as it's good, I don't care. I like armor, swords, shields and magic. :D Fable was crap, oblivion was crap, but at least we get good medieval rpg's like Risen, Gothic, The Witcher, etc.

I think those that play WRPG's only on console have such a small pool of games to pull from. Yes WRPG's do use fantasy settings a lot but PC gamers have had Arcanum, Freedom Force 1 & 2, ME 1 and 2, KOTOR 1 and 2, Vampire the Masquerade Redemption/Bloodlines, Fallout 1,2 3, Tactics and New Vegas to break things up a bit. Divinity 2 has large airships and flying fortresses that also are a switch from the norm but that is all about dragons, swords and sorcery. Would love to see a Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu or another Vampires game but that's probably won't happen.

Nope. Don't agree at all. I think we need more. Especially in the realms of Demon's Souls. What we need less of is huge spikey hair characters and over the top drama that really leads nowhere.

I would definitely like to see RPG settings other than pure DnD-like settings. I am a heavy sci-fi fan (in about any form of entertainment) and would dig more settings of such. Though I would not mind other unique settings like Wizardry 8 (never played the earlier ones) that blends fantasy and sci-fi together. That game was extremely fun for me.

I think Castlevania is even worse. a game developed by spain under the eye of kojima productions and it's not even an RPG.

I hate the idea of elves, dwarves and basically anything that goes beyond the creatures you'd find in a King Arthur story. But what are you gonna do? That's the bulk of the genre. You either get over it and still play the games or you can't and don't.

check out alpha protocol, sure it might be a rough round the edges game and have some really bad cliche's but its a breath of fresh air from the rest of the RPG's cause it was diffrent wish a company would do a game like it and do it how it should have been done.

Sega's to blame and so is obsidian partially though.

I'm okay with it, but it should have a twist to it like Elder Scrolls. No game today should have a vanilla LOTR-lite universe.

I recommend everyone to play Arcanum.

Its a RPG with the typical fantasy theme (orgres, drawves, elves etc) but its set during the industrial revolution.

I've always liked the idea of a fantasy universe in which magic existed, but it was incredibly powerful and only a few certain people could do it after making deals with the Devil or something. It's a lot less interesting when any dumb barbarian can cast a fireball.

I don't like it when it's blandly used as in Dragon Age and Oblivion. Fable at least interjects some colour and humour into its world. I quite liked Demon's Souls art design as well. Whereas normally I would lump it with Dragon Age and Oblivion I thought its dark and gothic mixture of medieval design greatly added to the games atmosphere.

yeah that. or when magic isn't merely a tool used by guys in robes to blow stuff up. like, it's a powerful energy source of sorts which allows nonsense technology (yeah, and a few people can blow stuff up with it, why not). like in blazblue. ... now that i think of it, final fantasy 7 was kinda like that... and i haven't played it yet :P

I am. I'm sick of the medival style in WRPGs. They're over doing it....Fable (if you call that an RPG) Oblivion, Castlevaina, even Demon's Souls, a JRPG that's trying to be a WRPG, is over doing it.

Do you agree, SW?

IceBlazerX

Not every WRPG has to have guns to be realistic. If you have Oblivion on the PC, there are gun mods; however, I never used them.

medieval style it's not my favorite so i stay away from the usual WRPG...WRPGs need more variety if not knighst andarmors will be to WRPGs what spiky hair and emo kids are to JRPGs..you can do so much before people get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

The older games are generally a mishmash, with things like huge sci fi towers and ships in place of an otherwise medieval setting.

The FF Franchise isn't the only JRPG franchise. AlsoFFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV,FFIX (to some extent) FFV,FFXI,FFXIV, Tactics took place in that type of setting.

I love the medieval Elder Scrolls/Dragon age type RPGs - what i tired of long ago were the WW2 shooters where most of them are so darn similar.

there is always one outcome and you play the same thing over and over.

All I know is WRPGs are much more fresh, and progressive than most if not all JRPGs. Also the only Fable game to have beenin themedieval setting is the first one.

Oh my. You have some standards.

I wonder what you thought of a game that was not GOTY with the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart doing voice acting:wink:

differenst strokes as they say.

I will disagree that Oblivion is uninspired or generic though and instead say that perhaps no game will please everyone.

personnally i like RPGs and while I also like horror and adventure games I am not a big fan of shooters but that is just me:D

I will finish by saying each to his own.

No, my favorite time period and style in games. Also, Oblivion with mods is probably one of the best gaming experiences of my life. I'm new to modding by the way and curse myself for not PC gaming my entire life.

No..Fantasy settings are fine....it's just kinda boring when the setting lacks creativity and instead is "uninspired" or "generic" like Oblivion.

Oblivion was not really generic.........each town looked way different and was each modeled after a different European style....then you have the Shivering Isles...

is this a joke? one of the most common complaints of Oblivion besides the level-scaling...was it's Copypasted Villages/Forests/Dungeons/Oblivion Gates....which is a step down From the unique and surreal world of Morrowind that oozed with lore and atmosphere.
