[QUOTE="sandbox3d"][QUOTE="SKaREO"] You must be young. You haven't accounted for inflation.SKaREO
Well youth is a relative term, but I was born in 1980. Of course there is inflation, but even so, your statement about 5 - 6 hundred bucks being "same as usual" holds absolutely no water whatsoever.
The PS3 price announcment was one of the biggest fails this gen. It sent shockwaves through the industry. Even Sony thought it was ridiculous and realized it was their worst issue with the PS3. Its why they went from all out domination to scrambling for market share. The other higher ups at Sony said that if communications with Kutaragi would have been better they would have never launched hardware at that price.
The video card in your workstation is over $700 and you think a Cell processor and a Blu-Ray drive + accessories and PSN netwwork access for life @ $500 is overpriced? You must be trolling.I never said it was. No strawmen please.
$500 was under-priced at the time. Even the $600 tag was under-priced. But developing a brand new ass backwards chipset and a high capacity storage medium (none of which truly helped the PS3) was Sonys choice. And they arrived at that choice through massive issues in management and communication. At least BR payed off in a way. They meant to use the PS3 as a trojan horse and it worked.
Even so, that is all beside the point. You are citing one of the most expensive game consoles to come out, one that the company itself considered a pricing blunder, and saying it is "the same as usual" when it is very far from it.
