You know all parents not like to buy presents for $500+, and if a console cost $1000 you can get a PC ....:?

AM-Gamer

Yet consdering console makes usually sell for a slight loss and can make things far cheaper then you can by ordering the parts for yourself a console that actually cost $1000 dollars to the consumer would be a complete monster and far beyond any pc of the same price.

It is no chance in hell they can sell a console for $1000, look at what happened to Sony and $599. It is to expensive for a "normal" console gamer, sweet-spot is around $249-299 for most people.

Hardware getting old fast, so even a $1000 console would get inferior to a PC fast.

Yep, I just bought a custom-built PC, it cost me almost 1500$ and I'm so happy with it, it's fast and powerful. It will last with me for until the next-gen of games come out. I'm also considering upgrading some of its specs. Consoles get cheap eventually, but PCs don't. I'm happy with what I've got. I have all the current-gen systems except for the Wii. However, I'm more into PC games right now.

Not in that price range it wouldn't , but I do agree there is no way in hell they woul sell it for $1000.

For the PS3, 360, and Wii, I picked each of those up on day 1, but I'll wait a while to get the WiiU, a long while to get the 720 (has to show me that it'll have more than casual Kinect crap), and maybe get the PS4 day 1. Money is not an issue as I have plenty saved up. It just comes down to which consoles can show me that they will have quality exclusives.

Console price competes against PCs, other devices, and against other consoles. The further down the price is kept from the price of a decent PC (doesn't even have to be one that runs games on Ultra settings, just has to be able to play the generation's games), the less people will hesitate to buy the console. And once you have one of the consoles name a price point, the others have to compete with that price as well.

face palm... psn+ is rental services of their choice not yours. with somethings discounts. You don't have to spend no more then a grand on a very nice pc rig. PC's do far more then a console 3: 98% of games get sold $10 cheaper right off on release Because devs/other publishers don't have to pay BIG Sony/MS a $10 fee just to be on their system. 4: steam, GMG, ect offers sales left and right, with major sales 2-3 times a month with out paying Some Fee like psn+ Don't get me wrong PSN+ is nice and microsoft and even nintendo need get with the program..

-_-! paying money to get "free" games that you can't even choose. Sure better than steam  Anyone paying more than $1000 for their gaming rigs is either an idiot or a new tech whore.

Over 2+ Million bought PS3 at 5/600 dollars. Funny lol. I wonder how the PS3 would fair if it actually PUT 1K of hardware into the machine vs 200 dollars of outdated PC hardware a blu-ray drive. Secondly, PSN+ isn't all that attractive once you realize your subscription is up. I did some math and in my 5 years of using Steam I've spend less than 650 dollars on games. And I have 122 of them, granted some of them are DLC (For Borderlands and New Vegas) but it should REALLY speak about the savings you get compared to consoles. My most expensive game there is Sleeping Dogs and I got that for 30 from Green Man Gaming and received Borderlands 2 for free from my GTX 670.

If the hardware itself is a major leap and the graphics make your jaw drop and it allows new ways to play games are you willing to spend the money and if so how much?

I hear people say they want the new consoles to launch for $300 or no buy, to me thats hillarious. If you are not willing to pay at least $500 dollars for the next consoles you need to get either a job or a new hobby. I mean honestly the PS1 launched for $300 dollars in 1994. The PS2 launched for $300 dolalrs in 2000? Why don't many gamers understand the basic laws of inflation and realize that more impressive tech cost more money and if these companys sell for $300 dollars that means one of two things. They are either losing there A$$( which none of them will do next gen) or making small profit maybe barely breaking even on something that does not cost much to make and is a very minimal upgrade from todays consoles.

I find it funny all these people buy $630 dollar I-pads every year which is a minimal upgrade and is nothing more then a large phone without the phone or a gimped laptop . Yet many gamers can't spend $500 on a hobby they supposedly love on hardware that will probably last them 5 or more years? With that said what will you pay and what are your expectation of next gen?

AM-Gamer

You seem to forget the other previaling principle of technology. It gets cheaper as it also gets exponentially more powerful. Costs of current technology drops each month as newer tech repalces it at the same cost of what the predecessor launched at. Yes the PS2 and PS1 cost the same at their launch, yet the PS2 was significantly more powerful than its predecessor. But the value of the older tech deflates, so $300 for the PS2 was cheaper than paying the same for the PS1 6 years prior.

That's the way it works. You pay relatively the same today as what older tech cost years ago, which was far less advanced. Just look at what 500 MB hard drives cost so many years ago, and what you have to spend in 2012 for HDDs with 500% more storage space. Or how about video cards, comparing the price and performance of old VOODOO models to todays Nvidia and AMD. It's only in this gen we saw an increase in the launch price over the predecessors.

So yes, we do expect more powerful tech, but not at ridiculously inflated costs just because it's more advanced than what the same costing tech was from days gone by.

-Pays for PSN+ to earn it for free

It's more expensive to pay for free games to keep them in the long run with PSN+, so...

I am willing to pay that much and MORE if the console can bring reliability coupled with strong hardware specs.

it's really hilarious when people pay $500 for a tablet or a smartphone, not to mention PCs and at the same time makes $500-$600 sounds like they are being ripped off for a multipurpose "next-gen" consoles that lasts for 5 years.

last but not least, I thought the latest statistics for the average gamer is between 25-35, if you are in your early 20s and you can't afford $500 then you should go to a shrink adn see whats wrong in your life, let alone being in the age between 25 to 35.

$500 is the price point they should be at. That should allow the graphics to be somewhere around gtx 580-680 level. That is a huge jump in graphics.

If the consoles sold for $300, they would get beat by mid level pc graphics so fast. Pc gaming would take over.

If Ms and Sony are to succeed they need to make the consoles as powerful as they can. So that they can have another long cycle.

Price tags will start at $499 for 1 controller and no games. $599 for 2 controllers + game. Same as usual. If you think it's going to be cheaper, you live under a rock perhaps? Denial? Anyway, a decent video card for a performance PC costs at least $300. Consoles are dirt cheap in comparison.

Then why does VF5 run just fine on my PS3 after it already says expired? If that was the case it would require you always have an online connection to track it and it plays just fine without it.

You might be right about the pricing. Wont argue that. Who knows? But same as usual? No. Not at all. No reason to insult the lower estimations of others when past trends actually prove you wrong.

I'll just assume you misunderstood the topic then. PS3 pricing (which was considered absolutely ridiculous by both gamers and the industry at large) does not account for "same as usual" regarding the history of console pricing across the board. Hell, it doesnt even account for Sonys typical approach. 5 - 6 hundred dollars is not "same as usual" by any stretch.

And before you go looking, I already found it for you. You're welcome.

Also blu-ray is much cheaper this time around. So they wont have to sacrifice graphics power to pay for the blu-ray drive.

Blu-ray is what drove Ps3's price up.

[QUOTE="SKaREO"] What are you talking about?SKaREO

I'll just assume you misunderstood the topic then. PS3 pricing (which was considered absolutely ridiculous by both gamers and the industry at large) does not account for "same as usual" regarding the history of console pricing across the board. Hell, it doesnt even account for Sonys typical approach. 5 - 6 hundred dollars is not "same as usual" by any stretch.

Well youth is a relative term, but I was born in 1980. Of course there is inflation, but even so, your statement about 5 - 6 hundred bucks being "same as usual" holds absolutely no water whatsoever.

The PS3 price announcment was one of the biggest fails this gen. It sent shockwaves through the industry. Even Sony thought it was ridiculous and realized it was their worst issue with the PS3. Its why they went from all out domination to scrambling for market share. The other higher ups at Sony said that if communications with Kutaragi would have been better they would have never launched hardware at that price.

The video card in your workstation is over $700 and you think a Cell processor and a Blu-Ray drive + accessories and PSN netwwork access for life @ $500 is overpriced? You must be trolling.

Every next gen should be 450-500$. You know it has some good specs at these prices vs 300$ trash with years old hardware.

I never said it was. No strawmen please.

$500 was under-priced at the time. Even the $600 tag was under-priced. But developing a brand new ass backwards chipset and a high capacity storage medium (none of which truly helped the PS3) was Sonys choice. And they arrived at that choice through massive issues in management and communication. At least BR payed off in a way. They meant to use the PS3 as a trojan horse and it worked.

Even so, that is all beside the point. You are citing one of the most expensive game consoles to come out, one that the company itself considered a pricing blunder, and saying it is "the same as usual" when it is very far from it.

well....the games are going to be there thats a given but Im not gonna settle for less than 100% leap from current gen console capabilites, I want to be blown away from a technical standpoint.

Something on par with Agni's Philosophy tech demo from there and up.

You dont rent the games , once you download PS+ game it is yours forever its not ONLIVE. Each month they have free downlaods where you get the full game for free and forever. I got Warhammer space Marine and VF5 FS for free. Thats a hell of a deal.

AM-Gamer

No PS+ = bye bye your "free" games. You know nothing.

Then why does VF5 run just fine on my PS3 after it already says expired? If that was the case it would require you always have an online connection to track it and it plays just fine without it.

How about stop lying and just accept it?

Considering the console will last at least 5 years (probably longer as this gens been 7 so far) I'd say its definitely a good investment.

If the rumours are true, they'll offer a subscription based model too. So for your people who don't want to lay down $500 at launch can play $200 or whatever and then pay a monthly fee for 2 years. Personally not for me, but a nice option I guess.

Shouldn't this question be directed at the parents of the console peasants?
