Because all I can honestly think of is Map/Inventory. The best uses of a secondary touch screen were the two zelda games on DS. (just my opinion) I don't think that would really work here because then whats the point of the TV. Well it wouldworkobviously but the TV space would be wasted. What would you guys use it for, and what mechanics do you hope game dev will use it for? Or is it really doomed to inventory/map?

Look at DS games.
Drawing symbols, indicating paths for A.I. to travel, typing, navigating menu's, notebook, lockpicking, magnifying glass, having two perspectives at once, selecting targets, voiceactivated commands, taking one part of the tv screen and placing it somewhere else, as a shield, flashlight, as a paperweight. I don't know, use your imagination.
For example in a racing game you could let it function as your hindview mirror. Or in a futuristic racer you could tune your car on the fly. Hmm you could fling items at enemies behind you/in front of you using the touch screen. Maybe flip the world with motion controls. I dunno.
Maybe a game in which you photograph stuff around you using the tablet?
What about a Zelda in which you use the tablet as your mirror shield and you can tilt it around to hit enemies in the face with sunlight.

Ever played Zack & Wiki on the Wii? The gamepad would be perfect for a sequel.

The celestrial brush in Okami also.

Drawing plays in NBA/FIFA/NFL games, redirecting routes, etc. Hot Keys for games like MMO's. Mini-games for opening doors, hacking like in Mass Effect/Bioshock Placing air strikes and care package drops on the fly without becoming momentarily vulnerable during COD multiplayer. Drawing shapes for attacks like in Okami That's just a few off the top of my head

The WiiU controller could act as a fully controllable second view point for stealth games. Being able to get a better view of your surroundings could add an extra layer of depth to such games.

Menus, inventory management, maps.

Most of while pausing the actual game;)

I'd say "but hey, I'm not a developer" but devs have'nt really shown us much worthwhile, either.

i can't really talk specifics, as it vastly varies depending on what game you want to make, but keeping it strictly single player, it has to be something that enhances gameplay, and more importantly, something that isn't intrusive. so using it for menu management on an RPG, for example, is a good implementation. of course, that's just adapting a "traditional" gaming experience to it. there are plenty of unique mechanics you could come up with that go beyond menus, UI's and gimmicky stuff like MOTION CONTROLLED BATARANG. the important thing to remember though, is that it can't be intrusive. it has to feel like an improvement, something that makes the game better, not something that gets in the way of the game.

I would think they could do something cool with killstreaks with the pad since you are kinda out of the combat for a bit when you activate bigger killstreaks. What if they used the gyro for the chopper gunner? or let you draw where you wanted the chopper to go? Or had a tank enter the battlefield and follow a route you drew?

It should be used whenever et feels like a natural choice, during game design. Developing specifically for the sake of a controller is a bad approach imo.

Lets see, only read the first page of repls, byt I think some of these may be additions.

Scanners/sensors in games, instead of having the entire screen change, you can just scan with the small screen (like in the Metroid games, would be cool to scan small things like that).

Passive Scanners, altho it allready have been mentioned for AvP

It could help make some RTS games work on consoles, have and create unit groups, that can be picked fast to be on the screen, so you would not need to waste time managing them on the main game screen.

Keep taps on partymembers and such in RPGs, (equipment health, and such, and induvidually swap things fast an efficiently, instead of spending a ton of time in the menus. And upgrades.

GPS, and or minimap in games with lots of traveling and driving.

Sifting through clues in games with riddles and puzzles.

In games with converstions like in th MGS games, the information can come in through that, instead of the main game screen.

working as spydrone view in games that has some akin to that.

Then there are the obvious: MP score list, Inventory management, and normal logs, rear window mirror, rifle scope.

I have a crap ton of cool ideas. One that jumps to mind isa scope for sniping and other down-sights applications in first person games. Including the ability to look in 360 degrees aroundyourselfwhile your onscreen perspective keeps its aim fixed where it needs to be.

It's not responsive enough for sniping.

Every single orientation feature, you mentioned sounds more bothersome, than just doing it on screen; considering you still have to focus on it.

because then you could make the sniper harder to use and take away the need to make it so one bullet doesn't kill them and nerf snipers.

Instead you chould use the combo of the gyroscope and the 2nd screen to aim and make it so that snipers are OHK the way they were ment to be but the difficulty in using them would balence their power

A detective game ala L.A.Noire without all the repetition and hand-holding..

Placed in the yr 2050-ish or so with a heavy emphasis on exploration.

mobile-touchscreen-tablet-concept.jpg

Or a high adrenaline Mech game with the Tablet acting as a FUNCTIONAL INTERACTIVE HUD ala Steel Battalion..

Steel-Battalion-Heavy-Armor-05.jpg

..just a few ideas that most likely won't come to fruition.. We'll get.. Super Mario 89: Princess Peach gives up the Peach, Zelda 37: Link's dissertation, and Metriod 45: Samus's re-diary. :(

some of these i think may already be a work in progress. first dont underestimate having things like inventory made available on that screen. i have been playing heroes of ruin on the 3DS over the last few days and its nice to be able to just poke an icon and get my items list up. beats having to press start then pick the right menu option and then get my items list. if skyrim was coming to the wiiu i would love to have the modded PC version of the UI made available on the touch screen so i can just quickly select and equip stuff. again beats paushing the game and then doing it. having all your fav items/spells made available at all times would also be very handy. in an F1 game as well as using the wiiu motion sensor for steering having the ability to quickly change your strategy and car settting on the fly would also be nice. motion control does have a bad rep from the wiimote but the wiiu is WM+ sensitive as standard. WM+ was designed to be sensitive to rotation so it should be much better. not proper steering wheel good but with a bit of practice it could still be ace. no need for a headset...the wiiu controler has a mic and speakers so i would use the telly speakers for the game sound, the wiiu controller for speech from other people and the mic for you talking. im assuming the speakers in the wiiu will be better than those of the 3DS but even with the 3DS is aint to shabby (ref..heroes of ruin). thats the basic and obvious stuff but can still be nice. i wouldnt put health/energy UI elements on the wiiu screen mind as that would make you constantly look up and down. if your playing something like F1 you only want to briefly look down at the controller and then back at the telly...what an F1 driver would do when learning to use a new wheel. something a bit more out there (multiplayer) zombiu MP: one player has the wiiu controller and has all the supplies. that player dishes out the limited supplies and other players must keep him/her safe. i would make the UI a bit more clunky on purpose so that rummaging around for stuff could take a bit of time...this would make things a bit more stressful. the other players would use wiimotes. ghost recon: the wiiu player has control of a drone that has an overview of the map. he can then advise his team mates on what to do. for local play it would be 1 wiiu controller and wiimotes. for online play everyone would use a wiiu controller and the drone pilot would be selected at random amongst teams. full voice comms support would ne needed of course. single player: okami: nuff said. fingers crosed for an okami 3. watch dogs...the screen could be used to control the city network. i dont know the full rules of the game but with a wiiu controller not only could the player control stuff in the immediate vicinity but could do so over a much wider area. a cleer use of the wiiu screen could mean you kill your target and no one has even the foggiest who did it. that may need to be balanced with some form of counter hack based on distance from the player though...other wise the game may be too easy. a stealth game like deus ex or splinter cell: if you have the required skill/equipment you could hold the controller up to a camera on the game and it would show you the camera feed on your wiiu screen. a handy way of looking around corners. similar thing for robots. itll bring up options related to the robot so you could change its FOF or maybe even take direct control temperarily and go nuts. or you shoot your own mini camera somewhere and you can see its feed on the bottom screen. in an RTS having all the build options and minimap on the touch screen would be very helpful. being able to quickly select and group different parts of your army would also be nice.

I'd either make a game that focused on the tablet or not use it at all. And even then I can't really imagine what you could do with it that wasn't just a bunch of minigame collections or those heavily scripted movie games.

Placed in the yr 2050-ish or so with a heavy emphasis on exploration.

That'd be awesome.

*pats self on back* :P

..and add Hacking terminals/doors/Cars.. with a slight Combat diviation.. and you'd have yourself a winner.

Pretty much everything that was done to the Touch Screen for the DS and 3DS.

Also probably make it into some sort of Quick Tool of getting items out without pausing, or make it turn into your Command System for RTS games, and probably make it a Control Panel/Video Hub for Communication in Some FPSs or Flight Games.

Well I think the most obvious usage would be as an x-ray vision cam, so you could look under the clothes of women NPCs or see the skeletons of male NPCs. I imagine that's in the works.
