For a minute, I ask everyone to put their personal feelings aside. I know that is difficult, but do it anyway.

Now, let's look at the fact.

Nintendo now plays by its own rules. Yes, it is in the same market, and therefore at least tangentially competing with Microsoft and Sony, but it's not competing with Microsoft and Sony for the core gaming market anymore. It does its own thing, and is very successful with it. Therefore, it has no incentive to try otherwise.

This leaves us with Microsoft and Sony. The two are locked in direct competition, both with highly similar products, both going after the exact same demographic. The thing about this competition is, it has left us with two incredibly awesome systems to own; Microsoft, at the beginning of this gen, coming off of the failure of the original Xbox, and wanting to undermine the virtual monopoly that Sony enjoyed with the PS2 at all costs, went out of its way to secure exclusives for the Xbox 360, make it fully featured, and basically make it a must own for gamers. They funded new exclusives, expanded on the suite of features LIVE offered, secured new franchises for their first party, ensured all third party PS3 exclusive games would also be coming to the 360, and generally went out of their way to make Sony's life miserable.

This made the 360 awesome to own, and that general inertia from the first half of this generation has carried over into ensuring that even when Microsoft began to take a more hands off approach with the system, it would continue to be worth owning.

On the other hand, once Sony realized that the ground under its feet was rapidly shrinking, it began to combat Microsoft's aggressive moves: it dropped the price on its system, in quick succession, till it was competitively priced. It expanded PSN until it was on par with LIVE, and kept it free, intrducing PSN+ instead as a paid incentives program that ultimately ended up well for everyone; recognizing that no third party would make PS3 exclusive games anymore, it began to expand on its own first party, developing and publishing franchises exclusive to the Playstation; competition from Microsoft made the PS3 as good as it is today.

Sony, however, today stands on the verge of a financial collapse; I know many who want Sony to go out of business, who would be happy if that happened, but that would be disastrous. Not because I feel that console gaming is defined by Sony, or that Sony is the best, or any such rubbish, but simply because Sony leaving will leave us with a de facto Microsoft monopoly. And we all know what a Microsoft monopoly is like. They would never be spurred to try anything, take any risks, do anything bold. We'd just be left with a complacent Microsoft throwing a bone to gamers every now and then while trying to consolidate its position by chasing core gamers (a more extreme form of what already happened this gen when Microsoft was leading Sony, and not even by all that much), and Nintendo being Nintendo.

That's why we need Sony: to keep Microsoft on its feet, and keep them performing efficiently.

TL;DR: Competition is good, and Sony leaving leaves us with a Microsoft monopoly.

I don't think anyone here except the most devoted fanboys wants Sony to go out of business. Competition is key in this industry, especially now that Nintendo has gone all, "F*ck, y'all we're gonna go do this thing over here."

 truth hurts huh?

charizard is actually right. Because the PS2 was so damn dominating it forced Microsoft to go all out if they wanted to compete. They got every single 3rd party franchise (besides a couple like Yakuza that only sell in Japan anyway), locked up a lot of 3rd party exclusives early this gen and ever since the 360 has been the main go to console this gen. That's why most games are lead developed for it, that's why it has the biggest and best selling exclusives, best online service. I mean if it wasn't for XBL just imagine how much worse PSN would currently be. It was as bad as Wii's online in 2006.

So if anything it would be bad if MS left the console race because then Sony would go back to the stone age like they did with PS3 to start the gen. MS is the company pushing the industry forward and has made things like online play a standard feature. Sony is not needed anymore and all they are doing is wasting Naughty Dog and MLB games which are the only things PS3 is good for.

Business is business.

Companies come and go.

It's been that way since forever and gaming is not excluded.

There have been many changes in the gaming history.

For example the once popular and powerful Atari and Sega got out of the console biz (Sega now making games for other systems and Atari being just a brand name).

Who's to say the same can't happen to Sony and/or MS?

Nintendo may be the most persistent and adaptive game/console company.

If a company will leave a new one will replace it.

It would be bad if Microsoft left too, but we all know they're nowhere close to leaving this industry; Sony is financially unstable, and it seems like many gamers want Sony to go. I'm arguing the counterpoint to that.

Are you serious? With all Sony's exceptional 1st party devs such as Naughty Dog? I really don't think so...

Microsoft going under would cause the least amount of damage.

Why do you think Sony is still needed? They don't really provide competition anymore. Mainly just an alternative for weaboos and people that can't afford a couple pennies a day for XBL. MS has full 3rd party support, top notch exclusives, and a great online service. That definitely wouldn't change without Sony.

Naughty Dog is all they have. Well that and the MLB series since there are no 3rd party baseball games right now. Most of their other games are overrated and you can find better choices on other systems or multiplats.

Because Microsoft has already relented in the last couple of years; whereas inertia dictates that the 360 is going to get all third party games, Microsoft itself hasn't been as aggressive ever since its position was secured as it was back when it was fighting to get a lead on Sony. This generation is done, but in this industry, successes do not carry over from generation to generation, and next generation will be a new battle. Sony is still needed.

Oh, and keeping a company around because it made some good business decisions in the past, but is totally f*cking up now, isn't a good idea either. Forcing businesses to change is why Ford and GM had to step up their game and make some better decisions to keep up with other automakers. I would only want Sony to go out of business if they are not willing to make the decisions necessary to stay in business.

They are the only ones who seem to care about games as their core focus anymore. They actually put the effort in to make a bunch of new IPs. MS only bothers to offer the bare minimum in terms of exclusives. If it's not a game that will turn into a huge, massively successful franchise, they aren't going to support it or keep making it.

Just like every other company in the world besides Sony. Just replace game with movie, music artist, tv show or whatever. Which is why Sony is headed torwards bankruptcy because they waste money on crap nobody wants.

Anyone that wants any of the console developers to go out of business is a complete idiot.. Competition drives innovation, and forces Sony and Microsoft to release the best hardware possible for a decent price...

[QUOTE="_Cadbury_"]They are the only ones who seem to care about games as their core focus anymore. They actually put the effort in to make a bunch of new IPs. So why did you purchase the PS3?

Incorrect: Nintendo is more focused on games than any of the other companies, most of which see games as services, and not games.

Sony's Music & Picture departments are doing fine; not sure about the others.

Sony isn't going to go out of business. Worst case scenario they would close some of their other divisions, people on here hyperbole so much.....

Still an opinion that many will disagree.

People can disagree with opinions, and have their own opinions. People cannot deny facts, and the fact is, Nintendo is the most gaming focused out of the Big Three.

I really didn't think so many of the games would be as mediocre as they are. You gotta admit that besides the Uncharted series and MGS4 the others are only hyped up because they are exclusive.

Dude, you're making Americans look bad. Just turn it down a bit and be civilised like the rest of Europe.

Maybe after you Europeans fix your crap economy, and stop relying on Godmerica for handouts.

Its your fault we're in this mess!

Sony is the GM of Japan.

If they get to any serious trouble the gov will step in.

Right now they need to burn off the fat in the company, and focus on what works (like the movie&game divisions)

Sony has made entirely too many piss poor decisions this gen.. to have me get all "weepy eyed" about their predicament. As a gamer I expect the entire package from a company and Sony was just too little too late this gen. In no way shape or form do I want Sony to exit the business, but they have to change their way of thinking to survive.

Sony are more than movies and games. Their music and broadcast arms are doing extremely well.

I was talking more between Sony and MS. Nintendo is probably the most focused on games (given their consoles have had nothing else to focus on..) but they don't produce much quality outside of their ancient franchises.

I think with Sony leaving it wouldn't affect the industry as much as you say. Remember when Sega left? Most people moved on. If this thread was made just after he PS2 era ended, it would have a larger impact. Now, looks like MS has taken the reigns in the sections Sony wates to thrive. Then there's the vita. I'm confident enough to say there won'r be another dedicated handheld form Sony. That being said, I don't want to see them go. Just fire those PR clowns and start making solutions.

The age of their franchises is irrelevant; regardless of your preferences, you have to accept that they are simply unmatched. Between Sony and Microsoft, yes, I agree.
