[QUOTE="_Cadbury_"]They are the only ones who seem to care about games as their core focus anymore. They actually put the effort in to make a bunch of new IPs. MS only bothers to offer the bare minimum in terms of exclusives. If it's not a game that will turn into a huge, massively successful franchise, they aren't going to support it or keep making it.GamerwillzPS

Just like every other company in the world besides Sony. Just replace game with movie, music artist, tv show or whatever. Which is why Sony is headed torwards bankruptcy because they waste money on crap nobody wants.

So why did you purchase the PS3?

He probably thought it would make the crap he posts on SW look more credible.

Sony is the GM of Japan.

If they get to any serious trouble the gov will step in.

Right now they need to burn off the fat in the company, and focus on what works (like the movie&game divisions)

clyde46

Sony are more than movies and games. Their music and broadcast arms are doing extremely well.

Like meant for example.

Their enertainment devisions as a whole are doing very well. What hurt them was their electronic division.

They still often sell Sony products at price inflation comparable to Apple, except unlike Apple no one buys them.

TC i dont see Sony dieing anytime soon. Theyre not just a video game company. But you know what we need? A 4th player. A new company to swoosh in and give the other 3 a run for their money.

Agree right now. I wouldn't mind seeing a better company replace M$ though. Like Sega or even Samsung???

Sony leaving would just leave a vacuum for some other company to fill. Then again, the traditional idea of a console (a big box you plug into your tv and stick games into) is archaic and will be eventually replaced with services instead of machines. So any company that replaces sony's role in the game market may approach it from a different angle.

Sony going out of business wouldnt bother me much at all. Seeing as this is probably the last gen I will get a console.

However, it would still be sad to see people lose jobs. And as you say, Sony provides competition for both MS as well as Nintendo.

Oh lord no.. The PS3 would have been trying to compete with the Wii in terms of power had it not been for their competition with Microsoft. In other words, the PS3 would've been just barely powerful enough to play games with Wii-like graphics in HD...

Varies generation by generation. The NES era was a complete monopoly, the SNES era was competitive, the PS1 era was competitive, the PS2 era was a de facto monopoly, the current generation is almost perfectly competitive.

At at no point did quality suffer, or the customer get screwed no matter who ruled the market, or by how much.

This won't change if Sony goes out of business.

Duopoly (MS & Sony) with Nintendo having monopoly in it's "own" category imo (which both duopolies tried to counter).

The graphics card and CPU race on the PC is also duopolistic (AMD vs Nvidia and AMD vs Intel).

With PS1 stomping the Sega Saturn and outselling the N64 by a 3-to-1 ratio?

Yeah right...

Unless you mean the adversting and games in which case I'd agree (altho neither Sega nor Nintendo could counter Sony's propaganda machine).

Also, the Sega Master System was competitive to NES (or "famiclone") in the Euro zone and South America.

And in the PS2 era Xbox established itself as a visible (in some ways superior) competitor.

I really didn't think so many of the games would be as mediocre as they are. You gotta admit that besides the Uncharted series and MGS4 the others are only hyped up because they are exclusive.

I have a similar opinion as yours towards 360 exclusives. They are not as excellent as you lems make them out to be.

If Sony is on the verge of collapse, then the entire Japanese electronics industry may be as well. I agree that (without SEGA), Sony going away would be a bad thing. But Playstation actually keeps Sony alive, despite Vita troubles. They're better off than Panasonic and SHARP.

I think the only 360 exclusives anyone really cares about are Halo, Gears, and Forza. All of them are pretty impressive games, but I'm not a big fan of racing sims, so it's only two for me.

Honestly video game companies come and go. It would suck for Sony but I wouldn't think it'd be the end of the world.

Then again I don't see either three going completely out of business.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="JohnnyCageMK"]

 truth hurts huh?

charizard is actually right. Because the PS2 was so damn dominating it forced Microsoft to go all out if they wanted to compete. They got every single 3rd party franchise (besides a couple like Yakuza that only sell in Japan anyway), locked up a lot of 3rd party exclusives early this gen and ever since the 360 has been the main go to console this gen. That's why most games are lead developed for it, that's why it has the biggest and best selling exclusives, best online service. I mean if it wasn't for XBL just imagine how much worse PSN would currently be. It was as bad as Wii's online in 2006.

So if anything it would be bad if MS left the console race because then Sony would go back to the stone age like they did with PS3 to start the gen. MS is the company pushing the industry forward and has made things like online play a standard feature. Sony is not needed anymore and all they are doing is wasting Naughty Dog and MLB games which are the only things PS3 is good for.

JohnnyCageMK

It would be bad if Microsoft left too, but we all know they're nowhere close to leaving this industry; Sony is financially unstable, and it seems like many gamers want Sony to go. I'm arguing the counterpoint to that.

Why do you think Sony is still needed? They don't really provide competition anymore. Mainly just an alternative for weaboos and people that can't afford a couple pennies a day for XBL. MS has full 3rd party support, top notch exclusives, and a great online service. That definitely wouldn't change without Sony.

considering in all but one year, the ps3 sell more consoles in year than the 360, I would assume that they are still in the competition.

Are you serious? With all Sony's exceptional 1st party devs such as Naughty Dog? I really don't think so...

Microsoft going under would cause the least amount of damage.

Naughty dog? meh

Agreed. Microsoft already acts like a tyrant sometimes, and if they had a monopoly on the Western developer console market it would be a nightmare.

Western developers have not shown much interest in Nintendo systems lately, maybe that will change with the Wii U though. Would PC and Microsoft consoles really be in direct competition with each other, or are the two focused on different customers?

The main reason I am worried about Sony going out of business is because of the boom in online multiplayer this generation, PSN is free but if Sony goes out of business we will be stuck with Xbox Live which costs monthly payments, for someone like me who does not constantly play online, this would be a bad thing because I have months where I play lots of online multiplayer but then there are other months where I mainly play single player, a 'pay as you play' option would have been much better for Xbox Live.

The only good thing about Sony going out of business would be the end of the Metal Gear Solid series.

Seeing Sony's current state though, I can't see them not charging for online next gen. It would really bring them lots of money, and the competition is doing it anyways. They need to charge online more than MS does.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind if they made the online access cards more expensive, but instead gave you 1 years worth of actual online time, not 1 year whether you're online or not. That'd be much more complicated, but at the same time also more fair. Either way, you can always just buy them 3 months at a time.

I always consider Sony to be the balance between MS & Nintendo. Without that balance, everything will break free, Nintendo monopolize handheld & MS monopolize consoles (maybe not, but I can imagine MS & Nintendo target at entirely different audience, not healthy at all), unless another company with the same vision as Sony step in.

Nice to see you agree, although it still would be better if both PSN and Xbox Live were free, that's why I chose as PS3, but if Sony goes out of business, I will have to get an Xbox 720 next generation.

It looks to me like MS isn't competing with the Sony anymore but competing with Nintendo instead with the whole casual Kinect approuch. They're just keeping a vague watch over Sony and it's PS3 now but I doubt they consider them worthy competitors. They want some of that casual pie.
