I was referring to the line that said "I want all cows to die".

Truthfully, if Sony would go out of business, it would be their fault for focusing on Blu Ray and 3DTV and then waiting too long to finally focus on the gaming aspect....
I would hate to lose Sony but I can guarantee that if they went out of business that someone else would step up. Sega dropped out of the console war but Microsoft stepped up soon after. I think either Valve, Activision, or Apple would join the war if Sony dropped out. Hell they still might regardless of a Sony demise.
It wouldn't bother me any. Companies come and go. Looking back at the years I've been gaming, there's so many roadkill littering the road.....
Atari, Commodore, Sega, Microprose, Spectrum Holobyte, 3DO...... and so on.
I'm still gaming happily. If Sony tanks, so be it. I'll just move on to other platforms.
It's not like I'm attached to any of them......
I disagree. A new arrival would likely enter. Heirren
I would hope something like that happened, just like Microsoft entering as Sega went. Although I'm not sure who has the power to do so, maybe Samsung.
The Playstation is the best thing Sony has come up with in the last 20 years. It has huge potential and is still a well known brand, despite being so expensive at launch the PS3 has still ended up selling 70 million with still a few years left on the market. Someone may want to take over the Playstation brand and continue it on, with some good choices they could easily take top spot next gen.
Presuming Sony have a decent plan for its future, I think the gaming market will be one of the last they drop out of, as it is potentially big money for them. From the rumours of the PS4 using AMD and more standard tech, it could come out strong.
[QUOTE="Heirren"]I disagree. A new arrival would likely enter. Frostbite24This exactly. There's no guarantee they'd cater for core gamers. Another arrival may go for a significantly more casual audience and would be likely to use weaker hardware to undercut the opposition where as with Sony they've been one of if not the best at catering to the core during each of their generations and don't look to be building a new console that is weaker than the next Xbox.

Truthfully my arse. The ones to blame here are the world economy, exchange rates and natural disasters. Before Sony Panasonic and Sharp would fall down first! And if all these companies go bankrupcy the Japanese economy would collapse.
I mean, you guys talk like if it were only Sony the ones that are having these financial issues but this includes every single TV manufacturer from Japan.

I hope Sony doesn't go under. I just bought a chunk of their stock...I dont want Sony to go out of business. The PS3 is my most played console this gen.
I want Sony to get their sh1t straight with the Vita.
I want all Cows to die.

You are the definition of non-fanboy. ;)
I do not agree.
You put way too much emphasis on the hardware.
What matters is the software. The software is currently split over those two systems and development costs are greater because of it. There are also too many games of the same genre with the same copycat features competing with each other, which waters down the product and drives up cost. The result is too many exclusive AAA games taking no chances because they only have 1/2 of the potential sales base to work with.
Yes I understand that we could end up spending more on each piece of hardware, but then again I wouldn't need to own both of them would I? Furthermore, the amount I spend on software far exceeds my hardware costs, so even if my h/w costs were 50% more I would have access to all the games on one platform and I would only need one platform.
This is the core of the PC gaming argument, which I accept. Only I don't want to PC game and prefer the ease associated with consoles. That could change if I could PC game on my 120 inch screen without having to bring my PC into my home theatre space.
For a minute, I ask everyone to put their personal feelings aside. I know that is difficult, but do it anyway.
Now, let's look at the fact.
Nintendo now plays by its own rules. Yes, it is in the same market, and therefore at least tangentially competing with Microsoft and Sony, but it's not competing with Microsoft and Sony for the core gaming market anymore. It does its own thing, and is very successful with it. Therefore, it has no incentive to try otherwise.
This leaves us with Microsoft and Sony. The two are locked in direct competition, both with highly similar products, both going after the exact same demographic. The thing about this competition is, it has left us with two incredibly awesome systems to own; Microsoft, at the beginning of this gen, coming off of the failure of the original Xbox, and wanting to undermine the virtual monopoly that Sony enjoyed with the PS2 at all costs, went out of its way to secure exclusives for the Xbox 360, make it fully featured, and basically make it a must own for gamers. They funded new exclusives, expanded on the suite of features LIVE offered, secured new franchises for their first party, ensured all third party PS3 exclusive games would also be coming to the 360, and generally went out of their way to make Sony's life miserable.
This made the 360 awesome to own, and that general inertia from the first half of this generation has carried over into ensuring that even when Microsoft began to take a more hands off approach with the system, it would continue to be worth owning.
On the other hand, once Sony realized that the ground under its feet was rapidly shrinking, it began to combat Microsoft's aggressive moves: it dropped the price on its system, in quick succession, till it was competitively priced. It expanded PSN until it was on par with LIVE, and kept it free, intrducing PSN+ instead as a paid incentives program that ultimately ended up well for everyone; recognizing that no third party would make PS3 exclusive games anymore, it began to expand on its own first party, developing and publishing franchises exclusive to the Playstation; competition from Microsoft made the PS3 as good as it is today.
Sony, however, today stands on the verge of a financial collapse; I know many who want Sony to go out of business, who would be happy if that happened, but that would be disastrous. Not because I feel that console gaming is defined by Sony, or that Sony is the best, or any such rubbish, but simply because Sony leaving will leave us with a de facto Microsoft monopoly. And we all know what a Microsoft monopoly is like. They would never be spurred to try anything, take any risks, do anything bold. We'd just be left with a complacent Microsoft throwing a bone to gamers every now and then while trying to consolidate its position by chasing core gamers (a more extreme form of what already happened this gen when Microsoft was leading Sony, and not even by all that much), and Nintendo being Nintendo.
That's why we need Sony: to keep Microsoft on its feet, and keep them performing efficiently.
TL;DR: Competition is good, and Sony leaving leaves us with a Microsoft monopoly.

As a PC gamer I may actually benefit from Sony going out of business. If developers who make PS3 exclusives no longer had to be PS3 exclusive then maybe they would be ported to PC more often. Not to mention that companies that didn't want to deal with Microsoft or Nintendo may go over to PC as well without Sony. I don't see how I lose.
