There is a poll  in the HD-DVD section at avsforum.com asking if they are still getting a Elite 360 even tho it does not output uncompressed/lossless audio.  78% of the voters are no longer getting the elite because it doesn't output lossless/uncompressed audio.

I started the poll at avsforum,  and im really upset about this!  WTF is the point of  half-assed HDMI if can only do half it's job?  I hope Sony takes advantage of this and with the right marketing,  this could be a blow to the Xbox 360.

Than buy a stand alone HD-DVD player. Most people are getting the Elite 360 for games, HD-Movies and tv shows they will buy from XBLM and also IPTV.

I don't have room for a stand alone HD-DVD player,  besides MS telling me "if you want lossless audio,  buy a stand alone HD-DVD player" after the fact that i have already bought a HD-DVD drive is just not good enough..

You would be seriously surprised. My father is an "audiophile." He has 5+ pairs of headphones and like 9 different stereo components. He goes to electronics stores and listens carefully to each stereo/speaker model and reads up on what will be the best combo. Point is: Yeah, many of them would. You might not, but they sure as hell would. And that does not change the fact that the Elite console doesn't make you feel very Elite. But let's be honest. It's just a 360 for IPTV, that's all. Not worth it for anyone who isn't interested.

That is ridiculous, especially for a console that has the option for HDDVD. The PS3 supports 1080p uncompressed audio.

what is lossless audio?? skyvader

It's uncompressed audio.  And uncompressed audio is exactly what it sounds like...It has no compression whatsoever,  it's bit for bit exactly like it was always supposed to sound like..

Dolby Digital = Regular Surround Sound with up to 640kbps bitstreams

Dolby Digital Plus & DTS = Surround Sound,  usually 1.5mbps bitstreams

TrueHD & DTS-HD MA = Surround sound,  usually bitstreams between 3.0mbps-7.0mbps bitstreams.

So basically,  uncmopressed audio has a crapload more data

wth? That's lame... like really lame. I mean I'd rather have HD than lossless audio... but the difference is so amazing from my AV cables to HDMI on my PS3 sound-wise.

There is a noticeable difference with lossless audio but if thats whats keeping you from buying a 360 or any console, you might wanna go see a doctor about getting the stick removed from your a**.

it appears that it's a failure of the HDMI inclusion of the elite, even if some won't care.

Even if they did this, they would have to make the console itself extremely quiet, for it to be excepted in the audiophile world.

We're talking to the same level Pro music Computers are modded to be almost silent.

Plus why an Audio/videophile would use something like a 360/PS3 for this is beyond me. The components that Audio/videophiles use isn't just high tech, every aspect of the insides have been designed with the highest materials, the least interference and most solid construction to reduce vibration interference to a minimum. Not even the PS3 could live up to those standards.

Both are entry level players in that market. A proper player for audio or video would destroy the X360 or PS3.

Even using it for space saving reasons would be too much of a compromise.

Any home theater setup with a HDMI receiver would benefit from uncompressed/lossless audio

Last time I checked the only receiver on the market that supported that lossless audio stuff was about 1500 bucks. Then you need the speakers to show it off. Then you need a movie that supports it which right now isn't that many blu-ray or hd-dvd. You also need some golden ears. Its the biggest so what on the face of the earth. If people can't tell the difference between CD and MP3 they sure as heck won't tell the difference between Dolby Digital and Dolby HD. Funny thing about "tech" audiophiles...most of them are tone deaf in my experience. Just tech geeks who live to buy the latest gizmo.

Upgrading to a HDMI Denon receiver late this year, so this is bad news for me.

But I'll be getting the Elite regardless, since I need Gears of War.

Nice to know that PS3 has lossless audio.

I can only imagine how DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD will sound on PS3 games.

Kojima, make it happen!!!!!!

I don't think MGS4 will use lossless audio since I doubt all the audio could fit on one 50gb Blu-Ray disc.

Not sure if it's lossless audio like Dolby's true HD but Kojima and the sound director already said that they are using a considerably big portion of the audio top quality, like 7.1, not sure if it will be for the whole game though, it's here on a GS article.

The PS3's blu-ray player is really really good. Comparable to best on the market, as reviewed by videophile sites. Too lazy to look up the link. The only true-shortcoming is that it lacks analog outputs, the other way to enjoy multi-channel PCM (HDMI is not the only way).

Just about every sentence in your post is wrong. Cheapest receiver that can support multi-channel PCM over HDMI is Panasonic XR57, on sale at Amazon for $302, free shipping no tax. DTD HD and TrueHD is different, yes. You do need decent speakers, of course. Lots of material supports MC PCM. And games as well (not sure if every game must, but they have the space with Blu-Ray).

DVD doesn't even support Lossless Audio. Plus no game on PC,PS3, or 360 have that anyway. BD is using uncompressed PCM audio, though with a lower sampling rate... so it's not what you would call true loseless. 3-4 titles with Dolby TrueHD tracks. FYI - This is a true loseless codec with bitrates up to 8mb/sec. This COULD come to Blu-ray, though it's virtually impossible on a 25gig disc with MPEG2 video. The Blu-ray camp has some serious catching up to do on the software side of things. As thedigitalbits.com's Bill Hunt says, "HD DVD is making Blu-ray look pretty silly right now."

According to this for Dolby trueHD is just a codec difference where Bluray has but it's not mandatory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_TrueHD

What are you talking about? PCM uncompressed audio is the purest stream you can get. You call uncompressed PCM audio "not what you would call true lossless." You do understand that when you call a codec "lossless" it means lossless compared to uncompressed PCM audio, don't you, which isn't compressed. And your remarks regarding BD on the software side is out of date. Go to highdefdigest BD camp has been encoding their disks using VC-1 the same codec as HD DVD has been using. Blu-ray is making HD DVD look silly because it has caught up to and passed total sales since inception even though they've been out many months less.

[QUOTE="jdang307"][QUOTE="rexoverbey"]DVD doesn't even support Lossless Audio. Uncompressed PCM is not true lossless because it is converted by choosing a discrete value near the analog signal for each sample. Basically it is decoded which is not what is classified as the true original signal even when it is not compressed. VC-1 has nothing to due with audio it is a video codec. Plus the Dolby True HD counterparts would be much better since the PCM streams used on the PS3 are only 16-bit 44khz.

Resistance:  Fall of Man outputs up to 7.1 uncompressed audio:|.  Uncompressed and Lossless are the same damn thing.  BD and HD players decode TrueHD and DTS-HD lossless audio and convert it to uncompressed LPCM.  Think of TrueHD and DTS-HD as zip files for uncompressed LPCM

[QUOTE="Darth_DuMas"]

The PS3's blu-ray player is really really good. Comparable to best on the market, as reviewed by videophile sites. Too lazy to look up the link. The only true-shortcoming is that it lacks analog outputs, the other way to enjoy multi-channel PCM (HDMI is not the only way).

The PS3 is a really good BD player,  but the ony site i saw make comparison was comparing it to the sorriest BD player out on the market,  the Samsung BD player.

So lets put it this way: The Elite is STILL a watered down PS3, the Premium is a misleading screw-over, and the Core is a tard-package?
