This isn't about the multiplayer component of an FPS, but rather the single player part.

So which FPS of this generation has the best single player campaign, taking into consideration both gameplay and plot.

My vote goes to Bioshock, it wins even over the Half Life series (mostly because of plot).

Bioshock had some pretty awesome combat and locations, but I think the best part of the game was the plot and backstory. It's one of the only FPS games I've seen that really makes you think, especially if you bothered to find every single detail of the plotline. And the midgame plot twist just screws with your mind.

Your opinions?

Half Life 2 series if it counts. Likable characters, well done world, interesting plot and good gameplay.

Yup Bioshock is the only one that comes to mind. Most of the other ones focused on online and tacked on the single player.

I'd say Call of Duty 4. If IW could make the game twice as long, while keeping the action fresh the whole way through, it would have been one of my favorite FPS campaign. It's only drawback was it's length.

Oh wow im a fool. TF2 had the single best SP campaign I have ever played. So many amazing moments and who would have though spies campaign would be so heartbreaking. Truly the masterpiece of the generation.

Half-Life 2 has great storytelling, but the gunplay isn't the best. I say FEAR (though it lacks good characters) or COD 4 (though the plot isn't very imaginative or involving).

I haven't played very many FPS, but for me it's between KZ2 and Bioshock.

Oh, TC said plot too. Guess that leaves Bioshock lol.

I actually had a hard time thinking of one with both. I can't think of one. Maybe I'm playing all the wrong FPSes.

The game that comes closest would be Battlefield: Bad Company. It's funny, modest, and good fun. It has both entertaining gunplay and a refreshingly lighthearted narrative that's worth paying attention to.

I would say Bioshock, except for the awful plot twists 60% of the way in. The last 15 minutes of the game crushed my heart, they were so disappointing. The corridor shooting was fun, though.

Bioshock is win. I never got why people loved Half Life 2's story that much. It's got great characters, but the story itself didn't really impress me.

Bioshock was really good.

I thought ODST was good also. I mean it was really short but probably the best halo campaign. (Aside from CE)

STALKER SoC is top dog: Gunplay isn't weak or unsatisfying like HL2 or Bioshock while it also has a great setting, atmosphere and a story that keeps you engaged enough to continue deeper and deeper into the man-made hell that is the Zone.

COD4, KZ2, Resistance, Halo 3 all have great shooting but lack in the story and plot department.

STALKER is the complete package.

I completely forgot about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.. While I think Bioshock's story is a little better, Stalker outshines it in every other area.

I change my answer to this.

Crysis hands down!!! I've never went back to play through a FPS single player until I've played Crysis. Hell it's single player is 100x better than it's multiplayer which is now a days, the only reason to justify purchasing a shooter.

Back when I beat Half-Life 2 on PC when it came out I was like...WOW AMAZING GAME.

It still is the best FPS experience this gen story/gameplay wise. Also for graphics at it's time, but they still hold up with today's standards thanks to mods.

Bioshock was good but it could really be a lot better. Seens to me that everywhere people requires that any sort of story (game or movie)have a plot twist, most of them when I see I can't hope to feel that it does not add anything to the story, but instead it impoverish the story. I felt that afterBioshock's twist the game got a little worse than the entire first part. Before the launching of the game the dev's were taunting that Bioshock was going to be a highly dinamic game, that every time you played again would bedifferent; it turn out not to be that way and that's what got me disapointed with it, there's only a limited amount of ways to play it despite off all the plasmid and weapons. Some methods/plasmids were so much more efficient than others, and the enemies so limited that there were not much incentive to explore the gameplay.

In that sense i would say that gameplay-wise the SP i liked the most was Crysis, was the only game that came close to fulfill it's hype in gameplay.

Story-wise I would say Cryostasis.

Bioshock

Killzone 2 had a pretty good story if you ask me- its the dialogue, Rico and Natko who kinda ruin it.

I love the back story of Resistance- but I guess the plot itself is fairlyweak.

I would definitely pick Half-Life 2 for how amazing it is and how well rounded up it is, Call of Duty 4 definitely is an amazing (if short) experience with variety in almost every mission and crazy, water cooler story set pieces dished out like they were going out of style. Bioshock is also great, but the shooter part isn't as focued as the other games.

I pick Half-Life 2 overall, with an amazingly told story with great moments and it just never seems to take a break off the action for even a second once it starts.

BioShock wins this gen since we haven't had a full Half-Life release this gen. :P

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had a great plot and gamplay, but bugs and poor storytelling let it down.

For me I would have to say HL2, and then Chronicles of riddick escape from butcher bay.
