Of the games I've played personally, definitely Bioshock.

I'd go with HL 2. While Bioshock had some awesome story, I found the actual gameplay lacking. HL 2 had a better mix of both elements.
Edit: Well, since it has been pointed out that it would be a stretch to consider HL2 part of this gen (I would since the episodes have been released this gen, but whatever), my next candidate would be Crysis. While it's story is weak, it's gameplay more than makes up for it. It is the only shooter this gen I've managed to get through multiple times and enjoy everytime.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
It seems a fondness for Bioshock's atmosphere, story and characters have been imprinted in many people's minds but the mediocre gunplay has been strangely forgotten. Say what you will about how Half-Life 2 feels but its sure as heck better than Bioshock.
This. FPS plots are always so.... mehhhhh... Half-Life 2 had a great plot by FPS standards and great characters by gaming standards, so I'd vote that. Still, FPS isn't a genre known for great plots or characters.I never knew a FPS could have a good plot and characters.

Anyone who doesn't say Bioshock hasn't played it.Angry_Meat
PARADOX
Even if I thought Bioshock's story was more than competent, I wouldn't be able to overlook its horrid gunplay. Even HL2's was better.

I found Half Life 2's plot to be pretty unremarkable, what made it so great was the way it was presented to the player. The presentation, not the plot, is what's amazing about the Half Life series.
On topic, Crysis has the best single-player campaign for a shooter this gen. It's let down by a predictable story and shallow characters but it nailed the gameplay and level design, and that's what I look for in a shooter. Stalker should also get a mention.
I don't really like HL2's campaign. It's pretty dull in comparison to the other two...Half-Life 2 by a mile. And yes, I've played BioShock. A few times in fact.

well hl2 doesn't really count since it came out last gen. bioshock and crysis are both great in their own ways, but I like the open worlds of crysis and you can have so much fun with the nano suit. story isn't the best but the gameplay is among the best in any sp fps. imprezawrx500it did on consoles, the orange box, and episode 2 was releasd this gen
Half-Life 2, definitely. delta3074this, especially episode 2 Especially the ending .... My god
come into thread... ctrl+F....kill......(Ithink: oh god someone actually thinks this).... looks at poster.... why would you do that :(Top 3 = Half Life2, Crysis and Stalker are the best signleplayer FPS this gen imo.
Bioshock and Killingzone2 was also good.

I dont understand bud :(
I vote Bioshock. The only FPS game I've played with an intriguing storyline. Plus, it has no super-soldiers, no wars, no BS that plagues most FPS games these days.
I've heard the Half-Life series has a good storyline, but I haven't got around to playing them yet.
Half-Life 2 was not released this generation. It was Re-Released on the Orange Box, but that doesn't count.Half-Life 2 by a mile. And yes, I've played BioShock. A few times in fact.

Im gonna throw you a bone, in MW2 really knows how to set up it's set pieces. in MW2 you go from one set piece to the next. It's no stop action all the way, too bad it's very short, and I'm not such a big fan of the multiplayer. But the level...
...in the US is breath taking IMO. Sure we've had games where the US gets attacked, but I think MW did it perfectly. The sight of parachutes landing on US Suburban houses is disturbing in it's own way. Great level imo.
*Raises Flame Shield*
I'd say Call of Duty 4. If IW could make the game twice as long, while keeping the action fresh the whole way through, it would have been one of my favorite FPS campaign. It's only drawback was it's length.
"Of Their Own Accord" is one of the best levels this generation. It was a little bit haunting, and extremely well designed. In fact, all the American levels were excellent. However, it was all too short, and the writing was total trash.kinda hard to say, i think it's easier to nominate levels than it is the whole game
imo best fps levels this gen: COD4 "All Ghillied Up", Crysis zero-g alien ship level, Bioshock "Fort Frolic"

Totally agree with you there, as much as people like to hate on the singleplayer because it was too short, it's still one of the best I've played, it felt like an action movie, but not in a MW2 sort of way where it felt like a bad Hollywood blockbuster, it felt like District 9, something that had a lot of love and care put into it, which meant the end result was an action game that didn't feel stupidly over the top, but still managed to throw around these insane ideas like the nuke scene, or the Chrenobyl section.
And the length wasn't that big a deal for me, yeah you can complete it in about 4-5 hours, but it's still re-playable for me, and I think the short length stopped it doing what some games do which is going into "OK I'm bored now, can I please stop playing this same section over and over again" territory like the first Halo game does (I do think Halo CE is great but you must admit certain sections were ridiculous *cough* the library *cough*)
Its a very tough call. All the FPS's that have come all have had their strongs points that are better then the rest. Halo to me would have to be up there as number one just because of all around aspect that it gave to you as a gamer. From the story, to the campaign, to the characters. In my opinion it hit all the areas very well. To me though personally I had a more enjoyable and fun experience with Gears of War. I mean even though the story was non exsistent, The characters were amusing and interesting and the gameplay was off the hook for me personally. A very memorable game for me. Still Halo has to get the nod because it meets all the criteria that is in this topic.
