I'll say Mass Effect. I never played any other BioWare game because I used to be a Sony fanboy and I tried playing Oblivion but hated it so it only made me think even more that JRPGs over WRPGs, but after playing Mass Effect it opened my eyes. The game did have it's flaws but nothing to big for me. The most important part of a game to me is story, and Mass Effect has a great one.
Really hearing alot of good things from this game but I am a wus and dont like scarry dark games.
It really is a pretty excellent original game. Hopefully the game encourages EA to give us more of this. I watched much of it being played on jtv, because I can't afford it with everything else coming out :(

ID-tagged soldiers, with ID-tagged weapons",.... solid snake's last mission is my GOTY and GOTG. super mario galaxy close behind. other that everything has been almost great, bioshock, mass effect, metroid 3, smash bros, gta4 all almost there but not smg and mgs4's level i mean seriously when u see snake turn his head away from the boss's grave and see the eye patch,.... and there stands big boss.....damn thats honestly my favorite moment in gaming ever. better than finding out i was darth revan.

You need to put it at the top of your list. I catch myself repeating WOW, I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT as I continue on through the game! The asteroid shooting gallery is lame but so far that is the only bad implementation in the game.
insofar as being a benchmark in survial horror, it seriously should be Dead Spacemlbslugger86
ive played dead space its really realky good, but its a shooter. nothing is silent hill 2, fatal frame, or even condemned scary. i consider it a different more thought zero gravity RE4 without ganadoes.

That's a matter of opinion. I feel the opposite. Dead Space is the new benchmark IMO.
I got bored quick with GTA4. How many times can you do the same thing over and over. You've gotta put CoD4 up there for being one of the most complete experiences of the generation. Mass Effect was the most imerssive in my opinion. I don't know if I have a favorite yet. Im hoping it will be fallout3.
For me, Halo 3, still the most played game on XBL, won't be when Gears 2 comes out, but it is kind of expected a year later. But yeah, love the game to death and play to this day!
Right now I say Metal Gear Solid 4 since it had a story that made you care about Solid Snake's final battle . I would say the second best game of this gen is Gears of War 1
