Thatt's incrediblysilly. I disagree with Foxhound on this issuebut this actually has no base what so ever. You can't attack everyone who doesn't share your opinion.

ActicEdge

Actic, don't forget that this happens quite A LOT in System Wars. I ran into this many times.

Sure but this post has no base. Foxhound doesn't even mention nuts and bolts. How on earth did he get callled out for that? Sure, I am of the opinion that there can be crappy opinions but you can't actually just say your wrong because I dislike your opinion. Especially with no rebuttle. Foxhound already admits they're exceptional games, he just doesn't like them, what more can you ask for?

That's true, I also didn't see the "Nuts and Bolts" part. :P

But either way, getting bashed for your own opinions always happens here, no matter what.

@gmc: He never mentioned anything about Nuts & Bolts. Foxhound fully justified his opinion, he wasn't blindly bashing in any way. :?

@foxhound_fox: I guess I see where you are coming from. When I judge a game, I don't really care how so much about how much it innovated, but how I felt while playing the game. Both OoT and SMG had some of the highest polish in their respective genres when they were released and were a blast to play (for me). They are a bit overrated, but they were among the best at what they did. Again, I totally understand your viewpoint and I do wish that people would be a bit more open-minded when someone states something like SMG isn't the best platformer. But you know, that's how hive mentality works. It doesn't only exist in gaming forums.

To be fair, I'm naturally biased sence I don't like him one bit. It's just that he says some REALLY asinine things.

Please. Those asinine things are some of the smartest things anyone has said on SW.

Braid.

The complete package of art design, plot, platforming elements with time-controlling puzzles was excellent. Both Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. Wii struck me as "been-there-done-that" games that, despite being exceptional in quality, not as striking as Braid.

EDIT: I would also like to mention Mirror's Edge and give it recognition for advancing the 3D FPS platforming genre with its parkour mechanics. Despite being a FPS/platformer hybrid (and not a full-blown platformer, somewhat similar to Metroid Prime in this respect), it was an exceptional game that really broke the mold when it came to controlling a character in first-person.

foxhound_fox

I did enjoy Braid a lot. An incredible package as you say, but a little overpriced for how much content there was, and once all the puzzles are solves, there's not much incentive to go back.

I loved Braid, but calling it a platformer is like calling Portal a FPS. Sure, looking at screenshots that is what they look like, but they both play much more like puzzle games. Perhaps Fox's sense of innovation came from the fact that he was playing a different genre. Anyway, I still like Galaxy more than Braid regardless.

Braid is a puzzle-plataformer a sub-genre of platform games.

Well, Super Mario Galaxy was the only one I really liked this gen. Haven't touched the PS3 yet, so.... Yeah. And the 360 doesn't really have any big ones. I loved Nut and Bolts but I don't consider it a platformer. More of an action adventure game.

Little Big Planet by a wide margin. It's so damn creative and off the wall it sends games like SMG out to pasture. I don't expect people who still care about Mario to look for innovation, though. No, the waggle doesn't count.

Kiyobear

So, do absolutely horrible floaty mechanics, extremely slow-paced action, and imprecise controls count as innovations for you?

pffft, lol

Lantern-Cusp

All one has to do is view one of the many attempts by LBP users to imitate Mario games to see how horrid the platforming mechanics in LBP are. Watching that video is like watching a Mario game being played at half speed and with unbearable input lag. Why is it so slooooow?

gmc2u_64

Lolwut? I thought you were "over" Nuts & Bolts? Where exactly did I mention N&B in any of my posts in this thread? I never hyped Nuts & Bolts, nor did I expect anything from it. It came out of nowhere and surprised me. Can you ever respond to a post of mine without resorting to a personal attack?

And I don't understand... why are you so uptight about the change comment I made so many months ago? I was using in reference to the Banjo Kazooie series. Without some kind of change, you are merely rehashing the same game over again. Look at Modern Warfare 2... the exact same game with a new coat of paint and some new levels/weapons/perks. A highly stagnated game that definitely brings down the genre. Sure, its popular and people love it... but what good does that do to further gaming with new ideas? No new idea needs to be successful. Any developer that tries a new idea, and it works, but may or may not be successful, at least they tried and gave us gamers a new way to look at games. That is far better than just feeding fans what they want for a cash grab.

I did enjoy Braid a lot. An incredible package as you say, but a little overpriced for how much content there was, and once all the puzzles are solves, there's not much incentive to go back.

jimkabrhel

That is true. There was the speed running and hidden stars, but they were just so hard to achieve, I doubt most people even tried.

Another "platformer" I would like to mention, is Crayon Physics. Not a very traditional platformer, but definitely a unique one.

Metroid Prime is not a FPS, but has FPS elements. As a "FPS" it is still a very excellent game, despite all the added exploration and platforming elements. If you read my original post about Braid, you would notice I mentioned the fact that Braid combined platforming with puzzles in a way that make it, for me, a very enjoyable platforming experience. Just like how Metroid Prime combined FPS, platforming and adventure/exploration elements in a way that made me more appreciate the FPS genre (it is hard to deny that the Prime series is not based off the FPS genre).

Its between the 2 Mario games for me. NSMBW easily has the best level design in any mario game and you can have up to 4 players. SMG though was innovative with the whole gravity thing. So I really cant decide.

I said my comment here but kind of changed it a little bit.

1. Super mario galaxy

2. Littlebigplanet

3. New super mario bros wii

4. Infamous

5. R&C a crack in time

_-----------------------------------------

Everything else.

Is Infamous considered a platformer?

It should be tbh. It has so much platforming in the game. Much more than ratchet tools of destruction and other ratchet games except R&C a crack in time.

 So every game is supposed to handle exactly the same? I think the controls are superb, and slow paced action? LOL you havent even played the game have you?

All one has to do is view one of the many attempts by LBP users to imitate Mario games to see how horrid the platforming mechanics in LBP are. Watching that video is like watching a Mario game being played at half speed and with unbearable input lag. Why is it so slooooow?

First off that might be the worst level I have ever seen on LBP, that level set up doesnt do the LBP gameplay ****justice at all. I guess we all got our opinions, as much as i love mario " still play SMW for SNES " i think LBP is a much better platformer in all areas.

Littlebigplanet is the best i've played so far. Rachet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was pretty good one too but i'm more into sidescroller platform games and other than PSN downloads my options are miniscule.

The 2 best platformers of this generation are easily as follows:

1. Super Mario Galaxy

2. New Super Mario Bros.

Also I'm almost 100% certain that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be added to that short list very soon.
