Im not sure about the best story ever. This gen it goes to Mass Effect imo

Metal Gear Solid 3, best in series.

The overabundance of shooters with stories as deep as a puddle after a fresh rain and the extreme lack of Xenogears and Silent Hill 2 is both alarming and frightening.

Honorable mention for a war game: Brother's in Arms: Hell's Highway.

Mass Effect, I love it.

Looks like lot of people here need to play "Planescape torment".

I really have to disagree with this and imo parts of it were more confusing than MGS2 (Which was really confusing at times btw), But I would say Metal Gear Solid 1 had the best story because it was well told, it had great plot twists, excellent characters and everything made sense. Don't get me wrong though because at times MGS4 was fantastic but MGS1 stayed at a high level the whole way through.

Planescape Torment; no single game can come close.

I have a feeling alo of people like MGS3 story the most cause its more staright forward a-b then the others. I just didint like it as much cause none of the villians had a backstory. Only the boss and electro man had a backstory. They did it in 1,2 and was happy when they brought it back with 4.

The MGS series is just amazing, Kojima really is a visionary. I was watching State of Play yesterday (awesome movie) and the whole Pointcorp PMC conspiracy thing reminded me of MGS4. The MGS games always have really cool themes and morals, great style, great characters and character development, I love the twists too.

Most game, like nearly all of them, have awful awful stroies compared to other mediums. Shaodw of the Colossus though has the best stroy of any game.

I think Half life 2 had the story that i was the most interested in (and characters and world too). But Bioshock is very close up there, i like the connections to Ayn Rand even if they are against her.

I like stories where they leave some mystery, Ico is a good example.

4. Silent Hill 2

Max Payne, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV all got some amazing stories.

Half-Life's story isn't too deep, but the fact that there is one the way its presented (no breaks since the very first one, EVER) makes it a pretty amazing feat.

Metal Gear Solid 3 has the best stroy in a videogame ever.

Close tie between XenoGears (PSX) and PlaneScape Torment (PC). Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story and Half Life 2 are high on the list also.
