I don't know what people see in this game. It was the typical Bioware storyline. Hero who can't do wrong gathers party and saves world from ancient evil.

You can narrow down every game like that, for example. The Witcher : Hero who can't do wrong has sex and gets his potions back. See how stupid that sounds? Now read your post again.

No you can't sum up The Wither storyline like that. You're not fighting a long forgotten Evil that rose up again. You're fighting a personal enemy that killed your friend. And the Mastermind behind it all was...well i would spoil it. But it's not your typical stuff Bioware uses in every game. And i remember in the Witcher, i made choices that had an actual impact. It's not bad/good choices it's on a different level. Sheppard in Mass Effect is this kind of badass, you go in save the planets, go out, save the world, ect...He has no real personality.

Oh, look! McGee is sarcastically trolling on MGS's storyline again. That goof, he always is so good about coming up with new material! :P :| Whenever I see this thread I always stop in to throw down the one, the only: BioShock. It's impressive how much character depth and internal dilemma the game produces without a heavy use of cutscenes of NPC interaction.

The story for Heavy Rain just reeled me in. It was fantastic, I dont care if it was a "movie" it was well done. I have not played a game that had so many unique and interesting characters, and the fact that the ending greatly changes really is awesome. Loved it.

It is though. As much as I love ME1 it is your typical Bioware story and not so orginal Space Opera but I still love it.

Infinite Space satisfied my want for a Space Opera. I do love me some Mass Effect though.

1.The reapers arn't evil.
2.The hero can do plenty wrong. Every bioware game main character can do evil things like JE closing dam and letting people starve, Kotor's kill a droid who belongs a personcrazyfor it and telling that same person the droid is still alive so that person would spend their entire life looking of it. It just that your not punished for you evil deeds and ME IS NOT BLACK AND WHITE.
3. Who's the ancient evil in BG, JE, and Kotor.

Prince Of Persia 2008. Often overlooked but if you like good quality writing that might compare favourably even when looking outside the field of video games, this game had it - you can hardly ever say that about a game.

Really ?
Azar Javed = Saren Alvin (Grandmaster) = Sovereign. In a way. It seems you didn't really pay attention to the game, you aren't hunting the Salamandra because they killed Leo, you are hunting them cause they stole the mutagens. Oh and Geralt is not a badass ? :P Sure, there were choices in the Witcher that had impact, they weren't as deep as people make them sound, sure you killed Abigail, she doesn't appear in 4th chapter (WHO WOULD HAVE TOUGHT !?), and I remember that Hot Potatoes quest that didn't happen cause you saved Zoltan or something like that, but in the end it all boiled down to Neutral / Squoia'tel / Order of the Flaming Rose. Same with Mass Effect.
But you are right, you can't sum up the Witcher's story like that, but you can't do the same for ME either.

This thread reveals just how low the storytelling standards are when it comes to video games.

If MGS4 was anything but a video game, people would laugh at its relativeincoherence, its heaps of irrelevant exposition, the silliness of the plot, the endless tangents, the **** pacing. But because it is one of the fewvideo game franchisesthat even tries when it comes to its story, it gets praised.

Why whatever do you mean? Surely you couldn't be offended over words on a computer screen. That's just so unlike you! And why I'll have you know good sir, I'm being entirely serious! Why Mr. Kojima is a mastermind of storytelling by golly. His clever and inventive ways of avoiding plot devices just can't be matched, I say!

As I said above, the story of PoP 2008 compares favourably even with other forms of entertainment, but is often forgotten about. Some games do 'try' and pull it off better than Metal Gear.

damn, if the stories of msg4 and mass effect 1/2 are the best of this generation, then there is definitely something wrong

NaveedLife

And you have actually played and beaten MGS1-4? I doubt it.

I've played all of them and I'd agree with him (at least about MGS. I've never played the Mass Effect games). MGS stories to me are the sort that look cool and have exciting moments, but are pretty silly when you think about them and rather poorly told with alot of questionable dialogue and pretentiousness. The only MGS game that IMOcame close to approaching any sort of greatness story-wise is MGS3 and that's only in you compare it to other games.

I realize that. I agree with you that the Prince of Persia story is far superior to MGS and would actually translate well to another medium because it is a graceful subtle story.

I'm just saying that the overall standard of videogame storytelling is so low that poorly told silly stories like MGS4 look good simply because they put forth way more effort than say, the average FPS.

I would love to know how many people actually played MGS1-3 (beat them) then played 4 (and beat it) and think the MGS story line sucks. lol I bet not too many.

NaveedLife

Like I said, I played all four of them, and while I liked much about MGS3's storyline, the series as a whole has a very silly plot (its hard to tell if you're supposed to take it seriously at the times)and is drowned in heeps of exposition, boring tangents about technology, cheesy dialogue, etc.

Azar Javed = Saren Alvin (Grandmaster) = Sovereign. In a way. No connection whatsoever. Bad guys have lackies yes. That's about the only connection here. My point is Geralt made mistakes, and innocent people were killed and not everything always worked out the way you wanted. Sheppard is like go in save the planet, save the population, everything works out. You can accomplish anything, and Sheppard is just an ordinary soldier. He doesn't have any skills really that separate him from other soldiers. My point is ME is generic and it borrows a lot from other Bioware games, especially from KOTOR. There was no emotional connection whatsoever, the Vilain was this badly thought out ancient robot. Is it too much to ask for good storytelling from Bioware, something that feels personal, instead of the same old character archtypes in every game.

I think his point is that you can replace "Reapers" with "Sith" and "Darkspawn" and you just described 2 more BioWare games.

Did you play Mass Effect? The Reapers are not the same as the Collectors. Maybe you should get the basic concepts right before declaring it a masterpiece in storytelling.
Mass Effect answers everything with ancient allien races. Reapers - Unknown ancient alien race. Collectors - another ancient alien race. The creativity is killing me.GeneralShowzer

Ok....did you even play Mass Effect? Do you even understant that the collectors are the Reapers and Mass Effect is about the reapers?

Did you play Mass Effect? The Reapers are not the same as the Collectors. Maybe you should get the basic concepts right before declaring it a masterpiece in storytelling.

The collectors are the reapers tools. They are no longer alive. They might as well be the reapers themselves, but in truth they were their avatars.

My problem is that Nanomachine in MGSare used as on big Deus ex machina. Thestory is not able nanomahines like how ME is about the reapers nor are the naomachine the antagonist of the story of mgs.

That's wrong. The reapers are robots made from the goo of the advanced races they enslave every 50 000(?) years. It sounds stupid but it is what it is. You need to get the story before you say it's this genereations finest.

You did not play ME2. The reapers are organic and inorganic beings. They're not machines. Also, collects are the tool for the reapers. All this is confirmed in ME2. If you played ME2 you would know this. This fact was bluntly stated in me2 with no form of confusion over it's fact what so ever.

Best boxing comic ever........but the guy drags the story for the fights too long. In the manga, a 6 round match would be writen about for 4-6 months.
