MGS might be able to make it if it wasn't for some of the cringe-inducing dialogue.

I honestly don't know why people say this all time.  there are maybe a couple scenes (usually dealing with the same characters) that are a bit overdone, but 99% of the time it is done very well.  I think my least favorite character is Otacon.

In MGS2, the Raiden and Rose dialogue is painful.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind sucks :?.  They took a decent idea and made it terribly boring and repetitive.

NaveedLife

You're missing his point entirely. Also, you're wrong. That's one of the best examples to give for modern film.

Nah i am not missing his point.  MGS has one of the best and most entertaining stories in story history (for me of course, since its an opinion).  He obviously enjoys some thigns I don't enjoy, since ESOTSM was pretty darn mediocre and a far cry from some games and movies out there.  Again, my opinion.

Nobody is doubting the quality of the story in MGS, I'm simply doubting how relavent it is to gaming. What good is a story to video games if most of it happens in cutscenes and not in gameplay ?

just curious but how old are you?

Age isn't always the factor for someone liking mediocre stuff.

It's also experience that changes one's opinion.

Without ever experiencing higher quality stuff they won't know what they are missing and their standards won't rise.

I wasn't talking to you

Both of them are embarrassingly poor "film makers", but that doesn't stop me from loving most of Kojimas games.  Only time he dropped the ball was MGS4, which was intentional.

I fully agree with you there, but I would say I have experienced plenty of quality stuff ;).  There are popular movies I hate and popular movies I love.  Same goes for lesser known movies (and other media).  Now I am not going to claim to have seen all the movies of old (or even new ones), and saying I am the best judge.  I can only offer my opinion from what I know.  My favorites are:

TV:

Lost

Dexter

Game of Thrones (growing on me more and more)

Scrubs

Seinfeld

Frasier

Homeland (so far)

Entourage

and more

Movies:

Taken 1

Nothing To Lose

Anger Management

The Departed

Slingblade

Shawshank Redemption

My Cousin Vinny

Aladin

Gran Torino

And I am sure so many more I am forgetting.

TO be honest I don't remember MGS2 well enough since it was my least favorite one, though still a very good game.  Definitely the most boring story and setting of the 4.

Look over the whole thread.  People certainly are questioning the quality of the story.  Hell it is what this thread is about.

In MGS2, the Raiden and Rose dialogue is painful.

A lot of the conversations between Raiden and Rose were based on actual conversations that Hideo Kojima had with his own wife. Yes, even the infamous repetitive "Do you remember what day it is tomorrow?" dialogues were based on actual episodes from Kojima's own life, recalling how he had forgotten all about their anniversary while working and under stress. If you found those dialogues painful or cringe-worthy, then that's probably because a lot of dialogues in real life are painful and cringe-worthy. And that's probably closer to how real people actually talk than the unrealistic "Hollywood speak" we've all become accustomed to. However, the translators and voice actors could have certainly done a better job executing the dialogues, but for his part, it's clear Kojima was attempting to make those conversations between Rose and Raiden believable and realistic.

Hard to decide when the both create award winning, world class entertainment. Heil68
Agreed. Both men make incredible movies. They should try developing games some time.

I think you should include Naughty Dog as well. The stories of the uncharted series are very interesting :)
