I think overall Gears will be more impressive looking. Like BAM! in your face.

But I don't think I will ever see a console game with huge environments as MGS4 while looking amazing at the same time. Especially Shadow Moses and and South America.

Just incredible. The little details especially like depth of field, realistic and perfect amount of bloom lighting, enormous variety in textures, and great art design.

From what ive seen of GeoW2, it has the edge. MGS4 has great looking character models, but its environments can be questionable at times, and its textures are distractingly bad.-DrRobotnik-

Yeah. But I honestly can think of a game that looks as amazing as MGS4 with those huge environments. That's what makes it so technically impressive. Some blurry textures yes, but the variety and art make up for it IMO. There are some high-res textures of course in certain areas, but some quality had to be sacrificed for all of the other amazing graphical effects.

And when you say environments can be questionable... Do you mean some texture resolution or the level design?

i didn't think mgs4 had better graphics than gears 1. the character models are plasticy and a little underdetailedcompared to gears 1 and the textures are pretty horriblemephisto_11

the character models for Gears 1 looked like action figures so dont get me started with that. Plasticy? its that even a word? Everything created by the Unreal Engine 3 looks like plastic too... Just look at UT3, even bricks are shiney and plastic-looking.

Exactly, I don't think I will ever see another game coming out this year that has such huge beautiful landscapes like MGS4 combined with impressive character models (GeOW models look like playdough).

We should wait till GeOW2 comes out to judge but judging so far, it looks like it's only a minor improvement over GeOW1.

I'm going to say Force Unleashed has the best visuals so far this generation. The environments are so richly detailed (especially the junk planet). Whether it's the lush forst world of Kashyyk, or the jagged shrapnel littered raxus Prime, or the pulsating giant plant world of Felucia; we are treated to a varied and diverse gaming environments. Bright tropical days, cool moonlit nights, and vibrant sunsets (Cloud City), this, THIS people, is what I mean when I talk about art direction, and this game in it's diversity, has some of the finest.

Plus there's impecabble character modelling with detailed facial animation which really imbues the virtual acting with authentic performnces for the complete cinematic experience.

I almost cried of happiness when I saw Shadow Moses. To see the main stage of one of the greatest games ever recreated with PS3 graphics warmed my heart up. And as for the graphical aspect, Gears has the textures, but MGS4 has the full package. It has sum great theatrical elements to it. The cutscenes and general gameplay world dont feel like "A day in the life of soldier X" it all feels like a diligently directed movie with great effects at the perfect time to add emphasis. Motion blur, Depth of field and so on are used to perfection.

I doubt there will be any game that is on par w/ MGS4 in the graphics department. I don't even think Killzone 2 will look as good as MGS4. Rafinator

Anyway, I don't think MGS4 really looks as good as people say. It's good looking, but something along the realms of bioshock when it came out or mass effect- good looking, but who really cares again?
