I think overall Gears will be more impressive looking. Like BAM! in your face.

But I don't think I will ever see a console game with huge environments as MGS4 while looking amazing at the same time. Especially Shadow Moses and and South America.

Just incredible. The little details especially like depth of field, realistic and perfect amount of bloom lighting, enormous variety in textures, and great art design.

MGS4 does not have depth of field.

Yes it does.

Anyway, I don't think MGS4 really looks as good as people say. It's good looking, but something along the realms of bioshock when it came out or mass effect- good looking, but who really cares again?

Proof? The only depth of field I noticed was during the cutscenes.

How can someone prove it to you if you don't notice it? Neither can you prove that it doesn't, but it surely does.

Taken from 1UP review:

The world itself looks stunningly realistic, with a vast array of detailed textures covering the surfaces, a multitude of objects (including Snake himself) casting lifelike shadows (including perfect self-shadowing), and highly effective use of depth-of-field and subtle motion blur which lends the whole experience a graphical blitzkrieg unlike anything currently on consoles.

Maybe you just don't notice it, but I don't know why :?. MGS4 is an amazing looking game and even more amazing considering how big the environments are and the action going on.

So true, but the moments in the entire game where the graphics had me going "OMFG! This game is off the Richtor!(sp)" were:

[spoiler]

1. The Europe level, the entire bike chase scene...that was just epic and I had my jaw on the ground the whole time.

2. The Microwave room, I dunno why but the way the Octocam looked while heating up was spectacular and I luved the split screen effect they used and the beautiful music (Bought the album for that one song :D )

3. The final battle with liquid. It was just so amazing looking

4. Shadow moses...dear god it looked great!

5. In the room with GW when the Metal Gear Mk.III is about to input the virus, its looks great!

6. The Akiba/Meryl marriage proposal, not beacuse it looked special but I just wanted to add it in because it was directed amazingly :D

realistic and perfect amount of bloom lighting

TREAL_Since

there is no 'realistic' amount of bloom lighting. bloom doesn't happen in real life, unless you have some sort of brutal eye condition or just got home from the optometrist and had drops put in. or if you just got out of a pool that was heavely chlorinated.. or if you're looking at the world through a crappy pre 80s/90s era camera..

bloom was originally used to simulate the optical oddities that would happen in photography and early film. for some reason stupid game devs use it everywhere now and it's annoying as hell imo. should only be used in games when a camera is being used imo.

Screenshots, that's how. But i'm guessing MGS4's depth of Field effect is so subtle i didnt notice it like i noticed in Crysis or Call of Duty 4.

Movie gear solid 4 looks on par with cod4 so Gears 2 crushes it.

MGS4 is also rendered at sub-HD resolutions and upscaled - that should immediately make it lose some points in terms of visual fidelity, but stubborn cows will argue the other side - the same stubborn cows that used to hammer 360 games for being less than 720p :P

heh, sorry. bloom is a bit of a pet peeve of mine :) also really annoys me when games use lens flare when you're in first person mode, again it's something that is unique to the camera, not the human eye.

I'd have to say Gears 2. MGS4 has it's moments where it looks very, very good, I just think from what I've seen Gears 2 will look very, very gooder.

Yeah. But I honestly can think of a game that looks as amazing as MGS4 with those huge environments. That's what makes it so technically impressive. Some blurry textures yes, but the variety and art make up for it IMO. There are some high-res textures of course in certain areas, but some quality had to be sacrificed for all of the other amazing graphical effects.

And when you say environments can be questionable... Do you mean some texture resolution or the level design?

Im talking just graphics on a technical level. Yeah, the MSG4 art direction is better, and i wasnt talking level design, just graphics. But i still think GeoW2 will look better.

Can't really tell, but MGS in my opinion

Gears rely's on alot of lighting to give the impression of good looking.

I understand :). My whole point was that you have to take the size of the game into consideration. I doubt we will see a game for a long time on consoles that looks as good as MGS4 with the same amount of action and large open environments.

I think Gears 2 looks better. But what if Epic made a game the size of MGS4? I don't know if it will be as impressive.

That grandpa fight was L.A.M.E.

What was so great about Shadow Moses?

That proposal scene was the most pointless, overdramatic thing I have scene. Kojima should be embarassed for putting that garbage in a video game.

Gears2 easily.. MGS4 has some pretty good char animations but surrounding enviroments seem bland & very low on detail (nothing special) If u really want a fair comparison.. KZ2 & RFOM2 r at the same visual caliber as GEOW2.

MGS4 has a more cinematic look to it and I dig it. GeoW2 I haven't seen enough but I guess it'll be better in the texture department, so all you lems can be happy. Overall, IDK yet but I feel that MGS4 has the best overall graphics package for games that are out right now.

MGS 4 looks way more realistic, but I prefer the way that Gears 2 looks. The fact is that people playing it seem to have forgotten what the real world looks like when they say that Gears of War looks realistic - it's not, it's stylised.

[QUOTE="Rafinator"]I doubt there will be any game that is on par w/ MGS4 in the graphics department. I don't even think Killzone 2 will look as good as MGS4.Juggernaut140

Killzone 2 already looks better than MGS4. Thats how good Killzone 2 looks. Gears of War 2 may look better than MGS4, but Killzone 2 craps on both of them in terms of graphics. And don't even get me started with animation, motion and lighting.

Stop acting like Killzone 2 has the greatest graphics ever because it's untrue

Show me where i said in the above sentence that Killzone 2 has the greatest graphics ever. Please do.

Yes.. According to gamespot it is

No gamespot said most technically impressive thats not the same as the best looking console game. If that's what they meant they would have said it so........
