If you wanna say other that's fine, but I think Bioshock and Half Life are the finest examples of story telling in a video game and I included MGS because it's often praised for being one of the best (wasn't a fan myself). Personally, I would give the nod to Half Life. While Andrew Ryan and the lot from Bioshock were very interesting, I actually got wrapped up into the plot for the Half Life series to the point where I cared about the characters. Everytime DOG burst onto the scene and saved the day I wanted to stand up and cheer and when the mysterious G-Man popped up I hung on his every word. It probably helps that Half Life leaves alot of questions unanswered so that there's something to hook you in for future installments.

Bioshock had a weak story, especially since it wasn't original in any way, nor were the characters endearing.

I'm going with other, but out of those 3, MGS.

If you're talking about the whole MGS series then MGS is definitely the better of the three. MGS1 had an awesome story, MGS2 had the most complex storyline I ever played (so much backstories for each character), MGS3's ending made me cry. And MGS4 made me salute to Snake's past ownage.

Possibly minor spoilers.

Setting =/= story. The plotline is a derivative of System Shock 2's, even the plot twist is essentially the same. You're thinking of atmosphere, which Bioshock accomplished fairly well (STALKER beats it easily though). The characters in Bioshock were weak as well, Atlas was poorly described and you didn't have much about him to go on so when his "family" blew up, I didn't really feel any emotion. He and the main character, who was unnamed and without development, were the only two real characters other than Ryan and Tenenbaum who were given a bit more emphasis in the game's story. Ryan was still rather one-sided and 2D throughout the game up until his demise, and Tenenbaum you never met face to face although the audio-logs helped distinguish her personality traits a bit better.

Really, it was nothing special in the story department.

So do you really think they lack depth or do you just think they lack depth compared to MGS? Also there more to a good story than just depth.........IMO the characters and pacing in HL are better than MGS. MGS has some cool characters but IMO theres a ton of wankers for such a seriously written story.........the fat guy on roller skates from MGS2, Raiden, Vamp.........

Half Life and Bioshock are better written.

Bioshock has a better atmosphere and has nice depth to it overall

Half Life has an excellent lore, and is quite interesting with the mystery surrounding the combine

MGS may be more convulted, but some of the themes and the imaginitive characters are what make it awesome

But if i had my pick. I would take MGS.....

I find the concept and actual plot and characters of MGS to be better, but I feel Half-Life's in-game storyelling is more impressive than the use of cutscenes and is more revolutionary.

I like the Half-Life story the most, the underlying concept is pretty simple, but I really like the way is has been executed. Episode Two also added a whole new level to it with the Advisors and setup for EP3.

Half Life - storytelling (quite possibly one the best in gaming) - its story is far from over, so I wouldn't give it the story title at all. While there is so much lore and stuff such as the setting and characters enhance the story, there are so many questions (unlike MGS4), its clear that we'll have to wait until ep3, and probably HL3 are released until any judgements can be confirmed.

MGS - out of the 3 the best story no doubt. Very impressive.

Bioshock - Well after you meet Andrew Ryan the story plummets into pure mediocre-ness, and sports one of the worst endings I had seen in a game last yea. It commited story suicide as far as im concerned.

Well its depends if you got the good ending whether it sucked or not, and everything is told in either voice over the radio, dairy entries, or communication directly.

Is this a joke thread? Not only does MGS beat those games by miles, it actually is the Mother of storytelling. Hideo Kojima is the true mastermind when it comes to storytelling.

We've argued in 2 other threads already, all of them on the same topic im tired its 2:30 am here.

Anyway... Mgs has better plot twists and historical background for the "fictional" parts of the story.

Half Life 2. The first one had an interesting story because I like Area-51/aliens/men in black kinda stuff. but HL2 totally blew me away. the Combine were a genuinely interesting enemy to learn about and fight. the story of Half Life 2 was the kinda 80's sci-fi aliens and freedom fighters and conspiracy stuff I've eaten up since I was a kid.

Bioshock was also good. but it didn't grab me like Half Life did. But it did further my love of a completely first person narrative.

Metal Gear . . . never been a fan of the story. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like a plot twist, but holy s***. there'es such a thing as one too many. I'm not sure which story was easier to follow, MGS's or that f****d up movie Memento. MGS3 was probably the best Story wise, since it was the first chronologically, so it somehow made more sence.

Half-life easy, because it has a story that begs you to looks into it's depth. Bioshock is rather shallow for a supposedly deep game, and MGS4 is just convoluted as ****.

Bioshock was good I guess, I prefer something like Mass effect or KOTOR though to the 3 you listed, but out of those 3 Bioshock as the best. MGS story is far too out there and all over the place :| I guess its just Japanese like because jrpg's are the same, although Vagrant Story had a killer story imo.

MGS wins. HL has a good story specially for a FPS and everything on it grows on you but that's it.

Bioshock's plot wasn't rly good, the story telling sucked (if you can call those diaries at least that) both endings were almost the same just opposite and I didn't like either one.

I would have to give the nod to Mgs, just by a bit over HL series. HL never really made be cry, was close though at the end of Ep. 2 :) But Mgs4 well lol I couldn't hold it in any longer lol. Love both and can't wait for ep. 3 or HL 3.

Want to know more about the HL series? You better be the rich and prominant to find out more about this world :)

Since I can say other games. I pick Final Fantasy 6. But since the line between fact and opinion had been broken it doesn't matter. People shouldn't be questioned on their opinion. Ifsomeonewanted to say Lego Star Wars then so be it. An odd choice, but still their opinion.

I don't know enough about the stories in Bioshock and Half-Life, but the story in MGS is just like Yahtzee put it: bananas. It's like a hyperactive 10 year old wrote it - "so there is this war... and a buch of SUPER SOLDIERS!! One can SHOOT ELECTRICITY! And another has CONTROL OF BEES!! And one has these really cool pistols and he can SPIN THEM FOR A REALLY LONG TIME!! Woohoo!! This is awesome!!"

You think they lack depth?

so what can you take away from half life?

that you didn't have to sit through 40 minute cut scenes that made no sense and actually got to play a good game?

the story was concise but it was there (unlike the convoluted mess that is MGS4, i mean do you really want to have played through all the previous games to even get a vague idea of whats even going on?)

i personally think they purposely kept the plot points to a minimum as not to fracture the gameplay, a lesson that MGS needs in spades, nay, truck fulls.

MGS personally, as to which the majority likes best i would say probably bioshock
