So, as it turns out, the Sinclair Solutions DLC for BioShock 2 was already in the disc all along. Now, while that should have been a pleasant surprise, one can't help but wonder why, if it is already included in the disc, you have to pay for it twice. A post at the official 2K forums attempts to explain.

Said the publisher's official statement:

"I noticed there was a bit of confusion about our Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack file size, and I wanted to clear things up for you. The way our engine and game structure works is that people need to have the exact same content for people to play together.

One of the challenges with post launch content for MP is that it can split the player base, and we want to avoid that whenever possible. For this content, creating the DLC package the way we did allowed for us to not split the player base – so whether you purchase the new content or not, you can still play with your friends.

I know some of you have strong beliefs about DLC, and I'm not here to sway your opinion or convince you to buy our stuff - if you like what we're offering, I hope you get it and enjoy it. If it's not your speed, enjoy BioShock 2 as we released it.

I want to let you know that DLC is not interfering with our patching capabilities, which are a top priority and are still being actively worked on. We're committed to supporting you and making BioShock 2 the best experience possible.

I hope this clears up a lot of the questions and confusion in this thread!"

And there you have it. Are you sold with their explanation?

 I can't help but to think that this is a load of crap what with this becoming rather common these days.

If people are so willing to buy DLC, why not just save some money by not hosting servers to distribute the DLC and just put it on the disc? That's the way I see it.

I actually think the first game this gen to have content on the disc sold as DLC was either NFS Carbon, or the 360 version of NFS Most Wanted.

I'm sure MS urged them to (as said by Valve/Epic/Bizzare...etc. have said). I have to agree that MS started the microtransaction crap.

This is what I argued companies would do back in the day...but I was attacked by an onslaught of fanboys angry that I brought it up. Now, 5-8 years later, here I am reading about this crap.

Where are those DLC is awesome fanboys from those days. Man, I can't believe 2K jumped in on this, but then again, I can. It's the future.

No its already on the disk, but locked. When you pay for the DLC it just downloads a small file that unlocks the content to play it. So your essentially buying a key to a safe you already own.

I think it means they're lying their asses off. They're saying how people who purchase and don't purchase the DLC would have problems playing with each other if they didn't put the content on the disc. If player 1 who purchased the DLC and has abilities that player 2's game doesn't recognize that would be a problem. Too bad it all seems shady to me, especially since they could just patch the game but only unlock the DLC for people who actually pay for it. Thats what I think anyway.

halo 3 had that very same problem. In halo 3 if you didn't have a certain map pack you couldn't play most ranked game modes and you are pretty much forced to buy it if you want to continue playing ranked matches in that mode. You were pretty much cut off from half of what the game has to offer

Halo 2 had mappacks for extra charge as well iirc. But I doubt MS started this trend.

But if we are talking about content already on disc that you simply have to "unlock", I'm pretty sure that started this gen.

Pretty sure that was MS/Bungie's plan. People love matchmaking in Halo, and in order to play they would HAVE to buy those map packs. I doubt if it was a problem with an engine, but more of a money decision.

It was the same for Halo 2 except the maps for it became free after a couple of weeks/months.

Thats different from what your saying.. your talking about not being able to find games because people are playing maps you don't have, they are saying that if you had a map pack, and I didn't, our accounts couldn't find each other, even if we where going to play a map we both have, which is bs because no one developer seems to have that problem. I never dl map packs and I can still find people (including people on my friends list) who do dl them.

I have mixed feelings about this. One buying the game already possesses the DLC but is still forced to pay an unlocking fee for it. That's ****** up although now the update doesn't eat up HDD space.

This is only the beginning. I'm waiting for the first company to charge me $59.99 just for a single player experience, and another $15-20 for Multiplayer And then some more for maps. STOP TAKING PART IN YOUR OWN ABUSE!

Bioshock was sole singleplayer experience, drive by its story and narrative. It didn't need multiplayer, yet 2K added it anyway. Those resources could have gone into better improving the campaign.

Dead Space 2 seems to be taking the same unfortunate route.

The campaign was developed by 2K Marin, 2K Australia and 2k China, with Arkane Studios as level design assistance.

The multiplayer however, was developed by Digital Extremes, so 2K did what they could with the campaign, and I liked it a lot.

I also can't see why is it such a problem to pay 5 dollars for something you like. You people are making it sound like someone is forcing you to buy it. Don't buy it if you don't want to, but I myself will gladly pay 5 dollars to continue supporting the developers.

DLC i like = stuff developed after the games release that, for a reasonable fee, will keep me coming back to the game. Things like map packs, expansions etc.

DLC i don't like = stuff finished in time to ship with the game (thus including anything actually ON THE DISC) but are withheld to scam more money out of us. This should be illegal, and if a console manufacturer banned publishers from doing what BIoshock2 have done, i would actually buy all multiplatforms on that console. There can be no justification for it aside from greed, and, thanks to news of this i suggest anyone who hasn't purchased bioshock 2 already only does so 2nd hand as a petty way of getting back at them.

I also can't see why is it such a problem to pay 5 dollars for something you like. You people are making it sound like someone is forcing you to buy it. Don't buy it if you don't want to, but I myself will gladly pay 5 dollars to continue supporting the developers.

You already bought it once. Why should you have to pay $5 more to get it again?

MS did start with charging for stuff that should be free though less game related: pictures for your avatar and wallpapers. This is stuff you can find free on the interent it is as crazy as paying for stuff that's already on the disc.

Bioshock was sole singleplayer experience, drive by its story and narrative. It didn't need multiplayer, yet 2K added it anyway. Those resources could have gone into better improving the campaign.

Dead Space 2 seems to be taking the same unfortunate route.

A good point, I maybe did buy the data, but I'm still missing one link, and thats the "key" we need to download. So no... I didn't buy it all, and although it may seem unfair for some, then I suggest you don't buy it, if some people hate it that much to boycott the next release here is a simple suggestion do not buy it:)

I am paying those 5 dollars more to support them, then to get the content.

And you see absolutely nothing wrong with that? It's like going to a car dealership, buying a car, but you can't turn on the radio, because the dealer decides hey i'll just put this in here, and charge people extra. There is nothing wrong with that? You bought the disk, you deserve everything on that disk. If you gladly give away your money for this bs, then you a part of the problem. My $60 went towards the development of that content, but 2K is trying to double dip and squeze every penny they can. Well FU 2K and all developers that do this.

no ms invented paid dlc, stop trying to deny it. ms stops devs from releasing free dlc.

and sony stops devs from releaseing entire games unless it gets more content...I.E when the game is close to finish and going green light for gold.

More on the microsoft first charged for DLC.
This might say Microsoft was the first, but logically its unsound since there were other services that charged for games, and A game is content and therefor is downloadable, even the article it self admits that any content released as downloadable is refered to as DLC.

atari 2600's gameline service which cost money to download games to play (rent in this matter actually)...then you have Sega channel which offered *earthworm jim special edition* which is exactly like DLC but is a stand alone. Then you have the various PC games that used DLC which later would charge for it in the form fo stand alone packs that usually had a more organized part to it or GOTY editions that had it.
Battlezone gold, unreal tournaments...ect

So no Microsoft was not the first to charge for content all ready on the disc, and they certainly weren't the first to charge for downloadable content either, Either online, Or in goty editions or gamepack forms.

So what's better? Getting MORE stuff for FREE Or getting less stuff and getting charged for it later?
