Bioshock is still over rated imo (edited)...

It feels like you are led/forced through levels in a totally linear way. Having played it for longer now I realise it's not quite as linear, but somehow it steels feels a little tooo forced, and I don't think the design choice to have lots of dark really helps you appreciate the world properly or want to wander around too much to explore the work because it is kinda hard to know where you are going with all the darkness and stuff.

I didn't feel drawn into or connected to the story or characters at all. It's a little bit more interesting now, a few hours in (fought a couple Big Daddies, fought the medical boss guy etc), but it's still not that compelling to me.

You can't really see what is going on or where you are going half the time. Still pretty much the case. I just don't like the overall darkness and inability to see a lot of the levels, and I think the areas are still mostly too small and corridor like, which makes the game feel more restricted and linear than it probably is.

The bloodlooks rubbish. Still true (talking about the bloodthatsplats when you shoot an enemy)but I can live with it, just.

I was constantly picking up items but never gave a hoot what they were for and the game never made me feel like I should give a hoot. Getting a bit more interesting but really only the power ups like electricity, fire, telekinesis etc, not all the other stuff that still isn't that interesting to me yet.

Trying to shoot the characters doesn't feel very satisfying when they always do that stupid lunge at you. Still the same and it just doesn't feel like you can dodge them much or use cover ****tactics to pop out take shots and hide again etc. You just take hits until you kill them, most of the time. I prefere it in games like Doom, Halo etc, where if you are good you can pretty much avoid any kind of shot from any character.

The Irish guy that keeps talking to you is bloody annoying. He's not as bad at first but I would rather he wasn't there at all or at least that I could turn him off. He just pulls me out of the game and I don't actually get why he is there anyway. (must have missed the reason at the start).

etc

I really think this is one of those examples of a game that is over rated. It's okay, and design wise (in terms of the world and some of the story stuff etc) it is really good, but it still doesn't feel that great to actually play, which is not a good thing. This game doesn't touch ****cs like Goldeneye, Halo or even the original Doom games in my opinion (in terms of sheer fun and game flow etc).

It still say it does not deserve the high scores it has been getting.

Right now I would give it:

Graphics =9 (beautiful art 5tyle far but too hard toreally see and appreciate much of the world properly, or enjoy moving through it,and the blood and a few other bits are a bit rubbish)

Gameplay = 6.5 (It's not really that fun to actually play but the story and progression does make you want to play on, or maybe its because you guys have hyped it so much that I'm just waiting for it to blow me away, and for the amazing stuff to happen)

Oeverall = 7.5 (I live by the gameplay over graphics mantra, although I do love great graphics and want them, but in this case it's more about the looks and the story than the gameplay and fun, and that I don't advocate ever)

Other stuff I can't be bothered scoring.

I think that's a bit better...

I didn't enjoy it enough to play it past the first hour or so. I shouldn't have to play it for anywhere near that time to start to enjoy it, so if it does actually get better in some magical way then it doesn't really matter.

All my friends agreed too that it was crap and way overrated.

way overrated? i understand that it is your opinion but to think it is "waaay" overrated means you are expecting too much out of it. It is a great game and whether you like it or not, you should at least realize that it is a quality game.

We were all just like WTF. This is utter crap. Why are people bigging this up. It just plain boring and souless and dull and just so blah.

If this was how all videogames were I could see a future where they never became mainstream or appealed to anyone other than geeks who really don't know anything about having fun in a game world and really being able to play around with the experience etc.

Just not feeling it in the slightest...

Over rated to you perhaps. To me I believe it is under rated here at gamespot with it easily deserving a 9.5. I have gone through the game twice, gotten both endings, and have 2 achievements left to get. The levels are in NO WAY linear. Because if you want to know the FULL story of bioshock (which is a damn good one) You need to search around for diaries in areas that you absolutely don't have to go through and you pretty much will miss your first time around. I'm sorry that you can't enjoy bioshock for what it is, and that is a truley great game.

YES.

I would think if a game isn't any fun after 1 hour of play that it really doesn't deserve any more attention.

Great games like Street Fighter, Halo, Goldeneye, Super Mario World, F-Zero, Counter Strike etc, all draw you in within the first few minutes and they are fun to play right away.

That is a good game to me...

-The campaign and more importantly the story is far superior to the three FPS games you mentioned. two of which are known/remembered primarily for their multiplayer and one of which is known simply because it was one of the first FPS.

-Going back to Doom, do you remember how big a pain in the ass it was navigating the last Doom game? How dark it was? And you're complaining about this in Bioshock?

-Getting lost and not knowing exactly where to go is kind of the point of the game. You're stranded in an underwater city, in mostly darkness. You're not supposed to know where to go. It adds something called realism. And there is this thing called brightness on your tv. You can adjust it....

-And for the total moron, there is this thing called an OBJECTIVE ARROW, it shows you where to go. Holds your hand like your mommy does when you go out in public.

-To get drawn into the story, you actually have to pay attention to what is going on. You know, listen to what that bloody irish guy keeps talking about, and what those recorded messages play whenever you luckily stumble upon 1.

-You're right. Throwing flaming bodies at enemies, throwing barrels at enemies, freezing enemies, shocking enemies while they are standing in water, lighting enemies on fire, getting headshots with a magnum, sniping with a crossbow, and laying down proximity mines is not satisfying.

When everybody says a game is good, and the game has strong sales...guess what? The game is good.

Now I understand what type of FPS gamer you are.... you want a run and gun game with no in depth story What about RPG games? Most of them are not great for the first hour but get better over time. Bioshock is a FPS/RPG hybrid.

Well, it sounds as if you are much more interested in a shoot now, ask questions later type game....such as Halo. The game has a great story, but what most people are interested in is sniping their buds. That's fine, and it's what some people expect from a game.

I think Bioshock is refreshing. The way they used the environment, the sounds, the setting, the story, everything to get across a certain mood and to tella compelling story is just fantastic. This is even blatantly clear in the demo, and that's an impressive feat in itself....getting across that kind of production value in less than 10 minutes. The whole game just reeks of intense thought and planning.

TC, would you kindly give the game a chance, atleast past the first hour  The game is far from soul-less, in fact, the game's story concept and themes are outstanding that you will get attached to the characters. Just give yourself the chance to find and listen to the audio logs and continue playing. It will all make sense to you as you play and by the end you'll just think back and say what a great single player experience this was.

If the designers messed up the first hour, and therefore first impression, so badly then I really don't have any faith that they suddenly figured out how to make the game fun or interesting after that first hour.

Do you realise you can complete entire games in that time. Great games. Some of the best game ever made...

Your opinion is yours to have, but to list Halo as a better game, is well, sad I say. The single player experience is greater in Bioshock then it is in Halo, you actually have a story, instead of human race dying, one man to save human race from great alien invasion. The game is more than the sum of its parts.

I think the fact that Bioshock is the second highest rated game of all time at gamerankings is more than enough reason to play past the 1st hour. Also the first hour of Bioshock is probably the best opening since Half Life 1, if notever. Now would you kindly go and play the game for a meaningful amount of time before posting something as ignorant as your OP.

It was just some random irish guy talking crap all the time and getting on my nerves and lots of items that I didn't give a crap about picking up and characters that meant nothing to me.

Maybe some people got drawn into that but maybe they would have been better of watching a film or reading a book, if all the good stuff comes from picking up diarys etc...

The actual game was just boring and unispiring and I have done it a million times before in many many far superior games...

[QUOTE="whoisryanmack"]I think bioshock is appreciated must more true to the vision if you stop thinking of it as an FPS, and begin looking around and seeing it as an interactive experience. This isn't damage control, I don't really care one way or the other if you don't like it....but I think you'd get alot more out of it if you would try and appreciate what they were going for with it. Few games released EVER, have the kind of production value that Bioshock has. It's a classic movie in which you are the main character. freeload

I'm sure there are many people out there who for whatever reasons will enjoy it, but to me, as a game experience, it was just tedious and boring and forced and almost souless.

I just do not get how this game is being so hyped or how it has been getting such high marks.

This game has more soul than just about any game ever made. Games that can compare are games like Shadow of the Colossus.

And you're wrong to judge it based on 5 minutes of gameplay. This is not a fighting game, where you can judge the graphics, gameplay, and fighting system (the most important things in a fighting game) within the first half hour of playing. This game is like a movie. A movie in which the ending is the whole point of the film. You can't watch a movie for 5 minutes and call it crap, especially if it actually has a plot that develops. Similarly you can't judge Bioshock on the first 20 minutes of the single player campaign. You either are not following the plot or can't understand it. Even people that don't care for the type of game that Bioshock is will admit that its a good game, just not for them.

If you think BioShock's "leading" was bad... you should play some other console FPS's. And at least in BioShock, you can turn off the "casual" arrow (as I call it).

It feels like you are led/forced through levels in a totally linear way.

tomarlyn

You didn't finish the game did you?

I didn't enjoy it enough to play it past the first hour or so. I shouldn't have to play it for anywhere near that time to start to enjoy it, so if it does actually get better in some magical way then it doesn't really matter.

All my friends agreed too that it was crap and way overrated.

We were just totally dissapointed...

Thats just as bad as people bashing the Wii after one session of Wii Sports at a party.

You can get through entire games in that time.

I hardly think it is too short a time to appreciate if a game plays crap or not...

The game is linear for the first hour. Then the game opens up.

gamerankings.com it should have a 94% average. Thought oblivion was a much better game, and so was half life 2.

I think the best part of this thread is this kid has no idea how funny the "would you kindly" responses are, and sadly he never will if he doesn't finish the game.

Oh and unless you've played through System Shock 2 at least three times, you have no right to truly criticize this game's flaws, as it is truly the only game that can really be compared to this one. Deus Ex is close...

just face it, he made up his mind about Bioshock before he even played it, now he is just looking for attentionTheBigDrat
Amen. He is probably just a sad cow that is pissed that it is not on PS3 yet, or is a sheep that is blinded by the graphics.

NavigatorsGhost

I said Doom and not Doom 3 because I also thought Doom 3 was pretty rubbish too, in a very similar way to Bioshock, with many of the same game design and gameplay issues...

[QUOTE="freeload"] I was constantly picking up items but never gave a hoot what they were for and the game never made me feel like I should give a hoot.kankthetank

Speaking of which, what were the Splicer's organs for?

They're like first aids.

So how do you use them?

[QUOTE="TheJustin"]Over rated to you perhaps. I'm sorry that you can't enjoy bioshock for what it is, and that is a truley great game.freeload

After reading this post, its been determined that this game is beyond you. Somebody get this kid a copy of Smash Brothers or Mario Kart. Thank you for not playing this game.

Its like a teenager drinking single malt scotch to get drunk. A complete waste.
