It feels like you are led/forced through levels in a totally linear way. Having played it for longer now I realise it's not quite as linear, but somehow it steels feels a little tooo forced, and I don't think the design choice to have lots of dark really helps you appreciate the world properly or want to wander around too much to explore the work because it is kinda hard to know where you are going with all the darkness and stuff.
I didn't feel drawn into or connected to the story or characters at all. It's a little bit more interesting now, a few hours in (fought a couple Big Daddies, fought the medical boss guy etc), but it's still not that compelling to me.
You can't really see what is going on or where you are going half the time. Still pretty much the case. I just don't like the overall darkness and inability to see a lot of the levels, and I think the areas are still mostly too small and corridor like, which makes the game feel more restricted and linear than it probably is.
The bloodlooks rubbish. Still true (talking about the bloodthatsplats when you shoot an enemy)but I can live with it, just.
I was constantly picking up items but never gave a hoot what they were for and the game never made me feel like I should give a hoot. Getting a bit more interesting but really only the power ups like electricity, fire, telekinesis etc, not all the other stuff that still isn't that interesting to me yet.
Trying to shoot the characters doesn't feel very satisfying when they always do that stupid lunge at you. Still the same and it just doesn't feel like you can dodge them much or use cover ****tactics to pop out take shots and hide again etc. You just take hits until you kill them, most of the time. I prefere it in games like Doom, Halo etc, where if you are good you can pretty much avoid any kind of shot from any character.
The Irish guy that keeps talking to you is bloody annoying. He's not as bad at first but I would rather he wasn't there at all or at least that I could turn him off. He just pulls me out of the game and I don't actually get why he is there anyway. (must have missed the reason at the start).
etc
I really think this is one of those examples of a game that is over rated. It's okay, and design wise (in terms of the world and some of the story stuff etc) it is really good, but it still doesn't feel that great to actually play, which is not a good thing. This game doesn't touch ****cs like Goldeneye, Halo or even the original Doom games in my opinion (in terms of sheer fun and game flow etc).
It still say it does not deserve the high scores it has been getting.
Right now I would give it:
Graphics =9 (beautiful art 5tyle far but too hard toreally see and appreciate much of the world properly, or enjoy moving through it,and the blood and a few other bits are a bit rubbish)
Gameplay = 6.5 (It's not really that fun to actually play but the story and progression does make you want to play on, or maybe its because you guys have hyped it so much that I'm just waiting for it to blow me away, and for the amazing stuff to happen)
Oeverall = 7.5 (I live by the gameplay over graphics mantra, although I do love great graphics and want them, but in this case it's more about the looks and the story than the gameplay and fun, and that I don't advocate ever)
Other stuff I can't be bothered scoring.
I think that's a bit better...
