I'm really tired of all this "The 360 uses outdated hardware because it doesnt have Blu Ray" or "This game is only possible on Blu Ray"
Lets look at some facts:
1) Blu Ray is too slow at 2x to stream data off the disc hence the installs
2) A lot of 1st party and exclusive 3rd party games require installs that are up to 5 gb in size for many games
-Hot Shots Golf
-MGS4
Multiplat:
-DMC4
-SC4
-GTA4
etc etc
3) If you've played MGS4 you know how many load screens there are, there are load screen for MENUS. Also:
-About 20 mins worth of installs 4.5 gb of space used up
-Installs in between every chapter even after you've gone through them once
4) MGS4 was confirmed to be about 33gb from someone who used a pc Blu Ray drive:

5) Remember FF13"only possible on Blu Ray"?
In reality 2x Blu Ray is gimped. Sorry but thats the truth. If it was at 4x it would be an advantage. But at 2x there is a trade off with Blu Ray, installations and hard drive space or getting up and changing a disc every 12 hours. I'd rather change discs.

The same way u feel about bluray not being needed is the same I feel about those saying it isnt needed. I mean seriously man how can any of u sit back and say bluray isnt needed if u havent even worked on a game for the ps3 or even worked on any game period. Its all opinion but in the end only devs will know the real fact if bluray is needed or not, not us consumers. Were just the ones who buy the games and enjoy them or hate them. I can agree that the threads saying bluray is needed are annoying but we can also say the same for this thread and many other threads saying bluray isnt needed because like I said before. Unless u have worked with the ps3 and are a dev and know that bluray isnt needed then what u have to say about bluray is just your opinion. Leave the bluray is not need or needed to the people who actually worked with it to do the talking.
...Wii uses a regular sized DVD9s (though with proprietary formatting).

...No, sadly, the Wii uses DVD5's, bue can use DVD9's. SSBB was the first and only game to use DVD9, and BOY what a ruckus that ended up being. So many Wii's weren't ready for the TECH, remember that?
A lot of the big PS3 games have a lot of copied data on the disks to account for the slow disk reading speed from Blu-Ray, not to mention any game on the PS3 can fit on a DVD9 - all it takes is compression. uncompressed audio, really MGSIV? Is that needed? No.Stevo_the_gamer
There are other PS3 games that are HUGE and don't require installs too.
Bottomline, it's a nice feature, for SOME devs.
As a matter of fact, we don't need DVD's, we could still be using CD's, if you want to push the envelope.

Eh, if the game doesn't need the space, why bother with the expense? And yes I remember the whole SSBB/MarioKart (yes, MK is dual layer too) fiasco... it was apparently caused by "contamination on the lens". I also seem to recall Nintendo saying they'll fix any buggy systems for free, even if they're out of warranty.
Of course my main point was that the Wii uses regular sized discs, which apparently the guy I was quoting was unaware off.

Some games are still being released on CDs.And some cool games are small enough that several of them could fit on a single CD.Funny. What about the RAM limitations? Now that's ironic. John Carmack decides this thread in favour of Bluray.

Well, that's just silly of him. Why would he think that. I don't get some posters here, they guess without even bothering to use Google...even a little bit. We all can't be 100%, but something as simple as looking up the FORMAT the Wii uses? Silly.
if you ask me it isn't really... you just get more installing. way to go around disk swapping which the 360 hardly has at all anyway. sure you get 7.1 sound but in the end there's not that much difference from 5.1.crunchUK
I suppose your one of those people who doesn't care about sound at all, if you need a surround system you'll just buy one of those cheap 5.1 all in one system for no money and doesn't know what real sound is? lol, just guessing.
But sure you can here a difference with 2 more speakers behind you, while you one on each side of you and 3 infront, instead of 3 infront of you and 2 behind ..
But i'm just guessing..
Anothe thing is, alot of people got 6.1 or 7.1 systems, including me, and i sure the heck would like to take some mroe advantage of that.

[QUOTE="FragTycoon"]"games will never use that much space"
I love how history repeats itself.

Multiple cartridge games didn't work back in the day and compression technology wasn't where it was today. Its a completely different story today. Show me one game that couldn't be done on DVD9. AND DONT SAY MGS4
Metal Gear solid 4 and I didn't even say MGS4[QUOTE="mephisto_11"]Blu-Ray is useless, and it's not in the system I chose, so I don't like it right now. I repeat, Blu Ray is useless.superjim42

I don't know this Carmack fellow, but Mephistounderscoreeleven is THE Premier world renown expert on Game Development, and makes amazing games under that alias.
John Carmack? Get outta here, sounds like a phony name.
Nice Try.

you are being sarcastic right?Mephy (We go back, Mephy is what I call Mephistounderscoreeleven, or as you know him Mephisto_11) singlehandedly founded Id software, and also is a part time pilot. The dude is amazing, and I can't wait to play Doom4.
Who knows their $H1#, Mephy or this Carmack dude? We know the answer, and it's the TC.
Secondly, What the HELL is sarcasm?
