Ya, Blu-ray is the new standard. It's rumored that in 4 to 5 years there could be another format though. So the PS3 may be the first and last system we see with Blu-ray, we'll see.-Wheels-

Sony's tradition seems to be to change formats with each generation.

With the original Playstation, they had CD's.

With the PS2, they used DVDs

With the PS3, they are using BDs.

Who knows what will come next?

[QUOTE="naruto7777"]dvd is still betternVidiaGaMer

how, besides price

Blu-Ray is way better higher res, better sound quality, and higher capacity. DVD fails in everything besides price.

No game on BluRay has put the 360 to shame like Sony said it would. DVD hasn't failed.

MGS4 is the perfect example of putting the 360 to shame.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFp_-FtHUG8

Really? I just loved installing to the hard drive the minute I unwrapped it. I also loved mini installs in the middle of the motorcycle chase and the Chase onboard Drebin's Stryker. Oh teh power of BooRay. That disc was more movie than game. Use a different example where there was actually gameplay. BTW, that could have definitely been done on the 360. Don't see how Kojima used 50GB. Also where are the native 1080p games. Shouldn't BluRay have made that a standard coupled with the PS3's raw powah?! Sony sold the cows a bill of goods that they just accepted as gospel. My shiny PS3 is relegated to being a Blu ray player. Nothing compelling. Plus they delayed the SOCOM beta. I'm really pissed.

Watch a commercial advertising new DVD releases. Blu-ray is almost always advertised with DVD.Evolved_One

It was the same way we had it when VHS was exiting the scene.

Remember?

Monsters Inc on DVD and VHS on such and such date.

Then later we had The Little Mermaid (15 year anniversary) on DVD on such and such date.

Now we have The Nightmare before Christmas on DVD and Blu-Ray disc on August 26th.

I guess you haven't heard all the RAGE about that game involving John Carmack......

Quite familiar with the Carmack interview and no cow should bring it up because he dissed the PS3 big time. There were no glowing praises. He only got on MS's butt because of disc licensing and the game hasn't been released yet so MS might accomodate him. So what, a few textures on a rock out of view might be blurry?! Did you really listen to the interview?

While HD-DVD has lost, BD has NOT won

BD sales have been lower since HD-DVD dropped out

FirstDiscovery

Hmm.

Have any links to back that up? Doesn't seem very likely. :?

There still isn't too much selection on Blu-Ray. I'm always having to rent DVDs from netflicks because some movies just aren't on blu-ray.

Yes but this could be the start of things. Agree or disagree! Games ported as Multi plats initially created for PC will translate easier to PS3 due to Blu ray capacity to contain the space requirements of these future PC games. Agree or disagree! There is a good chance that Blue ray will be a way larger advantage to PS3 in 12-24 months. Agree or disagree!

If you disagree with any of those point please feel free to counter them.

I don't see how anyone could agree with your post. Most dev says it's easier to port to the 360 because it's easier to work with. The PS3 gives headaches. I'm not gonna agree or disagree with your speculation. 12-24 months. This is Waiting.

I still haven't see more than 5 or 6 bluray movies at any of the 5 walmarts with 30 miles of me. DVD is still dominating.farrell2k

Really? Where do you live? Each Walmart, Target, and Best Buy near my house all have extensive Bly-ray sections. Maybe it's less the further away you are from a major cities.

Blu-ray moveis are fantastic. Sadly I can't say the same for the prices :(. Once software and hardware prices come down it should take off, just like DVD did.

Price is everything. But it wont take off like dvd because unlike dvd not everyone has the hardware (HDTV's) to take advantage of it.

Yes. While Carmack doesn't like the PS3 from a development standpoint he did say that Blu-Ray will allow higher res textures for Rage, resulting in a slightly better looking game.

Anyone that argues DVD is better than BR is crazy. I don't know what exactly Sony said as far as BR is concerned, but we have already seen it's obvious advantages over DVD. We will continue to see them in the upcoming years.

Prices will come down. HDTVs are starting to become a standard as well (slowly). BR can only go up. No matter how long it takes it will eventually happen. The world will be in an HD craze just like us gamers are.

I honestly have no idea how well blue rays are selling.I love blue ray but i still dont buy them because there more costly than dvds.I bought my ps3 over a year ago and i still only own one blue ray movie and its spiderman 3 that i got with my 40 gig. When they get the prices down to around 19 dollars like dvds then ill definatly start buying more blue ray movies. As of now im content with buying my movies on dvd.

Oh...you mean the same game that's coming out on the PC, PS3 AND 360. Yeah, what about it? Multiple disc doesn't make a game bad. Not one bit. and beside this......

"However, Carmack shut down many Sony loyalists' blooming braggadocio by saying that while the Blu-ray disc is clearly his preferred medium, the 360 is a superior piece of hardware for developers."

says something about the PS3's hardware as well. Don't act like the PS3's BR tech is even enough to save it from it's massive faults in other areas of design.

this year BR made a significant step forward and its getting more shelf space in stores i buy games/movies from... i think its doing good... anyone with some sense surely knew that BR wouldnt become the main format in a year or two.. it takes time, but support for BR is really strong so who knows if prices for BR movies & stand alone BR units get cheaper it will probably become the format of choice in 2 yrs time...

as for game we still have to see devs taking advantage of the BR's larger capacity... but its ok since PS3 is getting a lot of quality games lately, its just a matter of time (as always) :)

People forget Blu-ray is an enabler of additional content, not the cause. The reason most Blu-ray games only use the storage for less compression is because of the additional content development costs.

Content development costs is what's causing more games to go cross platform, for a platform exclusive you are limited in how much additional content you can put in a Blu-ray game. Some people may think PS3 games will one day have 25-50GB of content, for that to happen that game needs to be able to make enough money to justify that additional content development cost; which on a single platform is unlikely.

DVD became standard for gaming because of SPACE!!! sure the game could have been done on 5 Cd's ( Blue dragon 5 DVDs lol) But yet the Dev's picked to use DVD instead why is that ???

The thing is that Blu- Ray will replace DVD because of the same reason DVD replaced Cd's SPACE !!!

Seems like it is moving slightly slower than DVD's did at similar points in their lifetime. No doubtly due to Blu-rays reliance on HDTV's. I agree that it will still be years until DVD is dead.

I was having fun. Since you wanna get series, tell me what game has put the 360 to shame. Like I said, a very very very small percentage of PS3 games are native 1080p. Where's the BluRay advantage? MGS4 on teh 50GBeez, was impressive, but not mindblowing. Why was I loading in the middle of the motorcycle chase, the drebin chase and moving from one block to another block while sneaking around for the agent? I keep seeing words like "will" and "good chance" or "wait". Fact of the matter is, Sony said this stuff pre launch and we still have nothing compelling. Both systems are equally matched and there is no compelling arguement that BluRay has had a dramatic impact on games so far this gen.

Thats exactly how DVDs started. I have watched as in Target and Best Buy Blu ray shelfs turned to a large area for blu rays. I remember having to look hard for the DVDs I wanted when I bought my PS2.

exaclty.

If no one really cared about space then games would still be on CD's.

NinjaMunkey01

Space is important, though I think PS3 users are way over blowing the need for a capacity improvement like Blu-ray. My guess is because it is something 360 doesn't have; therefore like any platform exclusive feature it will be hyped to high heaven.

Today all Blu-ray has done for PS3 is lower compression and sometimes a few extra tidbits, there is no "4 times as much content" games like some PS3 users boast. It will be a requirement one day, but not today or any time soon.

BluRay == not worth it. I have a 110" projector and a good quality DVD leaves me plenty satisfied. HD DVD (when it was in) and BluRay really don't make the picture *that* much better. At least not worth buying a new player for the mainstream. It took HDTVs a long time to take off...and they are still not in most homes. Look for BluRay to take just as long, but the problem will be that digital distribution will trump it.

Dish TV has 1080p on-demand videos. The difference between a typical bluray and typical 1080p digital distribution movie won't be noticed on most consumer HDTVs (especially with most of them being 720P sets).

I agree the picture is great on planet earth, BUT the version I got had some british guy talking so it sucked. Nothing against the brits, but I like the sigourney weaver reading much much much better. I just can't listen to another narrator on that documentary.

[QUOTE="farrell2k"]I still haven't see more than 5 or 6 bluray movies at any of the 5 walmarts with 30 miles of me. DVD is still dominating.Dilrod

i haven't been to the 5 walmarts within 30 miles of you, but someone tells me you're lying...His name is Mr common sense...

Exactly. I was in a little rural town today of less than 2000 people, and even their Wal Mart had dozens of blu ray titles for sale. Easily 50+ movies.

do they all work at walmart?

DD needs alot more to "trump it". Like everyone having broadband internet or higher, lack of caps on downloads like Comcast is trying to implement, large cheap HDD, etc..

On demand videos has been around for a while, well before HD or even DVD. Those only hurt the renting market, not the owning market, and as for most consumers, it will not be easy to convince them to store all their movies on a HDD and use their computer to download them with an internet connection to your player.

People like the ease of having a TV, a player and a disk and you have movie watching. Not a TV, a player, interent, HDD, computer, etc.

I disagree DD is starting to give more options to consumers. Like saving to a hard drive and playing whenever you want. But the real option for bluRay is in personal home videos that are in HD. As personal HD camcorders take off they'll want to keep the full resolution and store them on bluray. Then they'll need to play those movies on their TVs. Personal camcorders will drive bluray sales into the mainstream more than people wanting to buy movies for a 2nd time.

Until and only until the market is saturated with HD tvs will blu ray be the replacement for dvds. Until then, DVD is still king.

still a ripoffjohnnyblazed88
I agree. Its an irrelevant format until it becomes a lot cheaper. I can play BR movies on my HDTV, but I dont like getting ripped off so I can watch Robo cop in HD.

as far as video, it is worth every penny, its even stupid to compare it to DVD...

but for gaming, you are right we didnt see much of an impact besides MGS4. anyway, Sony did what they could, now the ball is in the developers side, the technology is there and proven to be excelent, all they need to do is take advantage out of it.
