I guess its a good thing I was never sucked into the hype, then. I played the game and enjoyed the hell out of the sp. None of the things you listed made the level design any worse, the Arbiter any less of a character, or the bosses any worse. If Halo 2 did'nt have an "X factor" then Halo 3 definately did'nt have it. That game single-handedly shattered my faith in Bungie.TheGrat1
I whole heartedly disagree. Halo 3's campaign missions were way more fun than anything in Halo 2. The only thing that stops it from becoming as legendary as the original Halois the change in writers which gave it piss poor storytelling. Oh, and the stupid level called "Cortana". Apart from that, the mission designs are a helluva lot of fun everything is polished to the last degree. If you play the original Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3in succession, Halo 2 stands out as the red headed child. In fact, I remember playing for the first time on that glorious day in November and I had a Matrix Reloaded moment: I actually forced myself to believe this felt as good as the original. Man was I such a fanboy back then . I was so scared of finding that same feeling 2 years ago, but damn did I breathe a sigh of relief when it just felt right. That was, of course, until I realized the new blood in the cinematics writing team couldn't write for crap and of course, "Cortana". It's as if Bungie has to fulfill a quota for one crap level .
But damn, playing "The Storm" with four players co-op and all the right skulls is better than anything else theoriginal Halo:CE campaign could offer, let alone Halo 2.
Yes, I think Halo 2's campaign sucks. I think the Arbiter and the Covenant story was a misstep. Then again Bungie shouldn't have retread and cut out the Covenant story in Halo 3 because the fans initially hated it. Next time Bungie, don't listening to whining fans, coz you might **** up your schedule :?

Also, why does one game make or break your faith in a developer? It took Epic three games (Gears, UT3, Gears 2)for PC owners to finally think Epic have lost the plot. It's taken Rare several to make people lose hope in their golden touch (I think otherwise, but the sentiments of others remain), and no one has blinked an eye since id Software faltered with Doom 3. Bungie had a large reputation before even the original Halo, and because of one game released in one month of the one year, they've completely lost the touch?
Not only that, Halo 3 is not a bad game by any measure. It's arguable that they could not create the greatest FPS campaign ever made, but it's better than most other offerings at the very least. Furthermore, it's been 2 years and Halo 3is stillthe gold standard in a console online multiplayer service. If Bungie sucks right now, and they can pull **** like that off, I wanna see what they do when they're on form :|
Really though, Halo: ODST, despite being another freakin' Halo game, looks pretty sweet. In fact, it looks to have the best campaign since the original Halo: CE, and that's saying quite a bit since it's been 8 years since the original came out.
Despite the fact that this article is from 2007 (that explains why I couldn't find it on Kotaku's front page) I agree on the Bungie being better than Epic point.
Epic would do well to take some lessons from Bungie in creating proper netcode.
Gears of War 2 (despite being significantly better than it was originally, after patches) is about two steps from being totally broken in my eyes and this is coming from someone who plays it regularly and generally enjoys it. The host advantage makes you ridiculously overpowerd in comparison to everyone else in the game, so much so that you can literally feel while playing. It's annoying to see myself disintegrate before the host's overpowered shotgun despite being 15 feet away or being chainsawed despite shooting that same person in the face as they ran up to me, revving their Lancer. I never have such horrible lag problems in any other games and the host is never so incredibly overpowered as they are in Gears of War games.
