People seem to be hyped about it, telling it's the future tech. But what's so amazing about it? Virtual Boy was practically the same, and it failed. Why would this succeed?

It's like this but the screen is actually on your eye-balls.

It's a virtual reality headset that tracks you head movement and also provides proper 3D with two different screens. It also has a 110 degree field of view meaning you're not wearing a headset looking at a screen but it feels like you're actually IN the game.
It's also better than previous VR headsets of the past because now we have accelerometers good enough to not notice huge lag when moving your head and we also have tiny displays with great resolutions, though the Rift only has a low res version so far

No, it's obviously just VIrtual Boy 2 dude.
It wasn't made by Microsoft. If it were you would have everyone calling it virtual boy 2.0.People seem to be hyped about it, telling it's the future tech. But what's so amazing about it? Virtual Boy was practically the same, and it failed. Why would this succeed?

Oh I mean yeaaaaahhhh... Suuuuure. Whatever makes the TC feel better :P
Yeah, gimmicky trash that everyone will forget about in a year. Then a new one will come out and everyone will cream over that until it fails. senses_fail_06this, Everyone wants a new way to play games but in the end a controller is simple, flexible, and allows you everything you need to play games.

the Oculus Rift isn't a controller
[QUOTE="Flubbbs"]And the same might happen to Oculus Rift.the Virtual Boy was the biggest piece of shit ever conceived and should never be spoken off again..

i wouldnt be suprised if it went either way.. its not my taste, i dont need a headset to get immersed in a game

Yes, because Virtua Boy was tested and hyped? Â Oh, that wasn't the case? Â You mean the Virtua Boy was a glorified Gameboy with 3d akin to a popup book? Â I've played both a Virtua Boy and Oculus Rift and they are nothing alike. Â Do you realize the N64 hadn't even shipped when Virtua Boy was released? Mario64 hadn't come out yet. Â Quake 1 hadn't come out yet. Games were still being made on the Build engine.... 3D rendering was in its infancy.
From my experience with the device, it's completely useless.

What did you use with it and how long did you use it for?Â
Nah, I'd say stuff like the Atari Jaguar CD, Nokia N-Gage, Sega Nomad, and Gizmondo beat it in the terrible console department, and that's not even getting into all the Chinese knockoff systems.the Virtual Boy was the biggest piece of shit ever conceived and should never be spoken off again..

Again, this is like saying "why do we need a PS4? We already had videogame systems back in the 70s".Â

The Rift seems to be getting a lot of nose turning too from gamers which I can't understand for the life of me. We as gamers play games to get lost in other worlds, and the Rift essentially tries to do that but I've seen some people just be like "lol stupid gimmick" and others wanting it to fail.
Then again there are still plenty who see its greatness. I'd have one already if the wait wasn't so damn long

the Oculus Rift isn't a controller
it adds another level of interaction with monitorying head movements, so its not just a virtual reality either. It also adds additional hardware they you have to hold, even if its by strapping it to your head its not the same as sitting around with a controller.Yeah, gimmicky trash that everyone will forget about in a year. Lol, pure comedy. I'm bookmarking these Oculus Rift threads and coming back to them so we can reflect on how stupid some of you were.

Yeah, and by that same line of reasoning the Atari gave us everything we need to play games.

Exactly. The technology wasn't ready. Now the technology has caught up to the vision.

another dumb gimmick. because there aren't enough of those right now :roll:mems_1224
Please define 'gimmick' and explain why you think the Rift is one.

Wow, herms hyping this better than the invention of flight.
They must have run out of indie games or MMOs to play (lol)
actually it's just this one user
Basically, the smartphone and tablet boom have brought about a great deal of R&D in high-resolution compact LCDs and inexpensive, low-latency accelerometers. Someone was smart enough to notice that those solved the problems with existing VR solutions.lowe0Yeah, I've been waiting my whole life for this technology to become affordable. About 20 years ago, at a technology convention, I tried out a VR headset with the game Doom. It was full color, had head tracking, and it was very small and lightweight. The only problem was the price...

What did you use with it and how long did you use it for?Â
just some roller coaster tech demo and team fortress 2 for about 10 to 20 minutes. I cannot think of a use for the device that would enhance gameplay is all. Perhaps there are better showcases for the device though...

Yeah, that's true, but I'd say there are far more gamers excited for it than there are naysayers. And those are mostly people who haven't tried it. Almost everybody who tries it is blown away and extremely excited for it.
I think a lot of people feel threatened by a piece of technology like this. Some are afraid of change and they lack the vision to imagine how it can actually make things better and that it doesn't really threaten what they already love. Then there are a certain segment of gamers that are attacking it simply because they are console fanboys and the Rift is coming for PC.

I know you are kind of slow, but surely even you can understand the comparison. It's the same kind of thinking. I'm obviously not saying that the Oculus Rift is as important as the invention of flight.
