Easily. Don't think Scalebound or Divinity Original Sin 2 got any chance of competing against Persona V on any level. Its my opinion tho.
What say you? :)

In quality, sales nah.
Horizon Zero Dawn will shit fire on themthough financially and likely quality wise.
I've heard enough Persona gushing for a lifetime, and when P5 releases the gushing will increase tenfold. Might even have to take a break from SW...
Ugh.
Thank you, Chaz.

If it makes you feel any better, if something fails to live up to my expectations, I get viciously critical with it- and I have very high expectations of P5, lol.

I want none of your manic depressive impulses.

Sure you do :-3
I love Persona to death, but If you're not into Anime weeabo dating sim games then there's nothing for you in the series. Too different kind of games to even compare.
Highly reductionist view of the games that ignores the finer nuance, thematic, musical, and mechanical, that these games exhibit.

Quality turn based combat? Check
Tons of playtime? Check
Interesting monster design and level design? Check
Something isn't "just anime" because it is done in anime form.
Doubt it,
Persona 4 was one of the worst games I have played. That piece of trash represents everything wrong with contemporary RPGs and anime cliches.
Persona 5 looks better to be fair. But, chances are, it will be the same derivative piece and preachy piece of trash that Persona 4 was. Potentially surpassing Persona 4 means little when Persona 4 set a really low bar.

I have the game bro, I know. ;D
I am significantly more hyped for Divinity: OS2, with the reasons being,
Do I sound like a fanboy? Hell yes I do. But at the same time, I actually didnt like Larian until I played Dragon Commander. I could never get far in Divinity 2 before losing all my interest, I found that game really dull. And that newfound fanboyism just shows how much I loved D:OS.
Persona 5 is probably going to be great in its own light, but that's hardly the JRPG that will be compared with Scalebound, rather I'm sure Nier Automata will be more fitting not only because both will be exclusive Platinum Games titles for their respective systems, and even then I still think PS4 has an edge. The design of Scalebound looks like very other JRPG these days who all get their landscapes from the same person be it Xenoblade Chronicles X, Final Fantasy XV, or now Scalebound, it's all starting to look alike.
@putaspongeon: Quality turn based combat? You're for real? You repeat the same shit through the entire game. Interesting monster designs? You know how many palette swaps there are? I can literally count the original monsters on one hand.
Don't even get me started on the dungeons.
Golden Sun shits on Persona which has undeserved praise on System Wars thanks to one obsessive mod. It's actually not even a contest. Golden Sun beats Persona 4 in everything that makes a great JRPG except characters. Beats it in music, level design, art, combat, exploration, world, lore. Everything.

Come on man that's Kamiya's take of jrpg games more like Drakengard. Its bound to be interesting, fun and better. That's Kamiya!!! lol

That bit surprised me too.
Persona 4 had terrible monster designs. And the copy paste pallette swapped not only made the product look extremely lazy. Sorry, but the excuse they throwed in does not justify lazy design. Especially coming off SMT Nocturne which had around 180 demons, all with 3d models.
The level design was just as bad, with randomly generated levels, that had none of the charm and personality of those in say Diablo 2. Diablo 2 did random levels so much better, with local themes, landmarks, props, and architectural variety (prisons, cramped corridors, open spaces), whereas in Persona 4 you do nothing but traverse the same corridors with different textures on the wall and floor.
Its one of the reasons the dungeon crawling in P4 was such a dreadful experience.
Also whose idea was it to make weapons and armor require you to grind items dropped by enemies? Why are my new recruits roughly 10 levels above me? What is it with the HP bloat on some bosses?
@charizard1605: doesn't change the fact that the whole personal link dating Anime weeabo thing will be a big turn off for a lot of people. Playing dating sims, lets called it what it is and don't lie to ourselves, is hard to stomach for a lot of people, me included.
@Maroxad: This.
I really don't get all the praise it generates. It has some very obvious and undeniable glaring flaws. It's a fun game with charming characters and a somewhat compelling story that gets dragged on for too long but people that make it out to be some kind of flawless masterpiece need to sit down.

Same here, I could stomach the rather awful dungeon crawling, but I could NOT stomach the social linking time. I remember near the end of the game, where you would lose any remaining days for SLinking as soon as you beat the "final" dungeon. I just rushed it, because at htat ponit I just wanted to be done with the game.
Characterization is generally poor, which is not surprising for a game which spreads itself so thin. Trying to develop around 20 characters doesnt bode well for obvious reasons. Even worse when a good ammount of the social links add very little to the overall narrative. Not to mention the incredibly predictable villain, who I and pretty much anyone else I knew could predict within the first 10 hours of the game. Chie, whose characterization is so widely praised, is nothing more than a copy of a Persona 2 character.
Though, I see some argue its not a dating sim (yeah right... it has ALL the dating sim tropes I can think of).
Oh, some prefer calling that game a life simulator instead... but it gets even worse in that case, since it totally gets wrecked there by its competition. If I want to play something like that, I wouldnt play a poor man's Princess Maker 2, I would play the real deal,
Not the lousy wannabe.
Persona V is not big outside of Japan I don't know how fanboys don't know this a lot of gamers don't even know what Persona is
Perona 5 isn't releasing though. Atleast not this year
QFT
rip chaz
It's not just a daring sim but it is partially one. You spend hours upon hours building relationships with girls and the dates are lame as hell too.
Just like the social linking.
The whole slice of life section has this problem. There is simply put very little player agency in it, and it is not well written enough to justify the lack of interactivity. In Princess Maker 2 for instance, the game had over 70 different endings, based on y our actions. With several twists to them too. Likewise, the path you take can vary greatly from playthrough to playthrough. Your goals in one run might be radically different from your goals in another run. Whereas in Persona 4, you can easily achieve everything in your first run and your end goal is always the same in each run. In Princess Maker 2, raising your daughter to become a crime lord is radically different from raising your daughter to become well a prime minister. The difference is so vast, its not just picking a dialogue option or doing the same thing but with a different character, but raising a different skillset entirely and engaging in different activities as well.
The social slice of life in P4 simply pales compared to what others did over 20 years before Persona 4 was a thing. Persona 4 just felt so primitive before it even came out.
@Maroxad: Have you ever even played a dating sim before? It is VERY different from Persona. Besides the dungeon crawling and the fact that it's an rpg, dating sims are only about choosing the right things to say to unlock certain endings. Even in Persona 4's case, you have to do more than just talk. Give Atlus more credit, Persona only has a tiny dating sim aspect at best and that serves for strengthening characters and their chances of helping you in battles. It's not like playing Amnesia or Stein's Gate, the dating sim aspect is actually very optional and puny in comparison.
I have high hopes for Divinity Original Sin 2, so no I don't believe P5 will be better than this game.

Dating sims gneerally have you do the following,
Persona does 6 out of the 7 things. The dating sim is extremely apt, and has been frequently thrown around for a reason.
Persona 5 looks like crap, to be honest I mostly dont like japanese games anyway, because they often look too ridiculous to me.
Its pretty clear most of the users ripping Persona V never played any persona games or got any idea about its gameplay. Just ripping it apart on basis of it being a jrpg and teenage characters.
Its pretty clear that most users defending Persona games are people who havent played many competing games. Just praising it because they havent seen how far behind the game trails behind its competition.
See? I can make redicilous assertions too. Doesnt make my (or your) claim true.
@Juub1990: You mean the small 3 to 5 minute segements are considered big to you? On casual setting, you can avoid it altogether and just zip through the game. If that's considered a big chunk then we must have a different definition of the term. The dating part doesn't even effect the story. How can it be considered important?
@Maroxad: It's thrown around to help level up characters and the segments are tiny in the first place. I honestly don't see how they could bother anyone at all. The game has a skip button, y'know.
@killered3: 3-5x8(girls)x10(10 max social link)=4 to 6 hours 1/2. Pretty big chunk to me.
Also pretty sure you need to date many of them to advance your social links so you can get different perks. The fact that it is optional is irrelevant. It is part of the game and needs to be addressed.

In Persona 4, you dont actually need to get romantic with them.
From what I hear, you needed to in P3 however. One of the many reasons I am not touching that game with a 10 foot pole. Though, I believe the PSP game fixed that issue.
And indeed, them being otpional is irrelevent. The fact that they are in and poorly implemented is my concern. Fast travelling was in Oblivion too, and was entirely optional. But it was still a legimate point of criticism for that game. Same goes for the settlements in Fallout 4.
