@DressYouUp:
It pushed the boundaries in gameplay. No game before had such a physics model for water.
Remember what PC it took to match the 360 in 2005?
Thats what I call the envy of PC gamers like myself
Sadly console makers decided to double milk the fanbase
The consoles have been out for sometime now and were better than the PC hardware at their time of launch.
This has been a weak jump imo. The leap from ps1/n64 to xbox/ps2/gamecube to xbox360/ps3/wii were better imo.
If you using the pc in the comparison, and how the consoles fared against it at the beginning of their cycles, then you're correct. However, talking from console to console (in which they're actually compared to) the ps4/xb1 did very well. Do remember the ps4/xb1 launch, 1st and 2nd years on the market when they were sharing multiplats with the previous gen consoles. Every last game definitely showed their respected prowness on the current gen consoles vs the previous consoles, and in some instances, the differences was generational (ala BF4). Like someone here already stated: sony's "fall from grace" with the ps3 just didn't scare sony alone, so nobody was touching the "599 US dollars" price tag, and so compromises had to be made.
I don't believe that the console's power is to blame moreso than the state that games are being released in.
Consoles shouldn't need to go up against PC from the start of this gen. Consoles were meant to do there own thing, not trying to be somebody else like a PC wannabes. In short, these current-gens going up against PC is just suicidal.
Credit goes to Wii U for doing something new and not trying to be like PS4/Xbox One.
RIP the old days of console gaming.
Well for one, they're whole new systems rather than just a new component. This is what PChildren need to understand.
@ronvalencia: I never have a clue what your saying?
Microsoft executed the same Xbox 360 game plan for Xbox One with a similar area size GPU and newer tech.
1st gen Xbox 360's GPU has about 100 watts.
Radeon X1950 XTX has 125 watts TDP while NVIDIA created a new TDP level for PC GPUs i.e. 185 watts for 8800 GTX.
PC GPUs has passed 185 watts limits with 250 to 300 watts limits.
For PS4, Sony predicted MS's game plan and made a better Xbox.
No but the output rate for games is tragic.
And it's only going to get worse from here on out. Games that take the better part of a decade to release while we have new iterations of consoles every three years now? Makes no damn sense.
Plus the patches and dlc, curse you modern gaming :P
Honestly with the Ps4 Neo, I think that's the last non Nintendo console I ever buy. Why get excited for a Ps5 if it's going to be as bad or worse than this? PC + Nintendo for me after this gen for sure.
I've been calling them WealSauce all gen. :P
WealSauce? Oh man.. I've been calling them WeakSauce, why didn't anyone tell me!?!
Whelp, now ya know, WealSauce is just the way us cool people say it.....
Wise guy. :P

And just plug-in play as well.
Nope, can't do that.
Why not? There has never been a console generation with has taken such a meek technological step.
Even the Xbox 360 outclassed PC at the time of its release.
hahaha what?
Go back to the corner and think about what you just said, silly bou

Well, some will debate but Kameo in 2005 was king until Gears stole the crown in 2006.
Then Crysis happened. so, just sayin. :P

Did I lie? What looked better than Halo 4 or Gears of War 3 on PC in 2005? Bye.

That's quite hilarious, Intel Sandy bridge released on 2011 and so did 7970(the upper class model of ps4's gimped 7870)
But nice try
Yeah, they've been pretty tragic. But that's Sony's and MS's problem. I'm not shelling out again so soon because they've decided their hardware isn't strong, that's dumb. Three years in and these consoles have barely proven their worth and now these guys want to release new hardware? **** that.
This gen is a case of 'Fool me once, shame on you', with these console.

Well, as much as I've complained about the Neo, I'll probably end up getting one by the end of the year. *shock* Only because I was wanting a second PS4, so why not get the upgraded version? I just hope like hell it comes with a standard larger HDD. 500gb just isn't enough these days. If I have to, I'll get a 2TB SSD for it, but it will cost an arm and a leg I'm afraid. :(
look like playable movies..cant say anything bad about anything graphically. HOWEVER this gen has been mostly remakes and backwards compatibility mess...I have not and will not buy into xbone/ps4 wiiu..might not ever game again even.

It didn't even perform better than PS4 due to lack of optimization and bad drivers.
Come on kid, try learning hardware before you post.
To prove how impossible some people are, everyone thought Sony were idiots for losing so much money on the PS3, taking a risk on a new disc standard that's now gone on over a decade with no signs of slowing, next to always-online which is still a joke due to obsolete bandwidth infrastructure. The Cell was a half-baked realization of the original hardware plans, but it still put out the most impressive looking and sounding console games last gen. Killzone 2 in 7.1 LPCM with 32 players was insanely chaotic fun.
As far as I know, the PS3 is still the only Blu-Ray player from 2006 that gets software updates and it played back high bitrate video better than my old PC with a Q6700 in it.
In short, the console has had the longest legs of anything before or after it. Fast forward to now with the PS4 being affordable and people think it's a joke on the other end of the spectrum, with Sony able to profit from it shortly after launch.
Will they find a happier medium down the road? Only time will tell. Technology is too fast-paced for anything to retain its value for very long. I bought my gaming PC a year before my PS3 Slim at about 3x the cost, and have put nearly as much into upgrades since just trying to stay ahead of the curve. Pound for pound, you could say I've gotten much more money's worth out of my PS3 for gaming. I like the added benefits of PC as far as customizations, and having the option to beef up graphics, but it's bound to get expensive if you keep chasing those best settings.
During PS3 era, I have Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 at 3.2 Ghz with AMD Radeon HD 3870 GDDR4 and it played Blu-ray videos just fine i.e. played blue-ray videos to the expected standards. http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-37.shtml
To the drive the GPU, running non-DX12 APIs needs a very fast single thread CPU performance. Q6700 (at 2.6Ghz) is not optimal for DX9/10/11 limitations.
My next PC CPU was Intel "Sandybridge" Core I7-2600.
The following desktop GPUs after 3870 was 4870 then 6950.
All my PC purchases are made against my income tax, which mostly nullified the my out of pocket PC expense.
1st gen chip size for PS3
GPU: 258 mm^2 (including memory controllers).
CELL: 235.94 mm^2 (including NB and memory controllers).
Total: 493 mm^2
PS3's GPU was substantially inferior to Xbox 360's Xenos GPU's 180 mm^2 i.e. complex shaders has to run on CELL's SPUs while Xenos handles complex shaders just fine.
1st gen PS4 chip size
GPU: 212 mm^2
CPU: 24 mm^2
Total: 348 mm^2 (including NB/SB and memory controllers).
At the same process node, ATI/AMD's transistor packing ability is far superior to IBM. Unlike NVIDIA Geforce 7/RSX, ATI X1x00 series GPUs are Fold At Home GpGPU capable via ATI's low level Close-to-Metal(CTM) APIs i.e. full speed 32bit FP with GpGPU capability. With Fold at Home GpGPU, X1900 flexed it's non-graphics compute power by beating CELL by 2X . The origins for PS4's low level API programming model already existed in ATI's DX9c/CTM GPUs. X1900 and Xenos are SIMD based GPUs just like current AMD GCNs. Radeon HD from 2900 to pre-GCN are VLIW based GPUs. Under AMD, it removed VLIW GPUs and unified console and PC GPUs under a single GCN architecture.
With PS3's 493 mm^2 chip budget, early PS4 like model could been built from 4 PPE 3.2 Ghz (8 threads, 24 mm^2 each PPE), X1900 (352 mm^2, delivers 2X compute power over CELL) and 256bit GDDR3 unified memory architecture. X1900 has 16 ROPS which is 2X over Xbox 360's 8 ROPS.

There isn't really any console optimization any more, a console is basically just a closed PC with a custom OS. At console launch a PC with a Intel Sandy Bridge CPU and a 7970 would have performed much better than the consoles.
Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag was a launch title on Ps4, it ran at 30fps and was missing a couple graphical features that were on PC (not much though). On PC it ran at 55-60fps with a 7970. A GTX 770 came out a few months before the Ps4 would play this game above 60fps.

Ok list a few games that performed better on ps4 than on say 2600k i7 + 580gtx(this is what I had back then) or 7970amd
I'm rather familiar with hardware how about you?
@clyde46: Only if you want the graphics upgrade otherwise it's not required. I spent that last gen when my PS3 fat got the Ylod on the 4th year and later had to purchase a PS3 slim(which still works today). I think going with the lower wattage this gen has made the consoles far more reliable. So I don't mind an optional graphical boost as long as they fully support the original PS4.
I am ok with my ps4 but i dont like upgrade and VR shit for sony too bad ps4 dont have CELL CPU
That's 5 SPE at 3.2Ghz vs 6 Jaguar cores at 1.6Ghz (98 points) or 6 Jaguar cores at 1.75 Ghz (113 points). 7th Jaguar CPU core has been unlocked for both XBO and PS4.
PS3's estimated score with 6 SPE at 3.2Ghz is 126 points.
PS4's estimated score with 7 CPU cores at 1.6 Ghz is 114points.
PS4 NEO's estimated score with 7 CPU cores at 2.1Ghz is 158 points.
7 Jaguar CPU cores at 2.4 Ghz estimated score is 180 points
7 Jaguar CPU cores at 3.2 Ghz estimated score is 240 points
Both PS4 and PS4 NEO doesn't need CELL.
Both NVIDIA and AMD smashes IBM's math processor solutions.
To all IBM CELL fanboys, come at me. It's time to end this CELL superiority bullshit.
AMD Jaguar overclocking to 2.5 Ghz.
http://valid.canardpc.com/xfs78d
AMD Jaguar at 3.1 Ghz overclock.
Blame Sony for setting PS4's TDP less than desktop PC's.
.
Even the upgraded ps4 neo specs aren't much improvement. It'll still struggle to do 1080p, yet they are advertising this as a 4k machine.
Are you kidding? 36 CUs running at over 900 mhz will put it at nearly 4 tflops. That's PLENTY enough for 1080p! I have concerns about the CPU and memory bandwidth potentially bottlenecking things but the GPU as is rumored is pretty damned good. I still consider the CPU to be too weak for PS4 so for PS4.5 it might be an incredibly too weak match for the GPU.
I think the problem is PC hardware has been getting more and more power hungry and people forget that you have limited space in a console to get adequate air flow.
Add in that it is too expensive for console makers to design their own silicon and make custom chips really the console makers just get what they are given spec wise.
Look what has happened to Intel over the years, they have had to scale back their workforce a few times because of how expensive it is to get big enough gains and that's with their chips being twice the price of AMD (obviously different processes). I think we are not gonna get the massive gains with PC anymore either, so get used to it.
Nope, can't do that.

What the fuq are you blabbering about? Halo 4 and Gears 3 did not exist in 2005 and by the time they did, Crysis had pissed all over anything that would ever be available on Xbox 360.
@DressYouUp: 1tb upgrade falls under same logic. Your reach is strong. If you knew anything about the world around you would know technology somply movin fater than ever.
Not at all!!! Most of the people that have the current gen systems, are quite happy with 'em!!! Sales say hello :)
Now, you can enjoy the same softs, with or without upgrading, choice is yours. In most cases only few will upgrade, and even then they can afford the whole system for less than the price of a GC!!!

Yeah its people like OP & most people in this thread are too stupid too get that 90% of people who buy console just want too play games/have fun.
@uninspiredcup said: The public don't care about specs, they just want a good experience with no bullshit.
Good hardware helps to deliver good experience.
Nope. I don't think their hardware is "tragic". The games look good. Consoles have always been much weaker than PC, so if you compare them to that you're stupid. This is the way it should be. Consoles should not cost 600 bucks. 400 bucks is too much as well, imo. The PS4 and Xbone's library of games is what's tragic.
