Can we come to an agreement that PS3 is 25 - 50% more powerful?

On another topic someone chaffed at the idea that the PS3 was 3 times more powerful than the XBOX 360......rightfully so.

The PS3 is certainly not 3 times more powerful. For honesty's sake, I'd even like to volunteer that the PS3 isn't twice as powerful. But seeing how the XBOX 360 is having a hard time rendering its own 2010 exclusives in high definition whereas the PS3 isn't, I think its fair to say the PS3 is at least 25% more powerful, and possibly as high as 50% more.

Can we agree to that?

50%? According to my calculations, indeed because i'm an expert like you. I have concluded that this thread is 100% useless!

Based on exclusives, I would says its only a tiny bit more powerful than the 360.

No. Because that isn't true. :? The two machines are more or less the same, give or take. I can't believe this is still even a debate after all these years...

EDIT: also, why is it that more or less every thread asking 'can we all agree...' ALWAYS goes on to propose a totally unagreeable premise? :P

No, because it's a blatant lie. Both of MS's and Sony's machines are almost completely identical in terms of power, each separate one having a compensating advantage and disadvantage over the other.

Where's the fair and honest though? Where are the PS3 games which are 50% better looking than their 360 counterparts? The only evidence you have to back this up is that the 360 is 'having a hard time' rendering in HD (i'm guessing you're referring to Alan Wake...) yet Red Dead Redemption is sub-HD on the PS3 and full HD on the 360. Plenty of PS3 games have been sub-HD, including exclusives. Is the 360 therefore more powerful? Heck no. I'm not saying the 360 is better here by any means, it's not. But neither is the PS3. I think a lot of people need to get over the fact that the PS3 isn't the super computer it was promised to be and that the two will consistently produce more or less the same results.

I understand scale, theseekar,

But keep in mind, INFAMOUS's graphics didn't suck...they were good with really good lighting effects in fact. Not only that, but the game was "open world", and the game was native 720p.

Alan wake was sub HD.

If there is a difference between the two machines I would argue it to be in the 10-15% range. It can be very hard to divide different elements of a games graphical level. How much money was spent on it? How talented are the developers? What was the focus and for how long? What about the development cycle itself? What would happen on an equivalent budget on another platform. We can all point left and right but in the end without a more detailed answer to these questions.

..

The 360 does have titles that look less impressive then what is available on the PS3. However a very common mistake is to just compare exclusive to exclusive without a care for graphical fidelity of multiplatform titles. RDR is an incredible technical achievement, RE5 looks amazing, games like Alan Wake and Gears 2 are also lookers. In the end, Uncharted 2 undoubtedly stands head and shoulders above its console graphical competition but I (and maybe this is just me) find it hard to really argue that there is much more beyond that which really beats down the 360...

Also, FF13 is better on the PS3 as well as a handful of other 2010 multiplatform games....this creates inconsistency. What that means is, is multiplatform games are a poor way of judging a systems "power".

Which one is technically more powerful is irrelevant. It all comes down to which system actually has the better looking games.

It's like those Xbox fanboys the previous generation, who boasted having the most powerful system, while it took them years to come up with a game as good-looking as the Gamecube exclusive Star Fox Adventures (which was released in 2002!), and some Gamecube multiplats even had way shorter loading times. It all comes down to how much power the devs are actually able to cram out of the machine.

Alan Wake doesn't even compare to UC2 or GOW3.

-100x bigger scale and open areas

- real forests and weather effecs

- dynamic volumetric lighting

Sorry, Alan Wake graphics are the future, tiny static spaces of GOW3 and U2 are jomeiocre last gen stuff for me

PS3 hardware is totallyh weak and not even close to 360 next gen GPU, RAM and design

That is why the difference in RDR is so vast

Holy bloody ****, they somehow managed to get actual forests and weather INTO the game? Alan Wake might have a chance at beating Real Life, after all.

Oh and the PS3 and 360 seem to be equally as powerful, to me.

I love threads that start "can we agree (insert oppinionated statement)". because they are destined to fail. TC I think that yes PS3 has some hardware advantages over 360 that Sony developers have made proper use of, but more powerful? How do you determine power? (graphics cards, cpu, ram, ram speed etc). If ps3 has an advantage it is probably very very small.

Anything could be made to run better on a particular system if its made to run that way, Ninja-Hippo.

Many early multiplatform engines and games were made to run best on XBOX 360 because of lack of know how regarding the PS3.

TC, 2005 called and they want you back.

its 2010 and PS3 multiplats STILL look inferior compaired to the purported '' Weaker '' system?

if we are still searching for this 50% more power at this late date then this gen has been an Epic fail for PS3.

nothing to see here.

please move on.

how is 50MHz faster 25% better? how on earth can the color pallette be worse than 360 if its more powerful? thats what you get for buying parts that arent as good of quality as microsoft, sony!!!. the reliability of the 360 is only caused by human error and the like because i have a 2008 model 360 and never turned it in once to M$ that still works 100%

More or less I don't think the 360 could handle Uncharted 2 in 720p but I think the PS3 could handle Alan Wake in 720p

Diviniuz

PS3 could never run Alan Wake, not a single exclusive has as huge spaces, next gen lighting and real forests/foliage

Would probably run it in 480p, if at all and with far worst effects and of coursethe big areas would all be cut

They are roughly equal, only cows think its vastly superior. The people who made the things said they were equal, so it comes down to developer talent, and i dont think lemmings would argue that sony has the better devs. And THAT is where the great looking games come from, lets give the devs the credit, not Sony or the PS3.

If there is any difference at all, I'd judge it to be no more than 4-7% in raw power.

[QUOTE="theseekar"]

[QUOTE="sam_nintendo"] I'm curious, do you actually know what dynamic volumetric lighting is? And have you played U2?sam_nintendo

Yes to both

I actually know exactly how the effect is done too

Well, I don't know what it it. Mind giving an explanation for the laypeople?

It is the sumulation of dust particles in atmospherethat light reflects on, and give this hazy effect in the environment between the light actual end target

The effect is very simpel to do, just add layers(planes) of transparent light volume representation, and the hard part is to make the shadows right, that is interaction with environment objects that create a shadow in the volume, usually by rendering the surrounding from light source and seeing which objects should be painted over the transparency planes to create the shadow effect

It is all an illusion, but very impressive one when done the real way (with shadows checkthat is)
