I think people need to really analyze what tier a studio fits in.
Top tier or S- tier to me are studios that consistently find commercial and critical success in different IP's or genres. These are the very best in the industry. With games that consistently hit 9+ on metacritic never below an 8 and have good to great sales that go with it. In my mind ND and SSM are realistically the only two that would be in that category for Sony however that's pretty amazing because to me that's a very small category and honestly Microsoft has nobody in this tier. Top tier studios would be the following.
S-tier
Rockstar Games
CD Project Red
Sony Santa Monica
Naughty Dog
Nintendo
Blizzard
The second is is A tier. These are devs that score consistently in the mid 8 to 9s but never below an 8 with decent sales. And also find a way to do it in different genres or with multiple Ip's . Just outside of the elite. They would be the following.
A- tier
Capcom
From Software
Crystal Dynamics
Rocksteady
The Third is right below that. I think most people would call this B- tier but these are still great devs. These studios are ones that usually average 8 on MC with some 9s and have solid to good sales. They may also be one trick ponies meaning they have only done one very specific genre well which keeps them from being in the S or A tiers. They may have a few missteps along the way but never below a 7 and they are rare. Microsoft's best studios belong in this category and Sony has some of their best studios here as well. I would put the following studios on this list.
B-tier
Insomniac
343 studios
The Coalition
Gurilla Games
Sucker Punch
Turn 10
Ninja Theory
Obsidian
Media Molecule
Playground Games
Then next would be C tier. These are devs that may have a good mix of hits and misses. The best games they make score 8+ on MC with decent sales but they have quite a few 7s and some below. The following are
C-tier
Sony San Diego
Ubisoft Montreal
Polyphony Digital
Sony Japan
Bioware
Dice
Rare
The next would be D-tier. These are studios that consistently that really struggle to have any titles in the 8+ range or are just unproven and haven't released enough for us to have an idea of what their capable of.
D-tier
Sony Bend
Undead labs
Compulsion games
So honestly anything B-tier or up in my book is worth getting excited about. My list is mostly compromised of their work over the last 10 years as studios can change tiers over time.
